Three movements, 15:00 total. South Florida Classical Review called Setting Century ...ingeniously crafted. The score is an imaginative essay in orchestral rhythm and color. The initial section Ticking is based on a brief, repeated figure in the violins, like the machinery of a clock. Gradually larger melodic threads emerge. The piano imitates bells over long string lines in Tolling. As the winds and strings branch out to broader, more complex patterns, the overall effect is powerful. Dance-like themes give the entire orchestra a good workout in Streaming. An extended episode for winds exploits the individual instruments’ timbres in striking fashion. ~ Lawrence Budmen. 2(1) 22 2(1); 4231; timp, 2 perc, pno; stgs Duration: 15' Composed: 2004/16 Published by: Distributed Composer Performance materials available on rental only:.

This publication presents under one cover various short works for sundry orchestral scorings. Larghetto for Orchestra is MacMillan's orchestration (2017) of his celebrated Miserere for a cappella mixed choir (2009), a setting in Latin of Psalm 51, 'Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy great mercy', the penitential text famously set in the 17th century by Gregorio Allegri. The Larghetto orchestration was commissioned by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in celebration of Manfred Honeck's 10th Anniversary as Music Director. Memoire imperiale is one of a number of variations on General John Reids march tune Old Gaul commissioned from Scottish composers to mark the centenary in 1994 of the Faculty of Music at Edinburgh University. The Faculty was established following a bequest by General Reid (1721-1807), a former law student at the University and a renowned flute player and composer of marches for the BritishArmy, and he asked that an annual concert be organised at which one or more of his compositions be played. Composed in 2012 for the Britten Sinfonia, One is a monody in which a single line is passed around the instruments, painting it with different colours as it emerges and develops. Lasting only a few minutes, its singularity is maintained until blossoming in the lastfew bars. For Sonny (2011, orch 2013) and Ein Lamplein verlosch (2018, orch 2019) are short, private memorial tributes originally for string quartet and here rescored for string orchestra. Hirta was composed in 2016 as part of Deccas The Lost Songs of St Kilda project. Nearly a century ago, the last 36 residents were evacuated from the most remote part of the British Isles, St Kilda, an isolated archipelago off the beautiful and rugged western coast of Scotland. After 86 years, the music of St Kilda was rediscovered, recorded in a Scottish care home by Trevor Morrison, an elderly man who had been taught piano by an inhabitant of St Kilda. The songs were 'reimagined' for the Decca album by various.

Ravel's multi-layered homage in Breitkopf UrtextIn his homage Le Tombeau de Couperin, Ravel is less specifically interested in Couperin than in French music of the late 18th century. In his preface, editor Jean-Francois Monnard explains how Ravel paid a moving and intensely personal tribute to the events of World War I with his multi-layered work. The orchestral version goes back to the original, eponymous piano suite (1914-17). Then, in 1919, the composer selected four pieces from this source, orchestrated them with all of his grace and artistry; the result provides a charming contrast to the pseudo-Baroque musical idiom, and places the pieces in a new and effective sequence. The work quickly gained great popularity immediately after the concertant world premiere, when the three dance movements of the orchestral suite were included in a ballet production. The underpinnings of Monnard's edition are provided by the most important sources. The preface features a great deal of information on the interpretation and performance history of the work. This is the fifth major Ravel work now available in print from Breitkopf Urtext. An homage to Francois Couperin, but most notably to the French music of the late 18th century. In his multi-layered work Ravel assimilates the events of World War I in a moving and intensely personal way.

Ravel needed only two weeks of intensive concentration to orchestrate his piano suite Valses nobles et sentimentales, which was given its premiere performance in March 1911. Consisting of seven waltzes and one epilogue, the work stamped Ravel as a creative personality whose masterpiece breathed an unbelievably new kind of musicality and incredibly intensive poetry. Let us not forget that this was twelve years before La Valse, with which it shares a number of similarities. The new edition of the complete performance material in Breitkopf's Urtext series was prepared by the Ravel expert Jean-Francois Monnard.A l'exemple de Schubert - Ravel re-invents the waltz, inspired by Liszt, Chopin, Schumann and Chabrier, transforming the rhapsodic gyrations of the dance and sending it whirling into the 20th century.

It takes a historico-critical approach and seeks to document the history of the works and writings by shedding light on their transformations, thus identifying the various versions as witnesses of evolving aesthetic and historical positions. Eislers complete oeuvre (only a limited number of his works had penetrated the publics awareness up until the 1990s) first became the object of an editorial undertaking when the Eisler - Gesammelte Werke (EGW) was founded by Nathan Notowicz. It was later placed under the direction of Manfred Grabs and Eberhardt Klemm, and began issuing its publications in 1968 through the intermediary of the Deutscher Verlag fur Musik in Leipzig. However, only four volumes of music and five volumes of writings were published. The Hanns Eisler Complete Edition pursues the work begun at that time, although it has had to fundamentally revise its editorial principles. In this respect, the Hanns Eisler Complete Edition can be considered as a completely new editorial undertaking. It became necessary to reconceive the organization of the volumes and series as well as the editorial guidelines in order to adapt the standards of historico-critical editing generally applicable today to the specific and sometimes singular circumstances of Eislers works. The Critical Commentaries pertaining to the main volumes follow the music section or, whenever they are too extensive, appear in a special volume.Series I: Choral MusicSeries II: Music for Voice and Instrumental Ensemble or OrchestraSeries III: Music for Voice and PianoSeries IV: Instrumental MusicSeries V: Incidental MusicSeries VI: Film MusicSeries VII: Sketches and FragmentsSeries VIII: Arrangements of works by other composersSeries IX: Writings, Letters and InterviewsSON 501 has been awarded the German Music Edition Prize 2003.SON 502 has been awarded the German Music Edition Prize 2007.The major upheavals that transformed society and musical aesthetics during the first half of the 20th century also profoundly affected the life of Hanns Eisler, as well as his compositions and writings. The importance and scope of Eislers oeuvre are reason enough to make his works accessible to musical scholarship and practice in a comprehensive fashion. Price reduction for a subscription.

Arnold Schonberg is the central figure in the musical world of this century. His musical significance was already apparent during his life-time, but his posthumous influence has increased immensely. His work paved the way for ground-breaking changes in musical perception. This complete edition aspires to be equally indispensable for research as well as for performance. The edition is published in two series: series A in folio format contains all completed works, all piano scores prepared by the composer himself and all unfinished works suitable for performance; also fragments (large scores) which are better suited to be printed in such a format. Series B, in quarto format, contains early versions, sketches, ideas and fragments as well as genesis and a Critical Commentary.

In 1998, at the end of the 20th century, Breitkopf & Hartel started the publication of the Complete Edition, which is made possible thanks to the cooperation of the various Sibelius publishers. The Editors (Helsinki University Library and The Sibelius Society of Finland) and the Editorial Committee (Chairman: Timo Virtanen, Helsinki) believe that the volumes of JSW will provide the basis for a now conception of the creative work of Jean Sibelius.Reviews: One immediately recognizes the towering production quality of these volumes - a point that can be extended to all volumes thus far published in the set. The music is a joy to read; and the lucidity and thoroughness of the texts … are models of scholarly editions, and should be required reading for all bibliography and music-editing courses. … In sum, the JSW is a remarkable project: the scholarship is impeccable, the music scores and texts are simply a joy to study. Edward Jurkowski, Notes December 2011: 442-443At the back of this magnificent book are pages of critical commentary on a bar-by-bar analysis of an endless supply of musical notation requiring interpretation by the editor. … For the general, non-musically trained, purchaser of the edition there is the magisterial introduction to read, and fascinating reading it is. Edward W. Clark, Sibelius Society Newsletter 2009 The Sibelius pieces, however, are a revelation. I opened this magnificently produced volume - complete with multilingual critical report and generous facsimiles of original manuscripts - expecting Grieg-style quasi-nationalistic character pieces, and was instead presented with an incredible array of styles, textures, harmonic languages and levels of difficulty. Chris White, Piano Professional Summer 2009: 2This is not only a scholarly edition of one of the composer's major works, it is also a model for the philological editing of music in general. … JSW has chosen to have the emendations reflected in two places, in certain cases even in three: as graphic indications in the music text, in prose form in the critical commentary, and sometimes also in the form of a warning footnote on the music page. There can be no doubt that such a procedure is very user-friendly, but it disturbs the appearance of the music and may mislead the user into thinking that there are two or more equally valid readings. Niels Krabbe, Fontes Artis Musicae 54/2, 2007: 248 Editorial standards are high throughout, and maintain a careful balance between the competing demands of practical exigency and the need to provide as much scholarly evidence of variants as possible. The critical commentaries provide concise and effective descriptions of the sources and, where appropriate, information on compositional genesis and historical context. The introduction to each volume provide useful background information on historical reception, including much new material not previously brought to light in Tawaststjerna's biography. Daniel M. Carl Vine's Concerto for Orchestra was premiered to critical acclaim by the West Australian Symphony Orchestra in October 2014. Vine describes the way the 20-minute work (like his recent piano trio The Village) evolves organically through a chain of episodes to create a web of melodies and harmonies that are related, but not identical. This network of ideas is tied together by strong lateral bonds but remains fluid and flexible, creating a series of fleeting glimpses---what Prokofiev called visions fugitives---abstract patterns glimpsed in the half-light or imagined behind clouds.

The genesis of Beethoven's 4th symphony came at an extraordinary time for the composer not only regarding productivity: Thus, in 1806 he composed, among other things, the 4th piano concerto, the three Rasumovsky string quartets op. 59, the 32 piano variations in c minor WoO 80, as well as the violin concerto op. 61. The first performance of the B-flat-major symphony occurred in March 1807 at one of the two noteworthy subscription concerts conducted by Beethoven in the Palais Lobkowitz in Vienna. In the course of time, this intellectually-stimulating work- so described by one of the reviewers of the Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung - found ever-increasing appeal. Throughout the entire 19th century this symphony ranked with the best-loved and most frequently performed works; its popularity spread to England where the London Philharmonic Society played it at least 25 times in the period between 1813 and 1850.Extant are only a few drafts of the 4th symphony. The autograph served as the main source for the present edition edited by Prof. Bathia Churgin, likewise editor of the 3rd symphony in the new Beethoven Complete Edition. Consulted as reference sources were copies of the score and orchestral parts as well as the original edition of the parts.

Laszlo Dubrovay wrote the following about Liszt and the piece now being published: +Liszt was for me the most important composer in my youth, and as a pianist I played a great number of his works. I admired him as an innovator, who enriched the technique of playing the instrument in a manner unparalleled in piano literature. Later his creative genius captivated me, as he opened up new paths for the future. His works paved the way for impressionism, expressionism, 20th-century folklorism and dodecaphonic thinking. His innovations were always material realisations of spiritual renewal. My Rapsodia ungherese follows the +Slow + Fast- single-movement formal concept of Liszt-s rhapsodies.+ Piano Score: 14633, score and orchestral material on hire.

The material of this volume consists of the dances most popular in Vienna at he beginning of the 19th century: landler, ecossaises and German dances. They were originally piano pieces, but were certainly performed on all sorts of instruments at social gatherings and in public places of entertainment. This transcription for children's orchestra of these miniature compositions is a modern continuation of the old tradition of their 'transcription'.
