Certainly Robert Schumann was right when he stated soon after Beethoven's death that the latter's conception of the symphony as a great, universal confessional work was hardly to be continued by the next generation of composers. He saw a solution to the dilemma in the creation of autonomous concert overtures, such as those written, for instance, by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy: Four of his overtures were printed during his lifetime, and others were extant in manuscript, though frequently and successfully performed by the composer. Belonging to the latter group is the Trumpet Overture, begun in 1825 and performed three times between 1828 und 1833 on prominent occasions in Berlin, Dusseldorf, and London.First printing posthumously 1851 (Rietz).

“'Kalaviuka' is an incarnated figure of the Buddha, the head of which looks human and the lower half like a bird with wings. In my work I would like to express the unity of man and nature, a conception deeply rooted in traditional Chinese art and culture, with a modern awareness. The musical material derives from traditional Chinese instrumental works which have birds as their subjects. In particular, these are passages (neither sung nor melodic) that imitate birdsong or depict the forms of birds by means of various instruments. These musical sections mostly consist of a combination of specially selected musical instruments with special techniques of sound production. My aim in composing this piece was to find out how these sounds could be transferred into an orchestra in order to develop a new musical vocabulary and new means of expression.†(Guoping Jia) The work was commissioned by Munich Biennale 2012 and Ernst von Siemens Musikstiftung.

The present edition is based on all relevant sources. The preface sketches the work's genesis from the moment of its conception in Rome in late December 1879 (Yesterday, out in the streets, I heard a wonderful folksong that I will most certainly make use of.) to the first reviews, in which Tchaikovsky was accused of triviality and of having made an extremely unfortunate choice of themes. Yet this did nothing to hamper the worldwide success of the work, and Tchaikovsky's composer colleagues also culled ideas from it: a few years later, Tchaikovsky himself was the dedicatee of Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov's Capriccio espagnol. Composer's Note Once, we had a joint conception to create a concert telling a life story. The premiere was planned to take place on the Acropolis in Athens. It was intended to be a large event, a hybrid of a mystery play and an opera. Krzysztof Kieslowski would be the director, Krzysztof Piesiewicz was responsible for the script, and I was planning to compose the music. We thought it might be the first of a series of musical performances, to be developed in various interesting places around the world in the next few years. But it was life that authored a different ending: Krzysztof Kieslowski died in March of 1996. The first part of Requiem for My Friend is meant as a farewell to Krzysztof Kieslowski. I dedicate this music to him. Zbigniew Preisner.

In 1998, at the end of the 20th century, Breitkopf & Hartel started the publication of the Complete Edition, which is made possible thanks to the cooperation of the various Sibelius publishers. The Editors (Helsinki University Library and The Sibelius Society of Finland) and the Editorial Committee (Chairman: Timo Virtanen, Helsinki) believe that the volumes of JSW will provide the basis for a now conception of the creative work of Jean Sibelius.Reviews: One immediately recognizes the towering production quality of these volumes - a point that can be extended to all volumes thus far published in the set. The music is a joy to read; and the lucidity and thoroughness of the texts … are models of scholarly editions, and should be required reading for all bibliography and music-editing courses. … In sum, the JSW is a remarkable project: the scholarship is impeccable, the music scores and texts are simply a joy to study. Edward Jurkowski, Notes December 2011: 442-443At the back of this magnificent book are pages of critical commentary on a bar-by-bar analysis of an endless supply of musical notation requiring interpretation by the editor. … For the general, non-musically trained, purchaser of the edition there is the magisterial introduction to read, and fascinating reading it is. Edward W. Clark, Sibelius Society Newsletter 2009 The Sibelius pieces, however, are a revelation. I opened this magnificently produced volume - complete with multilingual critical report and generous facsimiles of original manuscripts - expecting Grieg-style quasi-nationalistic character pieces, and was instead presented with an incredible array of styles, textures, harmonic languages and levels of difficulty. Chris White, Piano Professional Summer 2009: 2This is not only a scholarly edition of one of the composer's major works, it is also a model for the philological editing of music in general. … JSW has chosen to have the emendations reflected in two places, in certain cases even in three: as graphic indications in the music text, in prose form in the critical commentary, and sometimes also in the form of a warning footnote on the music page. There can be no doubt that such a procedure is very user-friendly, but it disturbs the appearance of the music and may mislead the user into thinking that there are two or more equally valid readings. Niels Krabbe, Fontes Artis Musicae 54/2, 2007: 248 Editorial standards are high throughout, and maintain a careful balance between the competing demands of practical exigency and the need to provide as much scholarly evidence of variants as possible. The critical commentaries provide concise and effective descriptions of the sources and, where appropriate, information on compositional genesis and historical context. The introduction to each volume provide useful background information on historical reception, including much new material not previously brought to light in Tawaststjerna's biography. Daniel M. Grimley, Nineteenth-Century Music Review 2/2, 2005: 244.

Wonderful for teaching Baroque style and bowing concepts, this piece features limited third position for the violins, cellos, and basses. Violas share in the thematic materials with string basses, mostly sharing the basso continuo line with cellos. This movement from Telemann's Sonata in A for String Quartet has been perfectly set by Robert Sieving. (3:20).

An excellent example of Baroque literature in a non-contrapuntal style, the parts in this setting are technically simple, thereby allowing directors ample time to work on concepts of musicality and interpretation during rehearsals. In his score notes, John also explains that in Handel's day this piece was typically played three times-- strings alone, winds alone, then strings and winds together-- and gives specific suggestions for directors interested in supplementing this edition with wind parts. An optional piano part is provided with each standard string set.

Based on one of the most famous themes in classical literature, this arrangement by Andrew Dabczynski captures the essence of the Trout Quintet. This music will fall under the fingers of the entire orchestra, with solos for all and special features for the basses! It provides an excellent opportunity to learn many important techniques and concepts, and is a perfect selection for introducing Shubert's glorious melodies to students and audiences alike. (3:05).

Written to help students understand the concept of positions, this entire piece can be played by the violins, violas, and cellos in 3rd position with no shifting! Playing in positions is often a challenging hurdle for many young musicians yet an important prerequisite for advanced techniques. The rhythms are kept very simple so students can focus on playing in a new way. With a dark, mature sound and named after an ancient Roman border river, this piece allows plenty of room for expression. To cross the Rubicon is to pass a point of no return and enter into a new realm. This work is both a valuable teaching tool for a new musical adventure and a thrilling concert piece that students will be excited to show off in concert. (1:45).
