From Lent to Allegro passages, this piece by French composer Eugène Bozza (1905-1991) covers a huge variety of the oboe's possibilities. The piece begins with an emotional, characterised cadenza, portraying the pastoral title. However, the tempo gradually increases through the piece, evoking the fantasy aspect, climaxing with flourishing semiquavers and ending with a grand tonic cadence. Composed for oboe and piano accompaniment, Piece V by Cesar Franck is a melodious piece for intermediate players. The piece begins with a quiet introduction starting Andantino quasi allegretto. The main theme is then played twice with the piano introducing each phrases followed by the oboe repeating them. The piece ends in a really nice harmony between the oboe and the piano. There is no major difficulty in this really soft work which would be thoroughly enjoyed by the audience during a recital. Cesar Franck (1822-1890) was a renowned musician (organ and piano), composer and professor born in the United Kingdom of Netherland (Liege) who was based in Paris. Even though he only produced few compositions, some of these pieces were very famous such as Symphony in D minor and Prelude, Chorale and Fugue among others.

Andante for oboe and piano was found only after the composers death in 2014. According to his private notes discovered by his family, it was written in 1951, which means that it is one of its earliest compositions. This one-part work, set in neoromantic aesthetics, is based on two themes. The first one - in D Minor - initially appears in the piano part, and then it is captured by the oboe. It puts a listener in a tranquil, sentimental mood. The second one - in D Major - is livelier and jollier (piu mosso), though in terms of melodic motifs some of its fragments come closer to the first theme in a form of its variation-style development. This is capped by a solo cadenza of the oboe that leads to the recapitulation of the first theme and the following tranquil, cantilena-style coda. Jozef Swiders Andante for oboe and piano, despite its charming simplicity, is a work full of reverie, nostalgia and subtle melancholy. This proves the young composer's liking for clarity, lyricism and romantic expression, typical of his late artistic work.

Jacques Ibert (1890-1962) studied at the Paris Conservatoire before embarking upon a successful composing career.
