These 8 elegant part-books helped to establish Vivaldi's reputation throughout Europe and provided the rules from which such writers as Quantz, Marcello and Mattheson judged and advised other composers. Russian composer, Alexander Glazounov (1865-1936) was director of the Saint Petersburg Conservatory for a large part of his career. As a prolific composer, his works were always well-received, Concerto in E-flat for Alto Saxophone and String Orchestra being no exception. Glazounov's compositional style was particularly significant due to his successful reconciliation of nationalism and cosmopolitanism in Russian music. Composed in 1934, a typical performance of Concerto in E-flat for Alto Saxophone and String Orchestra last about fourteen minutes and is played without a pause. The work is highly romantic and remains part of the standard Saxophone repertoire. The Cello Concerto is in four main sections that are played without a break. As with most of my work, the music throughout is generated from the ideas presented in the fi rst few bars, and these ideas and their variants appear freely in the different sections. Recurring material and references to earlier sections are used deliberately to create not only a sense of unity but also an impression of familiarity that aspires to induce a dream-like perception of the passing music, a kind of spiral. The piece opens with a slow introduction that gradually quickens into the first main section, an allegro. The form of the second section, which is in a lighter mood, is based on an early 13th century verse form, the Sestina, which consists of six stanzas of sixlines each, followed by an envoi. The words that end each line in the first stanza are rotated in a strictly prescribed pattern* to give the line-endings of the remaining stanzas; in this adaptation, each line consists of four bars, and the repetitions ensue according to the plan. The intricate repetition inherent in this form can also be seen as a form of spiral. The third section is an extended slow movement interrupted by a quicker episode that refers to the fi rst section. Generally lighter and in a similar vein to the second section, the final section includes a reference to the slow movement before returning to the lighter music that ends the piece. Written by Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921) in 1869, the Piano Concerto No. 3 in E-flat Major, Op. 29 follows the standard concerto form while experimenting with harmony. Premiered on November 27th, 1869, by Saint-Saëns himself at the Leipzig Gewandhaus, the work was not particularly well received at the time. Today, while not as popular as Saint-Saëns' second, fourth, or fifth concertos, the third, with its balance between delicate lyricism and virtuosity, remains an important addition to the piano concerto repertoire. F.A. Rosler (Antonio Rosetti), a Bohemian by birth, worked as court music director in Ludwigslust/Mecklenburg. He wrote 14 flute concertos altogether the most important of which is the concerto G major, Op. 14. The expanded head movement combines the sonata form with the ritornello technique of the concerto grosso. Right at the beginning, the basses of the Mannheimer-Walzermotiv make it clear that Rosler knows how to use effectively the orchestral technique of his time. Despite all motivic and thematic as well as harmonic abundance, -Rosler achieves in this concerto an almost natural musical unity.

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) completed his Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor in 1803, not long after writing the famous letter to his brothers, the Heiligenstadt Testament, in which he lamented his increasing deafness. He gave the first performance of the piece, as soloist, on April 5 in a public benefit concert at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna. The opening melody in the first movement bears striking similarity to the first theme heard in Mozart's 24th piano concerto. As a whole, the piece provides an essential link between the Mozartean charm of the two earlier concertos and the more idiosyncratic work found in his middle period.
