Mozart composed two new symphonies in the Autumn of 1773, after having returned to Salzburg from Vienna. The first of the two was the Symphony No.24 In B Flat K.182, and the second was the Symphony No.25 in G Minor K.183

This symphony was one of two which Mozart composed in a minor key ? the other being the Symphony No.40 in G Minor K.550. The latter can be identified with some of Mozart?s most troubled and agitated music, reflecting those difficult moments in his life. However, the twenty-fifth symphony is thought to have been composed as part of a sudden wave of minor-key symphonies which appeared in the later 1760s and early 1770s ? among others were composed by Vanhal, Ordonez, and Joseph Haydn.Available here is the study score for one of Mozart?s two symphonies composed in a minor key, the Symphony No.25 in G Minor K.183. This score is ideal for study and perusal usage..

Young string players do not get the opportunity to play Brahms often because much of his greatest music is written for piano and other works are too complex. But embedded in the fiery Rhapsody In B Minor (Op. 79, No. 1) is a beautiful interlude which takes on a form of its own. Simple melodies are passed among all instruments and harmonized in parallel 3rds and 6ths. Simple repeated 8th-note patterns with some ties create the undulating current in the accompaniment which drives the piece to its dynamic extremes. Duration 3:00. Available in SmartMusic.

From Book I of Bach's The Well-Tempered Klavier, this lively reworking of the Prelude and Fugue in B-flat minor, No. 22 provides students the wonderful experience of playing Baroque counterpoint in a minor key. Though rhythms are not complex, counting skills will be honed. The piece remains mainly in first position, yet also includes melodic augmented seconds. In the five-part fugue, the double basses have their own independent line, so let them shine.

,,… the musical text is fine. This is a valuable improvement. (Clifford Bartlett, Early Music Review)
ISBN 9790004213766. 6.5 x 9 inches.
With the new edition of the G-minor Symphony, a vital work group in Mozart's oeuvre is now complete: the three late symphonies K. 543, 550 and 551, now available in Urtext editions. As in his new edition of the Hafner Symphony, Henrik Wiese uncovers in the present Breitkopf Urtext score three different stages in the genesis of the G-minor Symphony. Mozart initially wrote the work without clarinets (1st stage), and then he added the clarinets (2nd stage). Not until a final stage did he change the wind instrumentation in the Andante (3rd stage). Mozart thus returned to the 1st version again after completing the 2nd version (with clarinets). This advances the importance of the 1st version without clarinets as Fassung letzter Hand. A compelling insight which sheds new light on the famous G-minor Symphony. Both versions are of equal value and can now be compared with one another, studied and, above all, performed for the first time ever thanks to the new score and parts.Another extremly practical aspect that should be noted: the orchestral parts offer solutions for all the problematic page turns for the first time ever (please see the sample pages of OB 5542 - Violin II.),,... the musical text is fine. This is a valuable improvement. (Clifford Bartlett, Early Music Review)3 Work Stages, 2 Versions, 1 Edition.

Joseph Haydn's so-called Paris Symphonies were composed in 1785 and 1786 for the masonic lodge “Société Olympique†in Paris, which ran a large orchestra and organised regular concerts. These six works are notable for their artful motivic work and playful wit. Haydn here pays tribute both to the discerning taste of the Paris audience and to the excellent abilities of the musicians in the orchestra. These symphonies rapidly became famous and popular throughout Europe, thanks to editions published variously in Paris, Vienna and London. The Symphony no. 83 is the only Paris Symphony in a minor key. Its nickname “La Poule†(“The henâ€) was not coinedby Haydn. But it's almost impossible not to be reminded of the bird when listening to the oboe's “cluckings†in the second theme of the first movement. This study edition reproduces the musical text of the Haydn Complete Edition, which is a guarantor of the finestscholarship. An informative preface and a brief critical report make this handy score an ideal companion for all Haydn fans, both present and future.

Richard Strauss (1864-1949) wrote his VIOLIN CONCERTO IN D MINOR, Op. 8, between 1881 and 1882, and it remained his only foray in that genre. Composed while a teenager and still in school. While still very much a product of the Romantic era tradition, the work is not considered as distinctive as the works he would produce only a few years later, and Strauss himself later ridiculed the work. Still, with inventive and bold writing in the solo and hints of his mature harmonic style to come, there is much to enjoy in the work, including its warmth, youthful sincerity, and lyrical expression, so that it should not be dismissed as mere juvenilia, either by contemporary audiences or Strauss himself. The chamber version of the concerto was first performed in Vienna on December 5, 1882, with the dedicatee Benno Walter on the violin while Strauss played his own piano reduction. The premiere for the orchestral version would take place seven years later in Cologne on March 4, 1890, with Walter again performing the solo with an orchestra conducted by Franz Wüllner. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 4.2.0.0: Timp: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set): Solo Violin.

Piano concertos combine two elements: pure playing and full poetic expression. Virtuosity and romance. Pianistic brilliance, educated in the works in the stile brillant, brought to perfection, but at the same time - a farewell. Both are forms of direct expression of the personality of the composer, which showed itself in them for the first time with so much strength and is manifested in a group of characteristics of forming Chopin's individual style. Piano Concerto in F minor In terms of size, substantially smaller than the E minor concerto and also a different kind of expression: more lyrical, drawn in delicate pastel colours. Especially famous is the second movement, the Larghetto, which Chopin wrote under the inspiration of his first love. Critical source-edition edited by Jan Ekier and Pawel Kaminski based on manuscripts, copies approved by Chopin himself, and first editions. Its purpose is to present the works of Chopin in authentic form.

Along with Symphonies Nos. 79 and 81, Haydn’s D-minor Symphony Hob. I:80 belongs to a set of symphonies that he completed in late 1784. He wrote them for his employer Prince Nikolaus Esterházy, his task being to entertain the prince with new music. The symphonies had to be suitable for the twenty-five to thirty musicians who were in the prince’s orchestra. Continuing the cooperation between Bärenreiter and the G. Henle publishing company regarding Haydn’s large choral works, operas and symphonies, this edition is based on the G. Henle Complete Edition of the “Works of Joseph Haydnâ€.Bärenreiter has already published the complete performance material for several “Sturm und Drang†symphonies and all the London and Paris symphonies.

Though not as popular as his famous 8th and 9th symphonies, Dvorák's Symphony No. 7 in D minor is a masterpiece worthy of serious study and performance. The scherzo movement has been abridged and simplified from 6/4 to 6/8 for playability, but the spirit of Dvorák comes through clearly. Full of the composer's trademark hemiola, this arrangement by Todd Parrish gives melody and countermelodies to all parts and ends with an exciting, powerful conclusion. The optional timpani part gives even more strength to your performance. This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

Édouard Lalo (1823-1892) wrote Concerto for Cello in D minor a few years after the popular Symphonie espagnole in 1876 for Belgian cellist Adolphe Fischer. The following year, Fischer was the soloist for the premiere at the Cirque d'Hiver on December 9, 1877. Influenced by his Symphonie espagnole, this concerto evokes a Spanish atmosphere. At the time of its premiere, there were few serious cello concerti, leading Lalo's Concerto to serve as a catalyst for the cello to be considered a more soloistic instrument. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 4.2.3.0: Timp: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set): Solo Vc in set.

The heroic second movement of Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op. 67 is a theme and variations. In this arrangement by Michael Hopkins the original key of A-flat major has been changed to C major, and the original time signature of 3/8 has been changed to 3/4 meter. Beethoven's original dynamic markings and harmonies have been preserved. This movement is an excellent piece for teaching legato, hooked, martelé, and spiccato bowings; bow distribution; dynamic contrast; and phrasing. Your students will enjoy playing this accessible arrangement of one of the great masterpieces of the classical era.

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) completed his Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor in 1803, not long after writing the famous letter to his brothers, the Heiligenstadt Testament, in which he lamented his increasing deafness. He gave the first performance of the piece, as soloist, on April 5 in a public benefit concert at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna. The opening melody in the first movement bears striking similarity to the first theme heard in Mozart's 24th piano concerto. As a whole, the piece provides an essential link between the Mozartean charm of the two earlier concertos and the more idiosyncratic work found in his middle period. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 2.2.0.0: Timp: Str (4-4-3-3-3 in set): Solo Piano.

Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) wrote his Violin Concerto in E minor over a six-year period from 1838 to 1844 for his childhood friend, the violinist Ferdinand David, who contributed the cadenza in the version of the concerto most performed today. The concerto premiered on March 13, 1845 in Leipzig, but Mendelssohn himself was unable to conduct due to illness. Unlike most concerti of the time, Mendelssohn has the violin enter immediately without any orchestral introduction, and its cadenza is unusually placed after the development of the first movement instead of at the end of the movement. The concerto remains one of the most ubiquitous pieces in the violin repertoire. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 2.2.0.0: Timp: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set): Solo Vn in set.
