Teach shifting with this beautiful melody by Bob Phillips. Shifting Sands is also perfectly suited for the concert stage. Musically, this piece is very accessible so students can focus on the shifts. Violins will practice 3rd position on the D, A, and E strings. Violas will practice 3rd position on the D and A strings. Cellos will practice 3rd and 4th positions on the D and A strings. Basses will practice 3rd, 4th, and 5th positions on the D and G strings. Shifts for all instruments are introduced by moving the first finger in a sliding (portamento) motion from 1st position up to 3rd position and back again, then progresses to shifting. Correlated to Sound Innovations for String Orchestra, Book 2, Level 3. (3:10) This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

Autograph lays bare Mendelssohn's Overture to A Midsummer Night's Dream To this day, Mendelssohns epoch-making Overture to A Midsummer Night's Dream has been performed on the basis of a more than dubious transmission. Neither the first edition of the parts (1832), and certainly not the print of the score based on these parts (1835) go back directly to the autograph of the 17-year-old composer, which is now located in Krakow. No wonder, since Mendelssohn had breezily given away his original at an early date. The result: during his lifetime, versions were published with his authorization, even though they were full of unintended inconsistencies. Yet the autograph of 1826 is unequivocal: it is clear, practically free of irregularities and diverges considerably from the corrupted printed version. Christian Martin Schmidt comes up with occasionally differing musical passages, but above all with logical and compositionally compelling performance instructions, laying bare to musical practice the original form buried beneath layers of falsified material for the first time.Christian Martin Schmidt is laying bare to musical practice the original form of Mendelssohn's epoch-making Overture to A Midsummer Night's Dream buried beneath layers of falsified material for the first time.

The Symphony No. 1 (originally in five movements) was first performed in Budapest in 1889, but the premiere as well as two further performances in Hamburg and Weimar turned out to be a fiasco. After 1894 Mahler removed the Blumine-movement. Until the last performance under his direction in New York in 1909, Mahler made revisions again and again. This edition strives to present a, for the performance practice, reliable music text of the final extant version that in 1910 Mahler corrected and deemed accurate for the new print. The Editorial Report gives detailed information on the provenance and evaluation of the sources as well as authentic annotations on performance practice. Individual comments document editorial interventions and deviations from current editions. The cloth-bound volume PB 5661 contains next to the final version of the four-movement Symphony, the Blumine movement. For the present Urtext edition of Beethoven's Symphony No. 2, the editor also consulted certain sources and authentic new variants for the first time; among them are the nonet arrangement made by Beethoven's pupil Ferdinand Ries in 1807, thus with authentic variants. Thanks to his vast knowledge, the editor has uncovered a number of errors and contradictions in the sources. The basic differences with respect to other editions chiefly concern the articulation and dynamics in movements 1, 2 and 4. They can easily be found in the Critical Commentary of the conducting score.Words are not enough to praise this exemplary edition, resulting from many years of systematic editorial work on the sources. Beethoven’s incidental music op. 84 was written in 1809 for a performance of Goethe’s drama “Egmont†at the Burgtheater in Vienna. Numerous composers of the day tried their hand at writing music for the dramatic material of Goethe’s tragedy, several in collaboration with the author himself. The overture reflects the themes of the play through its expressive music, and over the last two hundred years it has become one of the most popular works by Beethoven conceived for the stage. For this new edition, Beethoven specialist Jonathan Del Mar draws on various manuscript sources including a handwritten set of parts which has never been taken into account before. Thus, numerous discrepancies such as missing notes in the flute part or unclear bowing could be clarified for the first time.

Rameau's “Les Fêtes de l'Hymen et de l'Amour†was long considered second-rate because its première was associated with a political event. Yet this ballet abounds in novel dramaturgical effects that foreshadow his later operas, such as “Zaïsâ€, “Zoroastre†and “Les Boradesâ€. Working together with his librettist Cahusac, Rameau sought to weave the dance numbers, choruses and stage machinery more tightly into the main plot. He also experimented with stylistic devices unique to this work, the most famous being unquestionably the scene in which the Nile overflows its banks (an impressive ten-voice double chorus with solo voices and orchestra) and the sextet from “Arurisâ€, a scoring found nowhere else in his uvre. For the first time, this scholarly-critical edition of “Les Fêtes de l'Hymen et de l'Amour†presents a reference version of the work that is based on all the major sources for both the libretto and the music, including two recent musical discoveries. As most of the performance material for the première has vanished, our edition is based on the version prepared for the Acadmie Royale de Musique in 1748.

The New Mozart Edition offers researchers a musicologically unimpeachable text based on all the available sources (first and foremost Mozart's autograph manuscripts). At the same time, it also serves as an aid to authentic performances. The principal Series I to IX, containing Mozart's actual oeuvre, appeared between 1956 and 1991. They are regarded as a supreme achievement of Mozart scholarship in our time; modern performances of Mozart's music are unthinkable without them. The important supplementary volumes shed fresh and illuminating light on neglected aspects of Mozart's creative work, such as his activities as a teacher or as an arranger of other composer's works.
