Symphony No. 8 for Orchestra (2011) by Per Norgard. Premiered on September 19, 2013 by the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra and John Storgards. Programme note: The first movement opens with sculptural rising and falling scales. Visually the sound may call to mind, say, spirals or ziggurats (temple towers). Brisk music leads to the climax of the movement. The second movement is slow and sensually melodious and has three interludes of greater timbral melodic action. The third movement begins very restlessly but towards the climax the tempo gradually begins to accelerate. An oscillating pianissimomurmur ends the movement - and the symphony. Symphony no. 8 is commissioned by Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra and is besides the Orchestra dedicated to the conductor John Storgards. Per Norgard (2012).

John Corigliano (b. 1938) is an American composer. One of his most enjoyable compositions is The Mannheim Rocket, commissioned by the Mannheim orchestra in the year 2000. It takes inspiration from theRocket of the title – a famous compositional device invented by the orchestra in the 1700s. From there it swiftly traverses 200 years of German music, cleverly hiding quotes from some of the most famous orchestralworks of the era, rising to its zenith before falling back to earth – exactly as a real rocket would.
Described by the composer as a “marvellous journey”, this orchestral piece is one of the mostentertaining in the repertoire – both to play and to listen to.

Commissioned by the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, the opening ideas of this short but lively work call the listener to attention as they build to release a rushing-away line. The elements of this opening—three repeated notes, the falling bass-line and the scurrying string figures—provide the material from which the rest of the piece grows. The strong contrasts of the opening, however, continue throughout the movement, with frequent surprises as textures and surface rhythms change—sometimes surging forward, sometimes held back. But behind this is the steady one-in-a-bar beat of the classical scherzo, providing a background rhythmic continuity to tie the surface contrasts together.
