Bagatelle for Oboe and Piano was composed in 1950. This is the first time that the piece has been published.Mary Chandler was born in Kent in 1911. She studied music privately, and her teachers included Harry Farjeon (composition), Margaret Eliot and Leon Goossens (oboe) and Harold Craxton (piano). She read English at Oxford University and taught in London schools before joining the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra as principal oboist. She appeared with the CBSO as soloist (oboe and piano) and composer and gave broadcasts and recitals in the Midlands. Later, as a free-lance orchestral player, she formed the Mercian Trio (flute, oboe and piano) which gave concerts around the country.In 1960 Mary became Area Director of the Kent Music School, in charge of its wind teaching and of the varied activities of its Tonbridge Music Centre. She conducted many student groups and composed and arranged music for them until she retired in 1971. She continued to be actively involved in music thereafter, examining, composing and organising concerts. She spent her later years in Gloucestershire and died in 1996.Dr. Kristin Leitterman is currently the Assistant Professor of Oboe at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, Arkansas, USA, where she teaches oboe and bassoon, Double Reed Techniques, and coaches small chamber ensembles. She is also the Director of the Lucarelli Oboe Master Class, a week-long immersive oboe master class founded by Bert Lucarelli in 1996. As a guest artist she has presented master classes at many institutions, including the Manhattan School of Music, New York University, and the Hartt School.As a researcher, Kirstin has interests in the life and works of Mary Chandler. She has presented her research at The Juilliard School, Music by Women Festival, the International Double Reed Society conferences, and the Brazilian Double Reed Society’s conference in João Pessoa, Paraíba, Brazil.

In 1901, Flor Alpaerts finished his music studies at the Flemish School of Music of Antwerp, which later became the Royal Flemish Conservatory. He studied harmony and composition with Jan Blockx. In 1903 he became professor at this institute and from 1934 until 1941 its director. For one season (1922-1923) he was also director of the Royal Flemish Opera House of Antwerp together with the bass Arthur Steurbaut. His fame, as a composer and a conductor, came shortly after World War I, when he succeeded Eduard Keurvels in 1919 as conductor of the concerts organized by the Royal Zoological Society of Antwerp and as artistic director of the Peter Benoit Fonds. He also conducted the choral group Arti Vocali. As a composer, Flor Alpaerts was the leading figure in the Flemish impressionistic movement, utilizing an impressionism that came closer to Richard Strauss and Ottorino Respighi than to Claude Debussy. A highlight in this direction was the symphonic poem Pallieter (1921-1924). With his suite James Ensor, inspired by four works of the Ostend painter, he created an expressionistic work. In his later compositions he turned to neo-classicism. Though mostly known for writing larger scale works during his life, this Concertstuk for oboe and piano, composed towards the end of his life came at a time when he unexpectedly because to compose chamber music. In addition to this work for oboe, he composed a solo piece for clarinet, as well as four string quartets during his final years.

Cyril Scott was an English composer, writer, and poet. He was essentially a late romantic composer, whose style was at the same time strongly influenced by impressionism. His harmony was notably exotic. Scott wrote around four hundred works,which include two mature symphonies, three operas, three Piano concertos,concertos for Violin, Cello, Oboe and Harpsichord, several overtures, four oratorios, as well as a mass of chamber music.
Scott composed his Concerto For Oboe & Orchestra in 1946. The three movements (Molto vigoroso - Andante,Pastorale:Tranquillo and Rondo giocoso: Allegronon troppo - cadenza - Con spirit) are published here with a Piano reduction of the orchestra accompaniment.

White Light was commissioned by Fumiko Teramoto, oboist with the Musashino Grand Concert Band from Tokyo, Japan. The request was for a moderately slow piece, of intermediate difficulty, which included White in the title, as this is her lucky colour. Composer Philip Sparke decided to use this suggestion to write a piece that was bright and light in terms of harmony and colour, with much use of simple major and minor chords and an emphasis on pure and transparent timbres. He was also keen to capture the essence and history of the oboe as a solo instrument - the piece is pastoral in character and often almost baroque in style. The main theme is then played twice with the piano introducing each phrases followed by the oboe repeating them. The piece ends in a really nice harmony between the oboe and the piano. There is no major difficulty in this really soft work which would be thoroughly enjoyed by the audience during a recital. Cesar Franck (1822-1890) was a renowned musician (organ and piano), composer and professor born in the United Kingdom of Netherland (Liege) who was based in Paris. Andante for oboe and piano was found only after the composers death in 2014. According to his private notes discovered by his family, it was written in 1951, which means that it is one of its earliest compositions. This one-part work, set in neoromantic aesthetics, is based on two themes. The first one - in D Minor - initially appears in the piano part, and then it is captured by the oboe. It puts a listener in a tranquil, sentimental mood. The second one - in D Major - is livelier and jollier (piu mosso), though in terms of melodic motifs some of its fragments come closer to the first theme in a form of its variation-style development. This is capped by a solo cadenza of the oboe that leads to the recapitulation of the first theme and the following tranquil, cantilena-style coda. Jozef Swiders Andante for oboe and piano, despite its charming simplicity, is a work full of reverie, nostalgia and subtle melancholy. This proves the young composer's liking for clarity, lyricism and romantic expression, typical of his late artistic work.

The Hungarian composer Istvan Szelenyi (1904-1972) studied composition with Zoltan Kodaly and later taught at the Conservatoire of Budapest. He wrote primarily chamber and piano music. His hitherto unpublished Sonata for oboe and piano was written in 1969 and constitutes an important contribution to the rather small 20th-century oboe repertoire. The one-movement sonata is composed in free tonality and thrives on charming rhythmic turns borrowed from Hungarian folk music.

Composer's Note Second Meeting was written in January 1992. The first performance took place in Stockholm in February (Bengt Rosengren, oboe and Stefan Bojsten, piano). The work belongs to a planned series of virtuoso duos, ââ¬Åmeetingsââ¬Â. The first one (from 1982) is written for clarinet and harpsichord. Formally, Second Meeting is very close to a familiar ââ¬Åtheme and variationsââ¬Â category, although there are seven themes, or melodies, all quite closely related. In the autumn of the same year I decided to write a version of the piece for oboe and a small orchestra, trying to remain reasonably faithful to the original (a la Ravel, perhaps). French oboist, organist, teacher and composer, Charles Colin (1832-1881) studied at the Paris Conservatoire where he won many prizes. Colin then went on to lead a successful musical career and his wealth of experience led to the composition of Famous Solos for Competitions, which remain highly regarded to this day. Significantly, the entire compilation of Famous Solos for Competitions was performed 1983 by oboe students at the University of Washington. The first solo, Colin's Opus 33 is challenging for the advanced oboist. The work addresses many technicalities, including complex rhythms, a range of articulation, variations in performance directions, dynamics and time signatures, ornamentation and wide range, among other aspects. For all aspiring, advanced oboe players, Colin's Famous Solos for Competitions is an essential addition to the repertoire, providing excellent audition and competition pieces.

An Evening in the Village was composed in 1908 as no. 5 of the Ten Easy Piano Pieces. It has become one of Bartók's favorite works, which the composer himself was fond of playing at recitals. As he explained in an American interview, it was ''an original composition that is ... with themes of my own invention but ... the themes are in the style of the Hungarian-Transylvanian folk tunes. There are two themes. The first one is a parlando-rubato-rhythm and the second one is more in a dance-like rhythm. The second one is more or less the imitation of a peasant flute playing.'' Bartók also orchestrated the piece in 1931 as no. 1 of Hungarian Sketches. In 2015 we are launching aseries entitled Bartók Transcriptions for Music Students to mark the 70th anniversary of the composer s death. This involves reissuing our tried publications, and publishing some further, new transcriptions that fulfill in every respect the strict aesthetic demands of the earlier ones. We trust these publications will allow us to introduce still more music students to the realm of one of the great geniuses of 20th-century music.
