There were wild oatsAnd the soil was blackBut sparkledWhen the sun was outThe air sharp in the nostrilsHard to defineSomewhere between knife and coal andAcid and that special light and sweetWhiteness thornbushes exhaleIt was nothing specialBecause everything was special...Thus the opening line of the poem TERRAINS VAGUES by Klaus Rifbjerg, the Danish Poet. I chose to adopt this title for my orchestral work, because of its closeness in associations: an indeterminable, often polarized, state of rhythmic and tonal ambiguity. The expression seems created by the Franch author, Victor Hugo:And here lies the fascination: in the kinds of terrains vagues, which are simultaniously bizarre and ugly, as if created by two alien species of nature. To watch the suburb is like observing and amphibium: trees vanish, roofs appear, grass vanish, cobble stones appear, ploughing fields vanish, shops appear, beaten tracks vanish - passions appear; the murmur of Nature Divine ends, the noise of Mankind takes over. (Victor Hugo)Still, the atmosphere as well as the material of TERRAINS VAGUES have its origin, in my SYMPHONY NO. 6 (1999), the last minute of which, cut up rough, appears as the start of my new work. The music of TERRAINS VAGUES subdivides itself, without breaks, into three sections, or shades:I: TERRAINS - II: VAGUES (Waves) III: TERRAINS VAGUES.Per Norgard, March 2001.

The Sieidi concerto is in one movement but divided into several sections both faster and slower, wildly rhythmic, lyrical and more static. For the soloist it is extremely demanding because he is constantly having to switch from one technique to another - for djembe and darabuka playing with the hands differs radically from that of tom-tom or drumstick technique or the playing of pitched percussion instruments such as the marimba and vibraphone.Normally, in a percussion concerto, the soloist has to play surrounded by a huge battery of instruments, often behind the orchestra. In Sieidi he uses only nine instruments, and he is in front of the orchestra the whole time. The instruments are in a row in front of the platform, starting with the djembe on the far right (as viewed by the audience) and ending with the tam-tam on the far left. The soloist plays only one instrument at a time. The title of the concerto, Sieidi, is Sami - a language spoken in the northern region of Finland, Sweden and Norway known as Lapland. It denotes an ancient cult place such as an unusually-shaped rock, sometimes also a special rock face or even a whole mountain fell. Called a toccata because it demonstrates the touch and technique of the orchestra sections, this piece states the melody in different ways, sometimes briskly and sometimes in augmentation against moving accompanimental figures. A showy and exciting arrangement, perfect for a postlude or finale.

Joseph Haydn's so-called Paris Symphonies were composed in 1785 and 1786 for the masonic lodge “Société Olympique†in Paris, which ran a large orchestra and organised regular concerts. These six works are notable for their artful motivic work and playful wit. Haydn here pays tribute both to the discerning taste of the Paris audience and to the excellent abilities of the musicians in the orchestra. These symphonies rapidly became famous and popular throughout Europe, thanks to editions published variously in Paris, Vienna and London. It is a matter of debate whether or not this Symphony no. 85, “La Reine†(“The Queenâ€), was really given its nickname because it was the favorite symphony of Marie-Antoinette. The name certainly did not stem from Haydn, but it was nevertheless stated on the title page of the edition published by Imbault in Paris as early as 1788. This study edition reproduces the musical text of the Haydn Complete Edition, which is a guarantor of the finest scholarship. An informative preface and a brief critical report make this handy score an ideal companion for all Haydn fans, both present and future.

This popular folk song from the Hebei Province, a unique geographical area surrounding the capital city of Beijing, is a great favorite there because of its memorable melody. In his score notes Mr. Wang explains that Chinese duets resemble a question-and-answer conversation between voices, which aptly describes the form and character of this setting for student strings. Young string players do not get the opportunity to play Brahms often because much of his greatest music is written for piano and other works are too complex. But embedded in the fiery Rhapsody In B Minor (Op. 79, No. 1) is a beautiful interlude which takes on a form of its own. Simple melodies are passed among all instruments and harmonized in parallel 3rds and 6ths. Simple repeated 8th-note patterns with some ties create the undulating current in the accompaniment which drives the piece to its dynamic extremes. Duration 3:00. Available in SmartMusic.

Brahms composed his Triumphlied for eight-part chorus, solo baritone and orchestra as a direct reaction to the victory of the German army in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 and the consequent founding of the German Empire. Similar to the German Requiem completed shortly before, Brahms himself compiled the text from the Bible, in this case from Chapter 19 of the Book of Revelations. Because of the somewhat melodramatic tone of the composition and the nationalistic background to the works genesis, in recent years the Triumphlied has seldom been heard in concert halls. Unlike overly-patriotic occasional works such as Richard Wagner's Kaisermarsch, the Triumphlied is true Brahms and is a musically rich composition. This study edition takes the musical text from the Brahms Complete Edition (HL 51486030), thereby representing the highest scholarly precision. The Appendix contains an exciting new discovery, a previously-unknown early version of the 1st movement in C major, which was only rediscovered in 2012 in Bremen.

Though A.E. Brachvogel's portrayal of the failed genius in his biography about W.F. Bach drew an impressive picture of the inner turmoil of the eldest Bach son's personality, it is rather unproductive for the understanding of his music. However, legends often or mostly contain a core of truth: There is no doubt that the highly gifted musician failed because of the overwhelming example of his father (as composer) particularly since he was on the threshold from one epoch to another. In the adagio, both flute parts rising above the string orchestra are assigned a quality of expression that can already be related to the sentimental age whereas the second movement, a more or less strict string fugue, is rooted in the tradition-conscious baroque period.

Young string musicians will enjoy performing this heavy rock style piece because it utilizes an aggressive style and mixed tonality similar to 'their' music that they listen to for fun. The concept behind the title of this piece is that, although we sometimes move dully through our daily routines, it is good to take time to appreciate the individual moments that make up our lives, like a child does the first time they experience something. All parts are in first position with few accidentals or difficult bowing patterns. At the same time, this piece will challenge your group with its independent voicings and syncopated, interlocking rhythms. This piece would add variety to any school concert, and would fit nicely in a festival program, especially one that utilized several different genres. (3:40).

Rameau's “Les Fêtes de l'Hymen et de l'Amour†was long considered second-rate because its première was associated with a political event. Yet this ballet abounds in novel dramaturgical effects that foreshadow his later operas, such as “Zaïsâ€, “Zoroastre†and “Les Boradesâ€. Working together with his librettist Cahusac, Rameau sought to weave the dance numbers, choruses and stage machinery more tightly into the main plot. He also experimented with stylistic devices unique to this work, the most famous being unquestionably the scene in which the Nile overflows its banks (an impressive ten-voice double chorus with solo voices and orchestra) and the sextet from “Arurisâ€, a scoring found nowhere else in his uvre. For the first time, this scholarly-critical edition of “Les Fêtes de l'Hymen et de l'Amour†presents a reference version of the work that is based on all the major sources for both the libretto and the music, including two recent musical discoveries. As most of the performance material for the première has vanished, our edition is based on the version prepared for the Acadmie Royale de Musique in 1748.

Of all Shaker hymns, this is undoubtedly the best known because it served as the basis for Copland's ballet, Appalachian Spring. Arranged here for strings, it combines simple pentatonic melodies with memorable rhythms. Harmonics, tremolo and strummed chords in the keys of G and D add flair, and the score contains an excellent synopsis of Shaker life for students and audiences. Duration 2:15.

The 10 easy pieces adapted from piano pieces from the famous collection For Children offer an ideal approach to modern music. Numerous school orchestras have played this music with fun and success. Because the individual parts are technically easy, one may concentrate at once on interpretational subtleties (rubato, articulation, tonal nuances etc.).

Symphony, symphonic poem, fantasy, or something else entirely different? For a long time while working on the Sixth Symphony, Sibelius was not certain what his new orchestral work was now about to become or what to call it. He had to interrupt work on the symphony time and again during the Finnish civil war and because of financial difficulties that forced him to earn a living with little things. So, it is not surprising that many small ideas for other works repeatedly culminated in the Sixth. In a letter to a friend, he describes his early ideas for the work: The 6th symphony is wild and turbulent in character. Gloomy with pastoral contrasts. Probably in 4 movements with a conclusion growing into a dark orchestral shower in which the main theme drowns. The editor Kai Lindberg now presents the definitive version within the context of the Sibelius Complete Edition.

The Shaker hymn, Simple Gifts, is an arranger's delight because the tune lends itself so well to a wide variety of musical presentations. In this new version for student strings, an expressive middle section contrasts wonderfully with the more dramatic opening and closing sections. All parts are equally important, and the key of G puts young players in familiar territory.

Bach's harpsichord concerti, extremely popular among pianists, are presumably reworkings of pieces originally written for the violin. Bach, however, succeeded in transferring the diverse idiosyncrasies of violin technique to the keyboard with such ingenuity that most of today's pianists also include these concerti in their standard repertoire. The first concerto in D minor is perhaps the most popular - not least because of its jaunty outer movements and the eminently forceful solo part. Now, as a prelude to a series of all of Bach's harpsichord concerti, G. Henle Publishers presents a piano reduction and study edition (score) of the D-minor concerto. None other than András Schiff, the outstanding Bach expert, has provided fingering suggestions.

The Symphony No.39 In E Flat K.543 was finished in Vienna on 26th June 1788. Together with the symphonies in G minor and C major Jupiter (all three were composed in less than a month), it marks the summit of Mozart's achievementin symphonic form. Although this symphony breaks no new ground as regards the use of orchestral instruments, it is nevertheless one of the first examples of modern orchestration, because the resources of each instrument and thevarious combinations of timbre are here exploited with great skill. This miniature score is an excellent resource for perusal or private study of this work.
