“Composed in 1978 by Henri Dutilleux, Timbres, Space, Movement is a work for Orchestra, also named ?The starry night? after a painting by Van Gogh. It was commisioned by Mstislav Rostropovich for the National Symphony Orchestra of Washington and is dedicated to Charles Münch. This great orchestral work lasts approximately 20 minutes and depicts the content of the painting. It is written for a full orchestra without Violins or Violas. A sketch of the placement of the instruments is given in the book as its disposition differs from a full orchestra: The Cellos placed in a half-circle in front of the conductor. The Cellos represents the space with twirling solos and more stagnant sections while the lack of Violins and Violas is for the quiet and motionless part of the painting. The solo of the Winds and Drums characterizes the clouds and the light of the moon and the stars. It is divided in two parts: 1. Nébuleuse (Nebula) and 2.Constellations, which are divided by a Cello interlude. Henri Dutilleux was internationally acclaimed for his work winning prizes such as the Gold Medal of the Royal Philharmonic Society and the UNESCO's International Rostrum of Composers, amongst many others. His work also includes a Piano sonata, two symphonies, the Violin concerto 'L'arbre des songes' (The tree of dreams) and the Cello concerto 'Tout un monde lointain' (A whole distant word).â€.

The Symphony No. 1 (originally in five movements) was first performed in Budapest in 1889, but the premiere as well as two further performances in Hamburg and Weimar turned out to be a fiasco. After 1894 Mahler removed the Blumine-movement. Until the last performance under his direction in New York in 1909, Mahler made revisions again and again. This edition strives to present a, for the performance practice, reliable music text of the final extant version that in 1910 Mahler corrected and deemed accurate for the new print. The Editorial Report gives detailed information on the provenance and evaluation of the sources as well as authentic annotations on performance practice. Individual comments document editorial interventions and deviations from current editions. The cloth-bound volume PB 5661 contains next to the final version of the four-movement Symphony, the Blumine movement. I wrote my First Symphony while studying in the United States in 1955, but the work has since undergone two substantial changes. The original four-movement structure changed into a two-movement structure in 1988, with an expansive, Romantic and pathos-laden principal movement followed by a grotesque and ironic scherzo. This version seems to owe something to Dmitri Shostakovich, one of the idols of 1950s Modernism in Finland. Later I found that the structure was out of balance, and in 2003 I added a lyrical slow movement (Poetico) between the two existing ones. In order to preserve the 1950s spirit of the original work, I based the slow movement on solo song written around the same time (third movement from the song cycle Die Liebenden).

The two string quartets by Camille Saint-Saens appear here in one volume for the first time. The String Quartet No. 1 in E Minor op. 112 (1899) numbers among the composer's most successful pieces and is emblematic of the genre in the French repertoire. Here Saint-Saens displays his fully developed mastery and presents the wealth of his inspiration and musical prowess. Only three years before his death, he surprisingly composed the String Quartet No. 2 in G major op. 153 (1918) which, with its classicistic stance, represents a homage to the masters of the late eighteenth century Viennese School. In addition to the first critical edition of the two string quartets, this second volume of theOeuvres instrumentales completesde Camille Saint-Saens includes the first version of the final movementInterlude et Finalfrom the second string quartet, the fragmentary beginning of an early work for string quartet as well as the previously unknown and unpublished Adagio from Symphony No. 2 in A Minor op. 55 for string quintet. An extensive Introduction (Fr/Eng/Ger) illuminates the genesis, historical performance and reception histories of all these pieces; the Critical Report (Fr) provides information about all the sources and their variants.

Morton Gould, equally comfortable in the worlds of both serious and light music, presented his symphonettes (an Americanization of the term sinfonietta, much like kitchenette and dinette) as works of a truly American vernacular, drawing on popular culture as well as classical forms. His American Symphonette No. 2 was the work that first made Gould a name among the American public through radio, with the second movement (Pavanne) a pop orchestra standard to this day. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 4Sax(opt.; AATB; all dCl): 2.3.3.0: Perc(1): Hp(or Pno): Gtr: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set). The original condensed score is included with this set, but the full score has been extracted from the complete work and also included.

In this symphony, C.Ph.E. Bach appears as pioneer of the Viennese Classicism. Just in the first movement, we encounter a theme of individual form, a seven-bar (!) combination of syncopated tone repetition with smallsegmented triad splitting. The fact that the material of the whole movement is won from that, is a principle which was often used in the classical period.

This grade 4 arrangement contains selected themes from the 1st Movement of Symphony No. 41, K. 551. A slow and somber Grave introduction leads to a light-hearted Allegro, presenting an ideal piece to teach sonata form to your students. The clearly marked bowings and artist-level fingerings will save precious rehearsal minutes and contribute to a professional sound. This arrangement re-scores the first movement of Sinfonia No. 9 from six voices, requiring two separate viola parts, to the traditional five-voice string orchestra. Consistent with selected professional performances of the work, the first of two recapitulations has been seamlessly omitted to create a more balanced form, eliminate redundancies akin to counterpoint exercises, and showcase the young composer's emerging creativity by emphasizing his striking use of the key of A-major before reaffirming the home key. The elimination of a repeat reduces the duration to 8:30. (11:30) This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

A commission from the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra completed in 2003 and premiered in December 2004. This is music constructed in broad arches culminating in shamanistic rhythms in the closing movement. Lasting 40 minutes, it is Vuori's biggest work and rests on two simple kernels. In his striving to develop his material he confesses to be a Sibelian symphonist.
