Volume 9 of the new Urtext edition of Schubert’s lieder contains lieder composed during the spring and summer of 1816, some of which follow upon series started in 1815. They are available in separate books for high, medium and low voice. The volume was completed by the eminent Schubert scholar Walter Dürr who passed away at the beginning of 2018.It was in 1816 that Schubert completed his settings of Ossian's songs and added lieder on texts by Johann Georg Jacobi, Johann Peter Uz and Matthias Claudius. Also included are the lieder from the Grob family songbook. In summer 1816 Schubert produced his first settings of poems by Christian Friedrich Daniel Schubart (“Grablied auf einen Soldaten†and “An mein Klavierâ€), the author of the words to one of his most famous songs “Die Forelleâ€/ “The Trout†(see Volume 2).

For many, the title will awaken memories of the demonstrations against the clearance of the Flörsheim Forest to allow for a new runway at the Frankfurt Airport. Both the poem, which extends beyond this local incident to remind us of the seriousness of our global situation, and the music join together to form an expressive, universally valid call for the conservation of our core values, our future together: “Die Erde jedoch wird sich wehren. Sie wird uns, am Ende, nichts mehr geben als den Staub, in dem wir aufgehn.†(The earth, however, will resist. She will, in the end, not give us any more than dust, into which we will submerge.) It is up to us, to prevent the situation from advancing so far: “Wir, die wir zu ihren Schülern wurden, sollten die Lehre der Bäume verbreiten.†(We, the students, should spread the teachings of the trees.â€

First known to the music world as a guitar recitalist, David Leisner turned to composing his own guitar repertoire, and soon expanded his work to create a rich catalog in the grand tradition of art songs for voice with guitar. Much beloved by singers for his poignant lyricism and powerful cultivation of meaningful texts, Leisner has also composed a wealth of art songs for voice with piano. The present collection is a selection of six songs from existing cycles for medium voice, on texts by Emily Dickinson, William Butler Yeats, Emily Bronte, and Elizabeth Bishop.
