Far from Home is originally for solo cello based on my exploration of the use of Western instrumental and compositional techniques to express the emotional and cultural characteristics of Thai traditional music. This piece contains both lyrical and virtuosic passages that derived from the traditional Thai fiddle playing and Krao-nai style, which is considered to be among the most demanding styles for solo instruments. Although the musical expression and techniques used in this piece are somewhat different from the traditional Krao-nai style, it still convey the emotions and cultural references of that style. Far from Home was graciously commissioned by the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra with the generous support of Dr. Sugree Charoensook. It was given its first performance by Thai cellist Tapalin Charoensook, the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra, and Maestro Alfonso Scarano conducting, on August 22-23, 2014, at Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand.Far from Home is originally for solo cello based on my exploration of the use of Western instrumental and compositional techniques to express the emotional and cultural characteristics of Thai traditional music. New edition, with preface by Gerard McBurney. The work was composed in 1933-38 for one of the greatest cellists of the 20th century, Gregor Piatigorsky. McBurney explains that, somehow this concerto had come to seem jinxed to the composer. And when, in 1947, he heard it in Moscow once again, this time played by the young Mstislav Rostropovich, he decided to recast it (albeit using much of the same material) as an entirely new piece, the Sinfonia Concertante, op 125. The earlier version never entirely disappeared, however, with a scattering of cellists always preferring it to the later one. And in recent years, it has found new favor and new champions, its spectacularly difficult cello writing and virtuosic orchestral effects offering a brilliance, pungency and fascination all of their own..

Hartke's cello concerto, Da Pacem, takes its title from a Latin hymn that begins “Grant peace in our day.” It is a reflection on these unsettled and unsettling times. As the work's protagonist, the solo cellist journeys through a considerable variety of musical landscapes. Movements: I. Da Pacem (Fantasia) II. In diebus nostris (Scherzo) III. Quis pugnat pro nobis? This lovely German song offers the opportunity to teach compound meter, isolating excerpts collaterally with rhythmic exercises, and working on smooth string crossings. Extended positions are featured in the cello part with accidentals sprinkled throughout the other parts as well. A beautiful soli section will be popular with cellists against a moving bass line.

Composed for Steven Isserlis in 2004, Carl Vine's Concerto for Cello is an exhilarating 20-minute work that traverses a vast emotional palette. The concerto begins arrestingly, with soloist pitted against orchestra, though as it develops the two factions move towards union. A slow chorale led by the cellist frames the central section, whilst relentless motor rhythms drive the work to its close.

Édouard Lalo (1823-1892) wrote Concerto for Cello in D minor a few years after the popular Symphonie espagnole in 1876 for Belgian cellist Adolphe Fischer. The following year, Fischer was the soloist for the premiere at the Cirque d'Hiver on December 9, 1877. Influenced by his Symphonie espagnole, this concerto evokes a Spanish atmosphere. At the time of its premiere, there were few serious cello concerti, leading Lalo's Concerto to serve as a catalyst for the cello to be considered a more soloistic instrument. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 4.2.3.0: Timp: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set): Solo Vc in set.

Like his subsequent non-certo For Marcos Balter – also composed during the upheavals, political and otherwise, of the year 2020 – Tyshawn Sorey's For Roscoe Mitchell for cello and orchestra is a single-movement work that imagines a non-adversarial, non-hierarchical relationship between the soloist and the ensemble. The 20-minute piece is named in admiration of Sorey's friend and collaborator Roscoe Mitchell, the Chicago-based bandleader, composer, educator, and performer. Cellist Seth Parker Woods gave the world premiere in November 2020 alongside conductor David Robertson and the Seattle Symphony, who commissioned the piece.

Mozart's Early Quartet collection is recognized as a crown of string chamber music. This accessible arrangement, from an arranger recognized for his careful and creative adaptations, is very true to the original. An interesting bass part has been added, and the more taxing rhythms, accidentals and embellishments have been simplified. Playable by younger players, yet advanced students also will find this piece delightfully satisfying---even challenging---when played at a faster tempo. Here's a centerpiece for any string orchestra concert program! Correlates with String Explorer Book One, unit 13. This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

Chamber music by Jean Sibelius - a welcome addition to the chamber music repertoire for strings with piano.
ISBN 9790004803233. 9 x 12 inches.
This volume presents partly less known, but undoubtedly interesting and highly welcome additions to the chamber music repertoire for violinists and cellists in the reliable Urtext of the Complete Edition. The violin was Sibelius's instrument. He was active as a violinist mainly during his studies at the Helsinki Music Institute from 1885-1889 and for a short time thereafter. The present volume contains Jean Sibelius's opus-numbered works for violin or cello and piano, 36 compositions in total. Most of the works of this volume were created at the beginning of the 20th century and remained unpublished until the early 1920s. Sibelius composed far less music for the cello than for the violin. Malinconia (Op. 20), published in 1911, remained his only opus-numbered work exclusively for cello and piano. This volume also includes Two Pieces (Op. 77) and Four Pieces (Op. 78) as versions for violin with piano and for cello with piano.Chamber music by Jean Sibelius - a welcome addition to the chamber music repertoire for strings with piano.
