Anton Bruckner (1824-1896) completed the 1st version of his Mass No. 3 in F minor in 1863, as Otto Kitzler was introducing him to the music of Richard Wagner, the composer he would emulate for the rest of his life. John Herbeck, who conducted the initial rehearsals for its premiere at the Augustinerkirch on June 16, 1872, warmly declared that it stood beside Beethoven's Missa Solemnis in greatness. Bruckner, often self-critical as a composer, went on to revise the work no less than four times until it was finally published it in 1894. More often heard today in the concert hall than in the church, the sprawling, hour-long work is admired today for its powerful directness. This critical edition was created in 1944 for the Bruckner Gesamtausgabe by Robert Maria Haas. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 2.2.3.0: Timp: Org (ad libitum): Str (4-4-3-3-3 in set): Solo SATB: Mix Chor. The organ ad libitum is absent from the Haas edition.

Thanks to its skilful combination of Romantic melody and sparkling virtuosity, Koussevitzky’s Double Bass Concerto op. 3 has been one of the most popular works of its genre since its Moscow premiere in 1905. No wonder, for the virtuoso double bass player Koussevitzky had composed it for his very own instrument. As early as 1906/07 a first piano reduction was published in Moscow, followed by a second in 1910 in Leipzig. However, both contain so many mistakes in the solo part that there is still uncertainty about the correct musical text in many passages to this day. The double bass player Tobias Glöckler has therefore prepared his Urtext edition using several sources: as well as the manuscript performance material and the piano reductions published during the composer's lifetime, he has also studied recordings with Koussevitzky as soloist - thereby finally producing a thoroughly-researchedUrtext edition of the orchestral score and piano reduction of this classic of the double bass literature. As with all double bass concertos published by Henle Publishers, this edition also contains the piano reduction by Christoph Sobanski in two keys (E minor and F sharp minor) for performance with solo or orchestral tuning.

First published and recorded in 1954 (only included at the time on the album "A Leroy Anderson Pops' Concert"), this lovely piano instrumental was released as a UK single in 1957 and hit the charts in early summer. Decca then issued the track on 45 in the U.S. which enjoyed a moderate success. Anderson later recorded stereo version of Forgotten Dreams in 1959. The composition features a haunting, romantic melody and its performance is within the reach of most late-intermediate pianists. Written in D major, it contains expressive tempo variations, an animated B section, and arpeggiated chords which require a bit of stretching. Instrumentation: Piano Solo: 2.2.2.2: Saxes(AAT, opt): 4.3.3.0: Bells: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set).

The European Hymn is the hymn not only of the European Union but of Europe in a broader sense. The melody has been taken from the Ninth Symphony by Ludwig van Beethoven from 1823.In the last movement of this symphony Beethoven set music to the 'Ode to Joy' by Friedrich von Schiller from 1785. This poem sprang from Schiller's idealistic vision of men who become brothers - a vision Beethoven shared with him.In 1972 the Council of Europe adopted Beethoven's 'Ode to Joy' as its anthem. The well-known conductor Herbert von Karajan was commissioned to arrange three instrumental versions - for solo piano, wind orchestra and symphony orchestra. Without words, in the universal language of music, the anthem is an expression of the idealistic values of freedom, peace and solidarity which Europe stands for.In 1985 the heads of state and government adopted the hymn as the EU's official anthem. It does not replace the national anthems of the member states, but rather celebrates common values as well as unity in diversity. The score of this offical anthem is exclusively available from the Schott publishing house.(1 Piccolo-Flote, 2 Floten, 2 Oboen, 2 Fagotte, 1 Kontrafagott, 1 Klarinette in Es, 3 Klarinetten in B, 1 Bass-Klarinette in B, 2 Alt-Saxophone in Es, 1 Tenor-Saxophon in B, 1 Bariton-Saxophon in Es, 3 Trompeten in B, 2 Kornette in B, 2 Horner in F, 3 Posaunen, 2 Flugelhorner in B, 3 Tenorhorner in B, 1 Bariton, 2 Tuben, Pauken, Kontrabass).
