This major work is an affirmation of assurance that takes us on a musical and spiritual pilgrimage through the beloved 23rd Psalm. Singers and listeners will be carried from peaceful meadows to the shadowed valleys, and from the fragile hope of faith, to life everlasting. A work of scope and substance, Psalm 23 - A Journey with the Shepherd gives directors a wonderful opportunity to program outside the seasonal box. A glorious orchestration by Michael Lawrence decorates the expressive choral writing with color and a theatrical sweep. Songs include: We Are Not Alone; The Lord Is My Shepherd; Restore My Soul; Lead Me on the Paths of Righteousness; Though I Walk through the Valley; You Comfort Me; My Cup Overflows; We Are Not Alone (reprise); Surely Goodness and Mercy. Illuminations on the Afterlife - Part 2, VII to XI is the second part of this religious orchestral piece by Olivier Messiaen composed between 1987 and 1991. This conductor edition features the movements VII to XI of the orchestra. VII. Et Dieu essuiera toute larme de leurs yeux? (And God will dry the tears from their eyes) VIII. Les etoiles et la Gloire (Stars and Glory) IX. Plusieurs oiseaux des arbres de vie (Birds from trees of life) X. Le chemin de l?Invisible (Path to the Invisible) XI. Le Christ, lumiere du Paradis (Christ, light of the Paradise) The full orchestra lasts approximately one hour and was commissioned by the New York Symphonic Orchestra. It incorporates some birdsong from Oceania and some modes of limited transposition. Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) was a French organist and composer passionate about Ornithology and one of the most important composers of his century. Inspired by Japanese music, he had a very special way of composing and his work can be identified by its complexity, its diatonic aspect, its harmony with limited transposition, its colour and its additive rhythms. He composed many works related to ornithology and birdsong, including the 'Bird Catalogue' in 7 volumes and the 'Treatise on rhythm, colour and ornithology' in 7 volumes..

Quilting, co-commissioned by the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, is my first stand alone work for orchestraand is loosely inspired by the American tradition of quilt making. I composed Quilting while living most of last year in Paris.During my time there, I thought a lot about what it means to compose symphonic music as a young American in the 21st century, when so many of the many masterworks which are programmed year in and out by orchestras across the country are European. I considered which artistic traditions defined the American 19th-century. I began to think of the American crafts-tradition of quilting as a foilto the high-art tradition of European orchestral composition. As the score for my new work began to take shape, I started thinking about the manuscript itself as an object, its vertical and horizontal planes create a kind of patterned geometry of their own. Visually the way a musical score is woven together like patchwork brought to mind quilts and the great American tradition of quilting. I imagined about how conducting an orchestra can feellike stitching a piece together, or sewing together a large number of musical ideas and musicians into a coherent and transcendent whole. Quilting was an integral part of American vernacular in the 18th and 19th centuries, the African-American quilting tradition is especially fascinating, and the quilts tell the stories of the women and communities who made them. The names of the quilt patterns themselves can have their own sense of narrative: 'jacobs ladder', 'drunkards path', 'solomon's puzzle', and (my favorite for its relevance to this piece) 'the road to California. - Bryce Dessner.

Marche fatale is an incautiously daring escapade that may annoy the fans of my compositions more than my earlier works, many of which have prevailed only after scandals at their world premieres. My Marche fatale has, though, little stylistically to do with my previous compositional path; it presents itself without restraint, if not as a regression, then still as a recourse to those empty phrases to which modern civilization still clings in its daily utility music, whereas music in the 20th and 21st centuries has long since advanced to new, unfamiliar soundscapes and expressive possibilities. The key term is banality. As creators we despise it, we try to avoid it - though we are not safe from the cheap banal even within new aesthetic achievements. Many composers have incidentally accepted the banal. Mozart wrote Ein musikalischer Spass [A Musical Jape], a deliberately amateurishly miscarried sextet. Beethoven's Bagatellen op. 119 were rejected by the publisher on the grounds that few will believe that this minor work is by the famous Beethoven. Mauricio Kagel wrote, tongue in cheek, so to speak, Marsche, um den Sieg zu verfehlen [Marches for being Unvictorious], Ligeti wrote Hungarian Rock; in his Circus Polka Stravinsky quoted and distorted the famous, all too popular Schubert military march, composed at the time for piano duet. I myself do not know, though, whether I ought to rank my Marche fatale alongside these examples: I accept the humor in daily life, the more so as this daily life for some of us is not otherwise to be borne. In music, I mistrust it, considering myself all the closer to the profounder idea of cheerfulness having little to do with humor. However: Isn't a march with its compelling claim to a collectively martial or festive mood absurd, a priori? Is it even music at all? Can one march and at the same time listen? Eventually, I resolved to take the absurd seriously - perhaps bitterly seriously - as a debunking emblem of our civilization that is standing on the brink. The way - seemingly unstoppable - into the black hole of all debilitating demons: that can become serene. My old request of myself and my music-creating surroundings is to write a non-music, whence the familiar concept of music is repeatedly re-defined anew and differently, so that derailed here - perhaps? - in a treacherous way, the concert hall becomes the place of mind-opening adventures instead of a refuge in illusory security. How could that happen? The rest is - thinking.(Helmut Lachenmann, 2017)CD (Version for Piano):Nicolas Hodges CD Wergo WER 7393 2 Bibliography:Ich bin nicht ,,pietistisch verformt. When the 24-year-old Richard Strauss, assistant conductor in Munich, began the composition of his third tone poem in the summer of 1888, he saw himself close to the aspiration prescribed by his mentor Alexander Ritter: to become the successor of Richard Wagner as a musical dramatist. Strauss had already been working on the text of his first opera Guntram for a year and additionally devoted himself to programmatic orchestral works oriented to the musical language of Liszt and Wagner in order to prepare himself compositionally for his new task. With the aid of Strauss and other musicians including Ludwig Thuille and Friedrich Rösch who had been gathering for “Ritter's round table†in Munich between 1886 and 1889, RitterÂ’s intention was to achieve success on a broad front with the New German School following the death of its two protagonists Wagner and Liszt. We do not know whether Ritter and his supporters jointly planned Strauss's compositional path towards opera, determined the subjectsof his prospective tone poems and considered various strategies of their musical realization, but the influence of this group shouldnot be underestimated. It cannot be ruled out that the number of three tone poems was fixed, as was their sequence of composition, which would progressively achieve its zenith in an increasing orientation to Liszt and Wagner. The circle could possibly have also discussed initial links to literary subjects (Macbeth and Don Juan) and ultimately the abstention from this practice in the third and final tone poem. The subject of the work, or rather in StraussÂ’s formulation its “poetic modelâ€, has occasionally been interpreted from an autobiographical aspect. Strauss however did not experience serious illness until May 1891 and once more in June 1892, long after Tod und Verklärung had been composed. Even without an external reason, the material would have been only too attractive for an admirer of Wagner and Liszt like Strauss, not to mention for his mentor Alexander Ritter. The concept of 'death and transfiguration' had already played a central role in LisztÂ’s symphonic poems Tasso and Prometheus.

Strauss's first tone poem distinguishes itself from all other subsequent orchestral compositions in its existence in three different versions. Even among the operas and other compositions in his hand there is no other work with a comparable history of origin and publication. What is more, the final version of Macbeth is the only valid form of the work and the only variant with further sources (cf. Critical Report) in addition to the autograph score. In contrast, the second version has only been preserved in an autograph score and autograph piano reduction (the orchestral parts which must have existed have obviously not survived). This was never printed and was replaced by the published third version. The two surviving versions should therefore not be considered to be of equal status. Unlike the case of Ariadne auf Naxos in which the earlier version was for a time the sole valid alternative and was yet never completely displaced by the soon dominating later version of the opera, only the final third version of Macbeth is considered as valid. Right from the outset, it was a matter of course for the editors of the present volume to include the second version as a first publication (in addition to the above-mentioned surviving pages of the first version), albeit in different forms. The surviving pages of the first version are reproduced in facsimile and the second version, as a subordinate form of the work, appears alongside Strauss's piano reduction in a modified source edition, i.e. without intervention on the part of the editors. The ultimate third version is published as a full edition (please refer to the Critical Report for further details). In order to facilitate a comparative study of the second and third versions, the relevant page numbers of the score are placed opposite one another (the autograph piano reduction of the second version is included at the end of the music section of the volume). The editors hope that this synoptic representation will prompt interest in further studies on Strauss's art of orchestration: a field of research which has still remained insufficiently examined. A study of Macbeth namely illuminates as clearly as could be wished how much significance Strauss allotted to sound alongside form. The subjects were not merely intended to generate an individual figure, but also specific tonal colours, and the instrumentation was simultaneously designed to provide an optimal communication of thematic-motivic texture to the audience. The 'new path' threw up consequences which caused Strauss a considerable amount of difficulty. He was however a fast learner and had already swum free with Don Juan and all the more with Tod und Verklarung.

The harmonic model for this piece is based on a subdivision of pitches in primary and secondary notes, in principle any chord can be viewed from it's structural qualities including interval content and symmetry, but it might also be conceived from a more acoustical point of view. The parallel basis for this work is a sequence of 12-tone chords repeated as a chaconne, every chord has it's Alter-Ego, an overtone series the fundamentals of which together form a bass line. By articulating the cycle differently, with always varied diagonal paths between two layers Lindberg has aimed to give the music some direction despite it's vague repetitive structure. Work for Orchestra premiered at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, by the London Sinfonietta under the direction of Esa-Pekka Salonen, April 1990.

The twelve “London Symphonies†comprise the sublime final statement of Haydn's symphonic ouvre. They were written for the London impresario Johann Peter Salomon, and Haydn himself conducted their premieres during his lengthy stays in the English metropolis in 1791/92 and 1794/95. Probably composed in the winter of 1791/92, the Symphony in D major no. 93 was, with its easily accessible (butby no means simple!) musical structure, perfectly tailored to London tastes, which demanded melodic clarity and expressive pathos. The Baroque echoes of Handel in the slow introduction to the first movement and in the festive mood of the finale with its timpani and trumpets would have been well received - no wonder the symphony had to be repeated multiple times in the same season after its performance in 1792! This study edition adopts the musical text of the Haydn Complete Edition, thereby guaranteeing the highest scholarly quality. An informative preface and a brief Critical Report make the handy score an ideal companion for all current and soon-to-be Haydn fans.

Laszlo Dubrovay wrote the following about Liszt and the piece now being published: +Liszt was for me the most important composer in my youth, and as a pianist I played a great number of his works. I admired him as an innovator, who enriched the technique of playing the instrument in a manner unparalleled in piano literature. Later his creative genius captivated me, as he opened up new paths for the future. His works paved the way for impressionism, expressionism, 20th-century folklorism and dodecaphonic thinking. His innovations were always material realisations of spiritual renewal. I wrote my First Symphony while studying in the United States in 1955, but the work has since undergone two substantial changes. The original four-movement structure changed into a two-movement structure in 1988, with an expansive, Romantic and pathos-laden principal movement followed by a grotesque and ironic scherzo. This version seems to owe something to Dmitri Shostakovich, one of the idols of 1950s Modernism in Finland. Later I found that the structure was out of balance, and in 2003 I added a lyrical slow movement (Poetico) between the two existing ones. In order to preserve the 1950s spirit of the original work, I based the slow movement on solo song written around the same time (third movement from the song cycle Die Liebenden).

Promising Discovery When a recording of this Symphony No. 17 by Friedrich Schneider appeared in 2002, it attracted some attention. Now, Breitkopf & Hartel presents the work that, like all Schneider's symphonies, had remained unpublished, for the first time in a modern edition. The composer does not use a pathetic-heroic tone as suggested by the key, but follows the urgent, roving, and cantabile character that the key has possessed, especially in early Romanticism since the Sturm und Drang. It is reminiscent of Franz Schubert who ventured a very similar reinterpretation of the classical symphony. With this work Schneider succeeds in designing a remarkably coherent and carefully developed composition. A gain for the repertoire, since the symphony, composed in 1822 and premiered that year in the Leipzig Gewandhaus, shows so much merit.

Nacht Und Trompeten by Hans Abrahamsen (1981). Programme note: The piece is dedicated to Hans Werner Henze, from whose request the piece arose. The music unfolds in a space, in which the memory of the earlier music has the same reality as the music of today. But the music of the memory is naturally distant and vague, whereas the music of today is present and gesticulated. In the opening section the past and the present are clearly separated, but during the piece, this balance is lifted, as the music of the past (trumpet signals, Sicilian melodicity, romantic Pathos, strawinskian neo-classicism) in a dynamic and often dramatic surrealistic play with minimalism and modernism oftoday is unravelled.
