Russian composer, Alexander Glazounov (1865-1936) was director of the Saint Petersburg Conservatory for a large part of his career. As a prolific composer, his works were always well-received, Concerto in E-flat for Alto Saxophone and String Orchestra being no exception. Glazounov's compositional style was particularly significant due to his successful reconciliation of nationalism and cosmopolitanism in Russian music. Composed in 1934, a typical performance of Concerto in E-flat for Alto Saxophone and String Orchestra last about fourteen minutes and is played without a pause. The work is highly romantic and remains part of the standard Saxophone repertoire. For all advanced saxophonists, Glazounov's Concerto in E-flat ensures a riveting and exciting performance for players and audiences alike.

The genesis of Beethoven's 4th symphony came at an extraordinary time for the composer not only regarding productivity: Thus, in 1806 he composed, among other things, the 4th piano concerto, the three Rasumovsky string quartets op. 59, the 32 piano variations in c minor WoO 80, as well as the violin concerto op. 61. The first performance of the B-flat-major symphony occurred in March 1807 at one of the two noteworthy subscription concerts conducted by Beethoven in the Palais Lobkowitz in Vienna. In the course of time, this intellectually-stimulating work- so described by one of the reviewers of the Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung - found ever-increasing appeal. Throughout the entire 19th century this symphony ranked with the best-loved and most frequently performed works; its popularity spread to England where the London Philharmonic Society played it at least 25 times in the period between 1813 and 1850.Extant are only a few drafts of the 4th symphony. The autograph served as the main source for the present edition edited by Prof. Bathia Churgin, likewise editor of the 3rd symphony in the new Beethoven Complete Edition. Consulted as reference sources were copies of the score and orchestral parts as well as the original edition of the parts.

In this most perfect of Chopin's rondos the orchestra becomes an expressive and important partner for the piano soloist. The solo piano version is published in 00132229. The two piano reduction is published in 00132232. The National Edition of the Works of Fryderyk Chopin Published by PWM Exclusively Distributed by Hal Leonard Corporation Co-Editors Jan Ekier and Pawel Kaminski The objective of the National Edition is to present Chopin's complete output in its authentic form, based on the entire body of available sources. Sources were analyzed with up-to-date scientific and musicological methodology. The National Edition was based on sources originated from the composer, mainly autographs, copies of autographs and first editions with the composer's corrections, and pupils' copies with Chopin's annotations. In cases when original sources were lacking, the closest possible materials were used. Collecting the source materials was a laborious task which took years of effort. The characteristics of sources, the links and discrepancies between them as well as the reasons for particular editorial decisions are discussed in the Source Commentary in each volume. The Performance Commentary appended to each volume includes: the realization of ornaments, comments on pedal markings (the original markings sometimes are inadequate, due to the difference in sound between pianos used in Chopin`s times and modern pianos), suggestions as to the harmonic legato (a performance technique often used by Chopin and now forgotten). Hardcover full score. Text in Polish, German, and English. This edition of the works of Mieczyslaw Karlowicz is based on critically examined sources. It includes all his compositions. The aim of the edition is to present the composer's original text as authentically as possible. This is not an easy task. The source materials of Karlowicz's music are very diverse in nature. Apart from most of the songs, the composer prepared for printing and published in his lifetime the following: Serenade for Strings Op. 2, Prelude and Fugue Op. 5, Concerto in A major for Violin and Orchestra Op. 8, Returning Waves Op. 9 and Eternal Songs Op. 10. Being highly experienced in writing for a symphony orchestra, and knowledgeable in the modern method of instrumentation in the neoromantic style, he prepared his scores with great care. The remaining symphonic poems were not published before the composer's death; and the 'Rebirth' Symphony, the manuscript of which miraculously survived the ravages of World War II, was issued only in 1993, as part of the present Complete Works edition. During this war the autographs of the most compositions by Karlowicz, including all his symphonic poems (except for The Sorrowful Tale), were lost. The present publication, therefore, is based as a rule on the first editions, compared with extant autographs or authorized copies of the scores. The amendments of misprints or self-evident mistakes on the part of the composer are not indicated graphically in the text but referred to in the Editorial Notes.

A Programmatic Declaration of BeliefFelix Mendelssohn Bartholdy composed his Reformation Symphony for the celebrations marking the 300th anniversary of the Confessio Augustana, the Protestant declaration of faith. Owing to various and only partially explained reasons, there was no performance in 1830, the year in question; it was only two years later that the composer conducted the premiere of his work, now heavily revised, in Berlin. There was only one more performance in Mendelssohn's lifetime, this one conducted by Julius Rietz in Dusseldorf; the composer had since distanced himself from his opus.Conceived for the concert hall, the symphony formulates its theological references through the integration of various motives. This occurs in the finale, for example, in which Mendelssohn quotes the Luther chorale Ein feste Burg in the flute, from where it builds up to a triumphant principal theme. The strong extra-musical aspect must have been one of the reasons for the composer's later avoidance of this score, especially since Mendelssohn was becoming increasingly skeptical about explicitly programmatic music in the instrumental domain. Next to the Dusseldorf performance material of 1837, two scribal copies have been examined for the first time; they transmit the main stages of the version of 1830.

Tchaikovsky's Hamburg Symphony in the Urtext
ISBN 9790004213698. 6.5 x 9 inches.
Like Hamlet Overture, originating at about the same time, Tchaikovsky's 5th symphony, composed in 1888, focuses on the human existential question: To be or not to be - triumph over fate or triumph of fate? The per aspera ad astra dramaturgy underlying the symphony culminates in triumphant certainty. If Tchaikovsky was initially euphoric, then severe self-doubts befell him after he conducted the premiere in St. Petersburg. These doubts demonstrably led him to make interpretative changes for the Hamburg performance in 1889, including a cut in the finale. Only with the extremely positive response to this performance did his doubts dispel. Nevertheless, Tchaikovsky himself never again conducted the 5th symphony. It was only posthumously established in the repertoire through Arthur Nikisch's commitment. The new edition's textual criticism takes into account besides the autograph and first edition also the first edition's orchestral parts, together with the piano arrangement produced from the autograph by Sergei Taneyev. In addition to thoroughly clarifying dynamics and articulation, the source comparison also corrected many errors and solved problematical passages, such as, for instance, the trombone entry in m. 372 of the finale. Considered, moreover, for the first time has been the composer's doubts about his work and its ambiguities, frequently successfully suppressed in the history of its performance and reception. Tchaikovsky's conductor's copy is unfortunately lost, hence his alterations made for the Hamburg performance are not precisely known. They have survived only indirectly through remarks that Willem Mengelberg left to posterity, for which he could draw on Tchaikovsky's conductor's score and oral references by the composer's brother Modest. So, anyone wishing to deal seriously with the work's certainties will not be able to do so in the future without having also to deal with its uncertainties.Tchaikovsky's Hamburg Symphony in the Urtext.
