Light Overture - A Symphonic Entertainment was composed by Poul Ruders in 2006. ...

Light Overture - A Symphonic Entertainment was composed by Poul Ruders in 2006. Commissioned by the Alabama Symphony Orchestra and Music Director and Principal Conductor Justin Brown for Alabama Power Company’s 100 Year Anniversary Concert. Light Overture subtitled A Symphonic Entertainment is a short piece for symphony orchestra lasting approximately eight minutes. Light Overture is focusing on two interpretations of the word light: ”light” as in the absence of darkness and “light” as in easily comprehensible; in other words a piece with few or no metaphysicalconnotations. It is just a piece setting a festive mood as is often the case with this sort of short “concert opener”. However the journey through Light Overture is not entirely happy-go-lucky. Once in a while slightly darker colours are introduced for the sake of variety and contrast. And formally the composition is quite strict: an outright Prelude and Fugue the former sliding seamlessly into the latter. The Fugue juggles not only its own tune but also picks up stuff from the Prelude. Poul Ruders May 2006

Solo for Oboe or Violin-'The title only appears frivolous to those who have lived little. With the passage of time the seasons that pass the differences in quantity and quality of light of temperature and weather become of ever greater importance in the meaning of our individual existence. This transformation follows the path of our lives and often mimes in front of our very own eyes incredulous and wondrous events that we can only experience once in a lifetime: our birth our blossoming our aging and our death. Such a subject could well take up ten years of my life. This was the case. Nevertheless everything started very innocently with a proposition from my friend François Leleux to write him a double concerto that he could play with Natalia Gutman initially named ‘Musica Concertante’. It was with this second proposition from François for another double concerto this time with Lisa Batiashvili that the idea came to me for a cycle of four concertos with each time a different instrument from the string quartet to join the oboe. The automnal colours of the cello are a perfect match for the retrospective nature of the first completed concerto in the cycle. ‘concerto nostalgico l’automne’ whilst the love and the first child of the Leleux-Batiashvili couple could only bring Spring to mind hence the ‘Concerto amoroso le printemps’ was born. When Jean-Marc Bador asked me to be an associate of the Ensemble Orchestral de Paris for two years it was quite naturally that I thought of completing this cycle for François Leleux with winter ‘Concerto tenebroso’ created in January 2010 with Lise berthaud playing the viola. All that remained was for me to conclude with a work that reunited all four protagonsits. It was summer the ‘Concerto luminoso’ which took on this role’.

FRANZ BERWALD (1796-1868) is regarded today not only as one of Sweden's most important composers but also due to his symphonies and his chamber music as a leading figure in the history of Northern European music of the 19th century. His compositions include in addition to four symphonies and the chamber music tone poems for orchestra concertos operas ('Estrella di Soria' and 'The Queen of Golconda') cantatas solo songs with piano accompaniment piano music and much more.Berwald's violin concerto in C sharp minor is the work of a young composer. The autograph score bears the date 1820; Berwald was 24 years old at the time. After the firstperformance the violin concerto fell into oblivion and was as far as we know never again performed in Berwald's lifetime. It was not brought to light again until 1903 when on May 19 the first movement was performed at the Annual Celebration of the Academy of Music of Stockholm.Urtext of the Berwald Complete EditionFull score (BA4905) and Violin & Piano reduction (BA4905-90) available for salePerformance material (BA4905-72) available for hire

The Concerto for Violin was written in early 2012 for Philip Ficsor. The four movements conceived separately are intended to have the feeling of a suite rather than a verbose heavy interpretation of the concerto form. The first movement A Little Parlour Music carries the subtitle after Poulenc in a reflection of the lightness and charm of that composer's work. The second movment Remembrance of Things Past is the most expressive of the movements. The third movement Santa Barbara Rag is full of syncopated rhythm and humor with even a slight reference to another well-known rag. And the fourth movement John Adams Light looks back at the early minimalism of Adams with itsrepitition and constant motion. The concerto is available with piano reduction and for rental with the full orchestra accompaniment.

Carl Vineâ??s Concerto for Orchestra was premiered to critical acclaim by the West Australian Symphony Orchestra in October 2014. Its composer describes the way the 20-minute work (like his recent Piano Trio The Village) â??evolves organically through a chain of episodes to create a web of melodies and harmonies that are related but not identical. This network of ideas is tied together by strong lateral bonds but remains fluid and flexible creating a series of fleeting glimpses what Prokofiev called visions fugitives abstract patterns glimpsed in the half-light or imagined behind clouds.â??

Serenade für 13 Instrumente-An announcement in the Wiener-Zeitung read: ?Concert. Today [23 March 1784] Herr [Anton] Stadler Sr. presently in the service of His Majesty the Emperor will hold a concert for his own benefit at the Royal Imperial National Court Theatre in which among other select pieces he will present a grand work for wind-band of a quite special character composed by Herr Mozart.? That this was almost certainly four movements from the present Serenade in B-flat major K.361 is suggested by an account of the occasion published some months later which states ?Today I heard a composition by Herr Mozart in 4 movements for wind ensemble . . . comprising 13 instruments: 4 horns 2oboes 2 bassoons 2 clarinetts 2 basset horns and a contrabass viol. . . .?Much music of the serenade-divertimento-cassation-Nachtmusik type was written in a light style and intended for social occasions rather than formal concerts. In such a context K.361 is striking for its seriousness of artistic content its length (seven movements lasting nearly an hour) and its extended instrumentation (most wind-band music of the period calls for five to eight or nine players not thirteen). If the work was not conceived in the first instance as a concert work its potential as such must have been recognized early on by Mozart or Stadler.- Urtext of the New Mozart Edition- Parts (BA5331-22) and study score format 22.5 x 16.5cm (TP312) available for sale

Third Part Of The Orchestral Triptych Triduum-Symphony: ‘Vigil’ (1997)...
(+)
Third Part Of The Orchestral Triptych Triduum-Symphony: ‘Vigil’ (1997) is the last of three interrelated works forming Triduum commissioned by the London Symphony Orchestra the other works being The World’s Ransoming for cor anglais and orchestra and the Cello Concerto (both 1996). All three relate to the historical events and religious liturgies of the Easter Triduum namely Maundy Thursday Good Friday and the Easter Vigil. The symphony’s first movement ‘Light’ deals with the promise of a glimmer of light in the darkness. The central movement ‘Tuba insonet salutaris’ (Sound the trumpet of salvation) is based on the Exsultet melody sung at the Easter Vigil described by Mozart as probably the mostbeautiful ever written. The final movement ‘Water’ opens savagely but subsides towards the presentation of two conflicting principal materials a wild ecstatic dance followed by a slower more mysterious texture leading to a climax and a luminous floating close.

Par RAMEAU JEAN-PHILIPPE. Richer than ever – Rameau’s “Zoroastre” in the version of 1756. Opera in five acts. Rameau’s revised version of his opera “Zoroastre”, which could be heard and seen between 20 January 1756 and 26 March 1757 at the Académie royale de musique, was favourably received. Also from today’s point of view the work profits dramaturgically from many of the changes and seems altogether richer and more tightly woven than the original of 1749. The subject matter of the libretto, derived from Ancient Persian sources, is timeless: the struggle between good and bad. The good is embodied by the religious reformer Zoroastre, a representative of the supreme light being Orosmade. He is opposed by the ambitious magician Abramane who serves Ariman, the spirit of the dark. The opera includes some of Rameau’s most ecstatic and spiritual musical numbers, such as the episode of sun worship in Act 3 with the sublime „Hymne à la Lumière“, which, for unknown reasons, was not integrated in the revision of 1756. It is therefore included in Appendix 3 of this Bärenreiter edition. Incidentally, with “Zoroastre” the prologue, wh ich had been customary since the beginnings of French opera in the 1670s, was abandoned. Instead Rameau was the first to introduce an overture which set the scene for the entire drama and thereby anticipated Gluck’s opera reform by many years. Here we present the instrumental numbers for concert performance. - Based on the first scholarly-critical edition, published as part of “Opera Omnia Rameau” - Instrumental numbers in order of performance, but also grouped by key in the list of contents, enabling them to be combined freely into orchestral suites - Published with performance material on hire / Date parution : 2022-11-08/ Répertoire / Orchestre

(+)
Haydn composed his Symphony no. 76 at the same time as his Symphonies nos. 77 and 78 for a planned trip to England that never took place. Nonetheless, H. C. Robbins Landon calls these works the ?English symphonies? as they arestylistically closely linked to the ?London Bach?, Johann Christian Bach. Haydn himself, in a letter of 1783 to his Parisian publisher Charles-Georges Boyer, described the symphonies as ?Leicht und nicht vil Concertirend?, meaningthat they were light in spirit and did not contain extensive solo passages but rather a clear sense of classical form. Continuing the cooperation between Bärenreiter and the G. Henle publisher regarding Haydn?s large-scalechoral works, operas and symphonies, this edition is based on the G. Henle Complete Edition of the ?Works of Joseph Haydn?. The Bärenreiter catalogue now includes the complete performance material for several ?Sturm und Drang?symphonies as well as all the London and Paris symphonies.

Par GLERUP RUNE. My violin concerto would never have been written if I had not met Isabelle Faust. At a time when I had not written a single note for several months, doubting if I would ever write anything again, her interest and energy was the cause of new inspiration. Just as important was her special way of playing - with intellect, heart and a rare, delicate sensibility. Her personality and musicianship struck a chord in me, in my music, which gave my thoughts a new direction. The violin concerto marks a change in my music towards a simpler and lighter expression. An expression that also contains detached glimpses from my childhood's endless summers by the North Sea. Birds, high and slow on a blue sky, and the evening quietly descending. The special light, the distant sounds. But also the confusion, repetitions and dead ends of the world. An expression that, more than in my previous music, is 'About Light and Lightness.' - Rune Glerup, 2021 / Date parution : 2023-10-31/ Répertoire / Orchestre
