Bakashot are piyyutim (religious poems) which are sung late at night mostly on Sabbaths and holidays. These poems have many spiritual and mystical influences, and their origin is among the Sephardic Jews before the Expulsion from Spain. The singing of the bakashot was expanded during the 16th Century, particularly by the mystics in Safed, and appears also in the singing of the the maftirim among Turkish Jews. These four miniatures for oboe solo are personal prayers written in the inspiration of the bakashot.Daniel Akiva is a composer, performer, and educator whose performances on guitar and lute have won great acclaim. Mr. Akiva graduated from the Rubin Academy of Music in Jerusalem in 1981, where he studied classical guitar with Haim Asulin and composition with Haim Alexander. In 1987 he completed his studies at the Geneva Conservatorium in Switzerland where he studied lute with Jonathon Rubin and composition with Jean Ballisa. For many years, he headed the Music Department at the WIZO High School for the Arts in Haifa, which he founded in 1986, and served as the Artistic Director of the Guitar Gems Festival from 2006-2019. As part of his work at WIZO High School, he has developed a method for teaching free improvisation that has been incorporated into the music program at the school. Mr. Akiva has appeared in concert as a guitarist and lutist and given master classes in Israel, Europe, Russia, the United States, and Latin America. Daniel Akiva’s compositional output includes works for solo instruments, chamber ensembles, choir, voice and guitar, piano, and chamber orchestra. His works have been recorded on twelve CDs, the latest of which, Malchut, was issued by OR-TAV in 2014. A native of Haifa whose family has lived in Israel for over five hundred years, he was steeped in the Sephardic (Jewish-Spanish) tradition from his youth. Much of his compositional output has been devoted to a dialogue with the music of the Sephardic Jews. Daniel Akiva has also maintained a creative dialogue over many years with the poets and writers Amnon Shamash, Rivka Miriam, and Avner Peretz.

Racconto (Tale)/ Capri/ Cielo sereno (Clear sky)/ Tano/ Napolitango/ Luci della spiaggia (Beach lights)/ Fantasia mediterranea (Mediterranean fantasy)/ Una lacrima ridente (A smiling tear)/ Quartieri spagnoli/ Marcia dei pomodori (March of the tomatos)Being interested in certain aspects of popular music, I became aware of several similarities between popular Neapolitan melodies and the Argentinean tango. Napolitango is based on an imaginary journey to Naples and Buenos Aires. In retaining certain characteristics of the original music, Napolitango embodies an inspiration and an almost theatrically passionate character which is common to these two genres. The piece has been composed for the Parisian Festival Paris Banlieues Tango 2001.(S. Di Stefano).

The inspiration for Chants de la Terre (Songs of the Earth) and Le Réveil (The Awakening) was born during my creation of the musical theatre show â??dâ??Exil en Exilâ?? (performed at numerous international festivals) on the poetic work of Nazım Hikmet, (the great Turkish humanist poet). In this show, among other compositions, I sometimes played this music to accompany the poems â??Chants des Hommesâ?? and â??Réveilâ?? and sometimes played the pieces solo as a musical meditation.Chants de la Terre and Réveil came to life initially in 2007, thanks to Phylloscopus Publications and K. Dedicated to Titus Underwood, Principal Oboe, Nashville Symphony OrchestraOboe Duration: 5' Composed: 2020 Published by: Subito Music Publishing PROGRAM NOTE: The year 2020 has definitely been a very challenging year with many upheavals. During this time of the COVID-19 health crisis, wearing masks, and high racial tensions, I decided to compose four short solo woodwind works for flute, oboe, clarinet, and bassoon, which represent the core woodwind section in an orchestra. I was inspired to compose these short pieces after I first heard Igor Stravinsky's three short pieces for clarinet, which totals a little more than four minutes in duration. I thought that it would be nice to highlight and honor my African-American male colleagues in the orchestral music world. I wanted to celebrate the fact that they are the principal player in the section of their respective orchestras. The short pieces are as follows: Principal Brother No. 1 for flute solo for Demarre McGill, Principal Flute of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, Principal Brother No. 2 for oboe solo for Titus Underwood, Principal Oboe of the Nashville Symphony Orchestra, Principal Brother No. 3 for clarinet solo for Anthony McGill, Principal Clarinet of the New York Philharmonic, and Principal Brother No. 4 for bassoon solo for Bryan Young, Principal Bassoon of the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra. These works all begin with notes that are representative of their name; D for Demarre, B for Titus (ti in solfège starting on C), A for Anthony, and Bb for Bryan. There is also a rhythmic figure in the opening measures of each piece, which represent the utterance of their names. All four of these works are rhapsodic in nature with elements of improvisation. - James Lee III.

Metamorphoses after Britten was written for Melinda Maxwell, for UYMP's Signals volume of new music for Oboe. It was first performed by Melinda at York University on 24th November 2010. I - A Mountain II - Fixation III - Flowers IV - Fountains Metamorphoses after Britten by philipvenables Metamorphoses after Britten are just that: four miniatures, each inspired by one of Benjamin Britten’s Six Metamorphoses after Ovid for solo oboe. Each movement, over its short course, transforms gradually from one thing to another, ending, with the exception of Fountains, in a short, cathartic coda. Some of the movements also take specific musical elements from Britten’s pieces. I verymuch viewed these pieces as musical Haiku, and in that sense I hope they embody a sense of peace, brevity and simplicity. The oboe version of Metamorphoses after Britten is dedicated to Melinda Maxwell. The saxophone version of Metamorphoses after Britten, with an additional movement, is dedicated to Vicki and Andrew Vaughan - Philip Venables  .

I was inspired to create this work after attending a Greek mythology seminar at the University of Geneva: a collection of solo oboe or English horn pieces, allowing a certain freedom of improvisation to the performer. The muses are often shown in Ancient Greek art, holding musical instruments or other associated objects. The Nine Muses came to life initially in 2006, thanks to Phylloscopus Publications and K. R.
