The source of the present edition of the Oboe Concerto in A minor by Antonio Vivaldi is the Collected Works of Vivaldi, edited by Malipiero, published by Ricordi 1955. The title of the original score is Concerto in La minore per oboe, archi e cembalo the original setting: Oboe, Violini I-II, Viole, Violoncelli, Contrabassi and Cembalo. The arrangement for oboe and piano is kept in accurate conformity with the musical text of score, the continuo part - however - has been more freely adapted (of course within the possibilities of baroque style). The piano part contains the entire orchestral material in the Tutti-s, thus the soloist is not obliged to play all the Tutti parts. However, in Movement I and III the first and last Tutti may never be omitted by the performer.

White Light was commissioned by Fumiko Teramoto, oboist with the Musashino Grand Concert Band from Tokyo, Japan. The request was for a moderately slow piece, of intermediate difficulty, which included White in the title, as this is her lucky colour. Composer Philip Sparke decided to use this suggestion to write a piece that was bright and light in terms of harmony and colour, with much use of simple major and minor chords and an emphasis on pure and transparent timbres. He was also keen to capture the essence and history of the oboe as a solo instrument - the piece is pastoral in character and often almost baroque in style. Also available for oboe and concert band (AMP317-010/140).

This is an updated edition of Francis Poulenc 's 1962 work Sonata For Oboe And Piano , edited by Millan Sachania . Featuring the full score and a separate Oboe part, this exclusive edition also includes a download card, giving you instant online access to demonstration and accompaniment tracks. Originally completed in 1962, Poulenc 's Sonata For Oboe And Piano had been brewing in his mind for at least five years. The last of Poulenc 's trio of sonatas for woodwind instruments, he tragically passed away before it could be definitively engraved, leaving behind a work with a number of ambiguous notational marks that resulted in an incomplete first edition, publishedposthumously. A number of revisions have taken place, but this, expertly edited by Millan Sachania , aims to provide a playable, legible, precise and authoritative score that reflect closest Poulenc 's intentions. This new edition revises many minor details, including Piano chords, tied notes, the correction of various bars throughout as well as his crescendos during the third movement. At all points, Sachania has aimed to reproduce an authoritative and accurate score that is at once playable and a reflection of what Poulenc himself may have intended. This is a most exciting prospect considering the reputation that this work has garnered as a piece of profound poignancy. Dedicated to Sergey Prokofiev, it has been said that the mournful final movement, Deploration , is something of an obituary. What makes this edition of Sonata For Clarinet And Piano really special is the unique download card that provides exclusive online access to demonstration and accompaniment audio tracks. Professionally-recorded by renowned oboist Christopher Cowie and pianist Huw Watkins, the demonstration track allows you to hear exactly how the piece as a whole should sound, before the independent Piano-only track lets you take the place of the Oboe in your very own performance. This is a unique opportunity for oboists to learn from an authoritative.

Exploiting the oboe to its full potential, Fantaisie Pastorale is an exciting and challenging addition to the advanced oboists' repertoire. From Lent to Allegro passages, this piece by French composer Eugène Bozza (1905-1991) covers a huge variety of the oboe's possibilities. The piece begins with an emotional, characterised cadenza, portraying the pastoral title. However, the tempo gradually increases through the piece, evoking the fantasy aspect, climaxing with flourishing semiquavers and ending with a grand tonic cadence. Bozza's Fantaisie Pastorale for Oboe and Piano is not only symbolic, but also includes exciting challenges, making for an imperative performance piece in the oboe repertoire.

Composed for oboe and piano accompaniment, Piece V by Cesar Franck is a melodious piece for intermediate players. The piece begins with a quiet introduction starting Andantino quasi allegretto. The main theme is then played twice with the piano introducing each phrases followed by the oboe repeating them. The piece ends in a really nice harmony between the oboe and the piano. There is no major difficulty in this really soft work which would be thoroughly enjoyed by the audience during a recital. Cesar Franck (1822-1890) was a renowned musician (organ and piano), composer and professor born in the United Kingdom of Netherland (Liege) who was based in Paris. Even though he only produced few compositions, some of these pieces were very famous such as Symphony in D minor and Prelude, Chorale and Fugue among others.

Andante for oboe and piano was found only after the composers death in 2014. According to his private notes discovered by his family, it was written in 1951, which means that it is one of its earliest compositions. This one-part work, set in neoromantic aesthetics, is based on two themes. The first one - in D Minor - initially appears in the piano part, and then it is captured by the oboe. It puts a listener in a tranquil, sentimental mood. The second one - in D Major - is livelier and jollier (piu mosso), though in terms of melodic motifs some of its fragments come closer to the first theme in a form of its variation-style development. This is capped by a solo cadenza of the oboe that leads to the recapitulation of the first theme and the following tranquil, cantilena-style coda. Jozef Swiders Andante for oboe and piano, despite its charming simplicity, is a work full of reverie, nostalgia and subtle melancholy. This proves the young composer's liking for clarity, lyricism and romantic expression, typical of his late artistic work.

Originally thought to have been written for Clarinet in C and Orchestra, recent scholarship, culminating in Heinz Holliger’s brilliant recording (Philips 9500 564), has provided many good reasons why the oboe is clearly the solo instrument. Not only does it ‘look like’ oboe music but the writing (within the oboe’s exact range at that time) ignores more than an octave of the clarinet’s potential range. Also, it is most unusual to find the solo wind instrument duplicated in the accompanying orchestral parts, thus providing unnecessary competition in timbre.Frédéric Chopin: Variations on a Theme by RossiniNo such ambiguity surrounds the origin of Chopin’s Variations on a Theme from Rossini’s opera La Cenerentola — orginally for flute. It is not definitely known for whom they were written, but they may have been either for his father (who played the flute), or for his close friend Matuszynski. They date from 1826-30 and here transposed from the original E major into D major for the oboe, provide a valuable addition to the oboist’s nineteenth century repertoire.[/bg_collapse]Arranged by Mark GoddardGrades 7–8Former Spartan Press Cat. âOboe Concerto 1945, inspired by an American soldier, (oboist from Chicago)â â was what Richard Strauss noted down. And the oboist 0nd soldier with the American occupation John de Lancie had indeed asked Richard Strauss in May 1945 whether he had ever thought of writing an oboe concerto. Strauss answered in the negative, but soon got to work anyway. In October 1945, he had completed the score in Swiss exile; the premiere took place in Zurich in 1946. Not until 1948 did the first edition appear in London, presumably for the most part without the composer's involvement, for both the printed score and the orchestral parts exhibit numerous errors. Some of these have been known for a while, though others have only now been discovered by Hansjörg Schellenberger through his exact reconciliation of the autograph full score with the autograph particella. The world-class oboist thus presents this concerto for thefirst time in a Henle Urtext edition in both full score and piano reduction!

It is difficult to determine exactly how many oboe concertos Antonio Vivaldi wrote. Although the present Concerto in F major was earlier seen as a secure work by Vivaldi (therefore it has the old RV-number 458), Vivaldi's authorship got even more disputable (in contrast to the C major Concerto RV 446 MR 2294). The doubts cannot even be dispelled by the existence of two sources from a large collection in Lund, Sweden. The Adagio central movement deserves our particular attention, as it was transmitted in different versions in the two sources. In this first edition for oboe and piano, the non-ornamented version is given first and followed by the version supplied by editor Sandro Caldini with ornaments typical of Vivaldi's time, which make this version of the Adagio particularly interesting for performers. In this first edition for oboe and piano, the non-ornamented version is given first and followed by the version supplied by editor Sandro Caldini with ornaments typical of Vivaldi's time.

Al Valles, for oboe and piano, is a work that has two distinct characteristics-it is a concert work but was composed as a work for a final examination piece. The work is dedicated to Vicent Montalt, who performed it for his final examination at the Mozarteum in Saltzburg, 2012.Al Valles begins with a Paganini-like cadenza for the oboe which introduces the main feature of the work- the alternation of legato with spiccato which is at times rapid and at other times lento. The cadenza is followed by an Allegro which begins with decisiveness by the piano. The two instruments establish a game of brief and very specific rhythmic figures with rapid chromatic descents, which in the piano are in octaves. A tranquil and mysterious passage ends with a sudden fortissimo. The oboe plays another cadenza, reminiscent of the first one, which is followed by a return of the Allegro. However, this time the music stops on a trill on F # in the high register of the oboe. The work concludes with a rapid coda which begins brilliantly in the piano with chromatic descending octaves.

“As a prestigious composer of the early 20th century, Maurice Ravel's Piece in the Habanera style, transcribed for the Oboe by Fernand Gillet, or for Cor Anglais by G. A. Leduc, contains many features which continue to make the composer's music popular and loved to this day. Known for his masterful melodies and rich harmonies, Piece in the Habanera style clearly exemplifies these qualities through flourishing Oboe or Cor Anglais lines and evocative, chordal and rhythmic Piano accompaniments. Moreover, Habanera rhythms heard throughout the piece create further excitment. All of these musical elements combine to create a highly enjoyable piece for the Oboe and Cor Anglais repertoire. In addition, the clear print of separate solo and accompaniment parts in this edition of Piece in the Habanera style make this an irresistable purchase for aspiring Oboe and Cor Anglais players.â€.

In 1901, Flor Alpaerts finished his music studies at the Flemish School of Music of Antwerp, which later became the Royal Flemish Conservatory. He studied harmony and composition with Jan Blockx. In 1903 he became professor at this institute and from 1934 until 1941 its director. For one season (1922-1923) he was also director of the Royal Flemish Opera House of Antwerp together with the bass Arthur Steurbaut. His fame, as a composer and a conductor, came shortly after World War I, when he succeeded Eduard Keurvels in 1919 as conductor of the concerts organized by the Royal Zoological Society of Antwerp and as artistic director of the Peter Benoit Fonds. He also conducted the choral group Arti Vocali. As a composer, Flor Alpaerts was the leading figure in the Flemish impressionistic movement, utilizing an impressionism that came closer to Richard Strauss and Ottorino Respighi than to Claude Debussy. A highlight in this direction was the symphonic poem Pallieter (1921-1924). With his suite James Ensor, inspired by four works of the Ostend painter, he created an expressionistic work. In his later compositions he turned to neo-classicism. Though mostly known for writing larger scale works during his life, this Concertstuk for oboe and piano, composed towards the end of his life came at a time when he unexpectedly because to compose chamber music. In addition to this work for oboe, he composed a solo piece for clarinet, as well as four string quartets during his final years.
