Composer's Note Second Meeting was written in January 1992. The first performance took place in Stockholm in February (Bengt Rosengren, oboe and Stefan Bojsten, piano). The work belongs to a planned series of virtuoso duos, ââ¬Åmeetingsââ¬Â. The first one (from 1982) is written for clarinet and harpsichord. Formally, Second Meeting is very close to a familiar ââ¬Åtheme and variationsââ¬Â category, although there are seven themes, or melodies, all quite closely related. In the autumn of the same year I decided to write a version of the piece for oboe and a small orchestra, trying to remain reasonably faithful to the original (a la Ravel, perhaps). An Evening in the Village was composed in 1908 as no. 5 of the Ten Easy Piano Pieces. It has become one of Bartók's favorite works, which the composer himself was fond of playing at recitals. As he explained in an American interview, it was ''an original composition that is ... with themes of my own invention but ... the themes are in the style of the Hungarian-Transylvanian folk tunes. There are two themes. The first one is a parlando-rubato-rhythm and the second one is more in a dance-like rhythm. The second one is more or less the imitation of a peasant flute playing.'' Bartók also orchestrated the piece in 1931 as no. 1 of Hungarian Sketches. In 2015 we are launching aseries entitled Bartók Transcriptions for Music Students to mark the 70th anniversary of the composer s death. This involves reissuing our tried publications, and publishing some further, new transcriptions that fulfill in every respect the strict aesthetic demands of the earlier ones. We trust these publications will allow us to introduce still more music students to the realm of one of the great geniuses of 20th-century music. Andante for oboe and piano was found only after the composers death in 2014. According to his private notes discovered by his family, it was written in 1951, which means that it is one of its earliest compositions. This one-part work, set in neoromantic aesthetics, is based on two themes. The first one - in D Minor - initially appears in the piano part, and then it is captured by the oboe. It puts a listener in a tranquil, sentimental mood. The second one - in D Major - is livelier and jollier (piu mosso), though in terms of melodic motifs some of its fragments come closer to the first theme in a form of its variation-style development. This is capped by a solo cadenza of the oboe that leads to the recapitulation of the first theme and the following tranquil, cantilena-style coda. Jozef Swiders Andante for oboe and piano, despite its charming simplicity, is a work full of reverie, nostalgia and subtle melancholy. This proves the young composer's liking for clarity, lyricism and romantic expression, typical of his late artistic work.

An ABRSM syllabus title 2014-21, Grade 6.From 1906 on Béla Bartók was collecting folksongs on a regular basis. It was in 1907, during his first collecting trip to Transylvania, that he jotted down those three melodies in Gyergyóteker patak, Cs k, which he both provided with piano accompaniment (From Gyergyó) and arranged for solo piano (Three Hungarian Folksongs from Cs k) in the same year. The melodies were played by a ''sixty-year old man'' on a peasant flute. Al Valles, for oboe and piano, is a work that has two distinct characteristics-it is a concert work but was composed as a work for a final examination piece. The work is dedicated to Vicent Montalt, who performed it for his final examination at the Mozarteum in Saltzburg, 2012.Al Valles begins with a Paganini-like cadenza for the oboe which introduces the main feature of the work- the alternation of legato with spiccato which is at times rapid and at other times lento. The cadenza is followed by an Allegro which begins with decisiveness by the piano. The two instruments establish a game of brief and very specific rhythmic figures with rapid chromatic descents, which in the piano are in octaves. A tranquil and mysterious passage ends with a sudden fortissimo. The oboe plays another cadenza, reminiscent of the first one, which is followed by a return of the Allegro. However, this time the music stops on a trill on F # in the high register of the oboe. The work concludes with a rapid coda which begins brilliantly in the piano with chromatic descending octaves.

“Born to an Italian father and a French mother, Eugène Bozza (1905-1991) divided his music studies between the Academia Santa Cecilia in Rome and the Conservatoire de Paris, where he was taught by Henri Büsser and Henri Rabaud. His chamber music compositions reveal a marked predilection for wind instruments, as reflected in Fantaisie pastorale for oboe and piano (1939) and New-Orléans for bass saxhorn and piano (1944). During his stay a few years earlier at the Villa Medici in Rome (1936), Bozza had written his Aria Pour Saxophone Alto Et Piano ' a free adaptation of the third movement of Johann Sebastian Bach's Organ Pastorale in F major BWV 590. This expansive and nostalgic melody, which unfolds over a regular meter, has become one of the most widely played SaxoEphone pieces in the world. Having enjoyed such success, Éditions Leduc has decided to supplement its republication with an audio version that will enable saxoEphonists to carry out 'full-scale' practice.&rdquo.

In 1901, Flor Alpaerts finished his music studies at the Flemish School of Music of Antwerp, which later became the Royal Flemish Conservatory. He studied harmony and composition with Jan Blockx. In 1903 he became professor at this institute and from 1934 until 1941 its director. For one season (1922-1923) he was also director of the Royal Flemish Opera House of Antwerp together with the bass Arthur Steurbaut. His fame, as a composer and a conductor, came shortly after World War I, when he succeeded Eduard Keurvels in 1919 as conductor of the concerts organized by the Royal Zoological Society of Antwerp and as artistic director of the Peter Benoit Fonds. He also conducted the choral group Arti Vocali. As a composer, Flor Alpaerts was the leading figure in the Flemish impressionistic movement, utilizing an impressionism that came closer to Richard Strauss and Ottorino Respighi than to Claude Debussy. A highlight in this direction was the symphonic poem Pallieter (1921-1924). With his suite James Ensor, inspired by four works of the Ostend painter, he created an expressionistic work. In his later compositions he turned to neo-classicism. Though mostly known for writing larger scale works during his life, this Concertstuk for oboe and piano, composed towards the end of his life came at a time when he unexpectedly because to compose chamber music. In addition to this work for oboe, he composed a solo piece for clarinet, as well as four string quartets during his final years.

The Hungarian composer Istvan Szelenyi (1904-1972) studied composition with Zoltan Kodaly and later taught at the Conservatoire of Budapest. He wrote primarily chamber and piano music. His hitherto unpublished Sonata for oboe and piano was written in 1969 and constitutes an important contribution to the rather small 20th-century oboe repertoire. The one-movement sonata is composed in free tonality and thrives on charming rhythmic turns borrowed from Hungarian folk music.

White Light was commissioned by Fumiko Teramoto, oboist with the Musashino Grand Concert Band from Tokyo, Japan. The request was for a moderately slow piece, of intermediate difficulty, which included White in the title, as this is her lucky colour. Composer Philip Sparke decided to use this suggestion to write a piece that was bright and light in terms of harmony and colour, with much use of simple major and minor chords and an emphasis on pure and transparent timbres. He was also keen to capture the essence and history of the oboe as a solo instrument - the piece is pastoral in character and often almost baroque in style.
