Tyshawn Sorey describes his piece For Marcos Balter for violin and orchestra as a non-certo, a single-movement work that rejects the conventionally heroic and virtuosic role of the concerto soloist in favor of a more continuous, yet less dominant presence alongside the ensemble. A tribute to the Sorey's friend and colleague Marcos Balter, the US-based Brazilian composer, the 38-minute piece was commissioned jointly by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra with assistance from the ARCO Collaborative. For Marcos Balter received its world premiere from the Detroit Symphony and soloist Jennifer Koh in November 2020, with Xian Zhang conducting.

For Olly Woodrow Wilson, Jr. in memoriam for large mixed ensemble was composed by Tyshawn Sorey on a co-commission from the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players and from Radio France and Ensemble Intercontemporain. Ensemble Intercontemporain recorded the world premiere performance, conducted by Elena Schwarz at the Maison de la Radio et de la Musique, Paris, on February 7, 2021 for a broadcast that March.

Olly Wilson's influence is heard not in the style of the piece, which unfolds slowly and contemplatively over the course of a single 20-minute movement, but in the use of pitch materials borrowed from a pair of Wilson compositions of special importance to Sorey: Akwan and Piece for Four.

Like his subsequent non-certo For Marcos Balter – also composed during the upheavals, political and otherwise, of the year 2020 – Tyshawn Sorey's For Roscoe Mitchell for cello and orchestra is a single-movement work that imagines a non-adversarial, non-hierarchical relationship between the soloist and the ensemble. The 20-minute piece is named in admiration of Sorey's friend and collaborator Roscoe Mitchell, the Chicago-based bandleader, composer, educator, and performer. Cellist Seth Parker Woods gave the world premiere in November 2020 alongside conductor David Robertson and the Seattle Symphony, who commissioned the piece.

Spencer Barefield was commissioned by the Louisville Orchestra for a world premiere on March 9, 2019, with Teddy Abrams conducting. Ansyn Banks and Craig Wagner premiered the solo parts for trumpet and guitar, which nod toward the pair of experimental jazz musicians who inspired this contemplative, 11-minute work: A.
