Along with Symphonies Nos. 80 and 81, Haydn’s Symphony in F major Hob. I:79 belongs to a group of works that he composed in late 1784. He wrote them for his employer Prince Nikolaus Esterházy who wished to be entertained with new music. The symphonies were tailored for the twenty-five to thirty musicians who were in the prince’s court orchestra.Continuing the cooperation between Bärenreiter and the G. Henle publishing company regarding Haydn's large-scale choral works, operas and symphonies, this edition is based on the G. Henle Complete Edition of the “Works of Joseph Haydnâ€. Bärenreiter has already published the complete performance material for several “Sturm und Drang†symphonies and all the Paris and London symphonies.

Joseph Haydn's so-called Paris Symphonies were composed in 1785 and 1786 for the masonic lodge “Société Olympique†in Paris, which ran a large orchestra and organised regular concerts. These six works are notable for their artful motivic work and playful wit. Haydn here pays tribute both to the discerning taste of the Paris audience and to the excellent abilities of the musicians in the orchestra. These symphonies rapidly became famous and popular throughout Europe, thanks to editions published variously in Paris, Vienna and London. In this Symphony in A major, composed in 1785, Haydn provides the flute with concertante solo passages in the Adagio which was perhaps a nod to the instrument’s popularity in France at the time. This study edition reproduces the musical text of the Haydn Complete Edition, which is a guarantor of the finest scholarship. An informative preface and a brief critical report make this handy score an ideal companion for all Haydn fans, both present and future.

Handel’s Concerto in F major (HWV 331) was long considered a variant of two movements from the three suites of his “Water Music†(HWV 348-350). Recently our understanding of the “Water Music†had to be thoroughly revised owing to new scholarly discoveries. Not only did the structure of the three suites prove to be unhistorical, but Friedrich Chrysander’s 19th-century view turned out to be correct: the two “variants†actually constitute an independent concerto. In musical terms, HWV 331 is related to two movements of the “Water Music†and is frequently performed alongside them. Now it is available for the first time in a performing edition based on the already revised volume of the “Halle Handel Editionâ€, which reflects the current state of scholarship concerning the complex source tradition of the “Water Music†and the Concerto HWV 331.

Haydn’s “Sturm und Drang†symphonies along with the London and the Paris symphonies belong to his most popular works today. The “Sturm und Drang†works contain not only masterpieces such as the already published “Farewell-Symphony†and the “Maria Theresia†symphony but also gems such as the recently published “La Passione†symphony (2013) and now the Symphony in B major No. 46.The publication of this symphony represents a continuation of the collaboration between Bärenreiter and the Henle publishing company in the areas of large vocal compositions, operas and symphonic works. The Symphony in B major is based on the Henle Complete Edition of the “Works of Joseph Haydn†and is published with a full score and large format performing material on sale.

Haydn’s Symphony in G major Hob. I:81 comes from a series of three symphonies completed in late 1784 (nos. 81, 80 and 79, presumably in that order). No autograph score survives for Hob. I:81, thus our Urtext edition is based on copyists’ manuscripts and first editions. As with so many of his symphonies, Haydn wrote this one to provide new music for his employer, Prince Nikolaus Esterházy.Continuing the collaboration between Bärenreiter and the G. Bärenreiter has now published the complete performance material for several Sturm und Drang symphonies and all the London and Paris symphonies (Nos. 81 to 104).

Letters of the composer have come down to us only on a few of Haydn’s symphonies, amongst them the “Laudon†Symphony Hob. I:69. In one of these letters, Haydn agrees to the publisher’s suggestion to name the symphony after the widely known and favoured general Gideon Ernst von Laudon (1717-1790). By using this name, both composer and publisher hoped to increase the commercial success of the work which possibly deserved a military eponym considering its instrumentation with timpani and trumpets. Also, the symphony requires two bassoons, but no flutes, corresponding with the available musicians at the court of Esterházy between 1775 and 1776. In continuation of the collaboration between Bärenreiter and G. Henle Verlag, this edition is based on the Urtext of the Complete Edition “Joseph Haydn Works†published by G. Henle Verlag.

This edition clarifies a performance aspect of Haydn’s Symphony in G major that has long been misunderstood: in m. 1 of the second movement (Largo) the viola, violoncello and several wind instrument parts are marked “soloâ€, indicating that they play important motifs or themes and ought to stand out. Contrary to other editions, the “solo†marking in the violoncello should not be construed as indicating a solo instrument with the remaining cellos doubling the basses. Rather, the cellos should play as a section so as to stand out all the more clearly.Continuing the collaboration between Bärenreiter and the Henle publishing company in large-scale choral works, operas and symphonies, this edition is based on the Henle Complete Edition of the “Works of Joseph Haydnâ€. The complete performance material for several “Sturm und Drang†symphonies and all of the London and Paris symphonies is now available from Bärenreiter.

Haydn’s Symphony in C major Hob. I: 90, dated 1788 in the autograph, belongs to a group of works that he composed between the Paris symphonies (Hob. I: 82–87) and the London symphonies (Hob. I: 93–104). It thus belongs to the last symphonies he wrote before his journeys to England in 1791–92 and 1794–95. Continuing the collaboration between Bärenreiter and the G. Henle publishing company regarding Haydn's large-scale choral works, operas and symphonies, this edition is based on the G. Henle Complete Edition of the Works of Joseph Haydn. With Symphony No. 90, Bärenreiter has now published the complete performance material for all the symphonies from Nos. 82 to 104 as well as several Sturm und Drang symphonies.

Jacob vs. Angel is a piece about crisis of conscience, ambiguity, and misinterpretation expressed through the depiction of a major battle, the goal of which is never made entirely clear. Based on the biblical story, the work is highly programmatic, with each of the six movements reflecting a corresponding stanza from the titular poem by Alice Weaver Flaherty. The piece was originally composed as a vehicle for virtuoso organist Heinrich Christensen, and later orchestrated. The first movement introduces the main musical material--a five note motive, the intervals of which are reorganized to create melodic and harmonic development throughout the piece. The second, third, and fourth movements depict the brutal fight between Jacob and the angel, and lead one to the next without pause. The fifth movement is about the post-battle scene, and the final movement is an epilogue, reframing the ideas from the previous movements. The music elucidates various actions from the Flaherty poem—sand skittering across the desert, aggressive acts of violence and sensuality between the protagonists, the beating of wings, feathers blowing in the wind, etc. But beyond the music's more literal elements, the work is designed to express an abstract state of mind, a sense of unease, and anticipation of what is yet to come. —Graham Gordon Ramsay2(2) 1,1 2 2; 2221; 7perc, hp, cel; stgs Duration: 24'Composed: 2023 Published by: Distributed Composer Jacob vs Angel was composed originally as a solo concert organ work in 2007; the orchestral version was completed in 2023. As part of the year 2023, dedicated to Swiss composers, the Swiss Wind Band Association has commissioned Gauthier Dupertuis to write a new orchestration of the Overture in E-flat major by Stephan Jaeggi. Indeed, an update of the instrumentation was necessary for the interpretation of this work with modern orchestras. Therefore, the orchestration that Gauthier Dupertuis proposes and which he wanted to be faithful to the original while meeting current standards, will allow todayÂ’s orchestras to perform this piece of classical-romantic inspiration. Stephan Jaeggi was a Swiss composer and conductor who was born into a large family in Fulenbach (Canton of Solothurn) in 1903. He began playing the clarinet at the age of 13, then studied music at the Basel Conservatory and attended his military training with the Swiss Army Band. Thereafter, he became the conductor of several wind orchestras. In this role, and also that of a composer, Stephan Jaeggi went on to achieve great success. His early death in 1957 put a premature end to Stephan Jaeggi's creative life. All the more reason why his work lives on with unbroken power to this day.
