âOboe Concerto 1945, inspired by an American soldier, (oboist from Chicago)â â was what Richard Strauss noted down. And the oboist 0nd soldier with the American occupation John de Lancie had indeed asked Richard Strauss in May 1945 whether he had ever thought of writing an oboe concerto. Strauss answered in the negative, but soon got to work anyway. In October 1945, he had completed the score in Swiss exile; the premiere took place in Zurich in 1946. Not until 1948 did the first edition appear in London, presumably for the most part without the composer's involvement, for both the printed score and the orchestral parts exhibit numerous errors. Some of these have been known for a while, though others have only now been discovered by Hansjörg Schellenberger through his exact reconciliation of the autograph full score with the autograph particella. The world-class oboist thus presents this concerto for thefirst time in a Henle Urtext edition in both full score and piano reduction!

In 1901, Flor Alpaerts finished his music studies at the Flemish School of Music of Antwerp, which later became the Royal Flemish Conservatory. He studied harmony and composition with Jan Blockx. In 1903 he became professor at this institute and from 1934 until 1941 its director. For one season (1922-1923) he was also director of the Royal Flemish Opera House of Antwerp together with the bass Arthur Steurbaut. His fame, as a composer and a conductor, came shortly after World War I, when he succeeded Eduard Keurvels in 1919 as conductor of the concerts organized by the Royal Zoological Society of Antwerp and as artistic director of the Peter Benoit Fonds. He also conducted the choral group Arti Vocali. As a composer, Flor Alpaerts was the leading figure in the Flemish impressionistic movement, utilizing an impressionism that came closer to Richard Strauss and Ottorino Respighi than to Claude Debussy. A highlight in this direction was the symphonic poem Pallieter (1921-1924). With his suite James Ensor, inspired by four works of the Ostend painter, he created an expressionistic work. In his later compositions he turned to neo-classicism. Though mostly known for writing larger scale works during his life, this Concertstuk for oboe and piano, composed towards the end of his life came at a time when he unexpectedly because to compose chamber music. In addition to this work for oboe, he composed a solo piece for clarinet, as well as four string quartets during his final years.

This edition replaces the old Nova Edition NM394 and the subsequent but also now defunct EMA142. Both previous editions are now out of print. This is a freshly edited, updated and greatly improved edition.[bg_collapse view=link color=#4a4949 icon=arrow expand_text=Show More collapse_text=Show Less ]Gioacchino Rossini: Variations for Oboe and PianoRossini was still a student at the Liceo Filarmonico in Bologna when he wrote these Variations at the age of 18. Originally thought to have been written for Clarinet in C and Orchestra, recent scholarship, culminating in Heinz Holliger’s brilliant recording (Philips 9500 564), has provided many good reasons why the oboe is clearly the solo instrument. Not only does it ‘look like’ oboe music but the writing (within the oboe’s exact range at that time) ignores more than an octave of the clarinet’s potential range. Also, it is most unusual to find the solo wind instrument duplicated in the accompanying orchestral parts, thus providing unnecessary competition in timbre.Frédéric Chopin: Variations on a Theme by RossiniNo such ambiguity surrounds the origin of Chopin’s Variations on a Theme from Rossini’s opera La Cenerentola — orginally for flute. It is not definitely known for whom they were written, but they may have been either for his father (who played the flute), or for his close friend Matuszynski. They date from 1826-30 and here transposed from the original E major into D major for the oboe, provide a valuable addition to the oboist’s nineteenth century repertoire.[/bg_collapse]Arranged by Mark GoddardGrades 7–8Former Spartan Press Cat. French oboist, organist, teacher and composer, Charles Colin (1832-1881) studied at the Paris Conservatoire where he won many prizes. Colin then went on to lead a successful musical career and his wealth of experience led to the composition of Famous Solos for Competitions, which remain highly regarded to this day. Significantly, the entire compilation of Famous Solos for Competitions was performed 1983 by oboe students at the University of Washington. The first solo, Colin's Opus 33 is challenging for the advanced oboist. The work addresses many technicalities, including complex rhythms, a range of articulation, variations in performance directions, dynamics and time signatures, ornamentation and wide range, among other aspects. For all aspiring, advanced oboe players, Colin's Famous Solos for Competitions is an essential addition to the repertoire, providing excellent audition and competition pieces.

Quickly emulating the outstanding success of the descant tutors, these books are very popular even with those who normally use tutors other than the Enjoy the Recorder series.

It s quite rare when a composer s diploma work becomes a successful, popular piece even after 70 years. Frigyes Hidas (1928 2007) Oboe Concerto, written in 1951, is a work that Péter Pongrácz, Lajos Lencsés, and many other Hungarian and foreign oboists gladly add to their concert programs. It is difficult to pinpoint exactly what stylistic conventions helped to form the musical language of the Oboe Concerto: the three-movement form is suggestive of Viennese Classicism, and Hungarian motifs of the era can also be detected here and there. However, the main influences can be felt from the Neoclassicism of the 1920s and 1930s, the Baroque era, and the French woodwind school. Aswith all of his musical creations, Hidas demonstrates here that he is a master of instrumental knowledge, consideration towards his works performers, and tasteful moderation. This publication is printed on high-quality, age-resistant, pale-yellow paper that is produced in an environmentally-friendly, climate-neutral manner using renewable raw materials.
