Moeran based Lonely Waters on the fragment of a song from the Broads of East Norfolk. This flowing, atmospheric work is dedicated to Ralph Vaughn Williams, and recalls Moeran's Norfolk boyhood and the folksongs he collected from East Anglia.E J Moeran was a 20th century British composer of Anglo-Irish background who spent his early years in Norfolk. Influences of folksong and programmatic elements can be easily heard in this composer's main body of work. Moeran tended toward the smaller ensembles in his composition which gave an appropriate frame for his great lyric gifts.

Program notes: “None But the Lonely Heart” is a song from Tchaikovsky's Six Romances, Op. 6 for voice and piano. The song is a setting in Russian translation of Goethe's poem “Nur wer die Sehnsucht kennt,” which has attracted many composers, most famously Franz Schubert. This is my second orchestration of music by Tchaikovsky, the first being Andante Cantabile from his String Quartet No. 1. I tried to make these transcriptions sound as if they had been orchestrated by the composer himself – as is also the case with my transcriptions of music by Rachmaninoff, Janácek, Bizet, and Revueltas. This is my natural tendency, following the spirit of the music. –José Serebrier.

'Acquainted with Night', is a cycle of six songs, for alto and strings, harp and timpani. The texts are all concerned with different aspects of night. The first song, 'Lullaby' to a poem by Beaumont and Fletcher, seeks to evoke the 'care-charming' powers of sleep. The second, a setting of Robert Frost's 'Acquainted with the night', is concerned with the lonely world of a strange city at night and the music is characterised by an insistently repeated figure in the accompaniment. The third song contrasts the calmness of the night with the turbulence in a lover's mind - the poem is by the Earl of Surrey. 'Out in the dark' a poem by Edward Thomas, is the text of the fourth song. It is in the form of a scherzo and deals with the mystery and strangeness of night, and, as the poet puts it, the 'might' of night. It is, as the poet says, a hymn to night and the chordal nature of the accompaniment suggests this quality. This song leads directly into the last, which is in fact a reprise of the opening 'Lullaby' so completing the cycle.
