Along with Symphonies Nos. 79 and 81, Haydn’s D-minor Symphony Hob. I:80 belongs to a set of symphonies that he completed in late 1784. He wrote them for his employer Prince Nikolaus Esterházy, his task being to entertain the prince with new music. The symphonies had to be suitable for the twenty-five to thirty musicians who were in the prince’s orchestra. Continuing the cooperation between Bärenreiter and the G. Henle publishing company regarding Haydn’s large choral works, operas and symphonies, this edition is based on the G. This arrangement of The Prince of Denmark March, or Trumpet Voluntary, provides the perfect setting for advocacy and striving for excellence since it is so recognizable. Three different versions of the final 8 bars, containing incorrect notes, are included. Each version contains an increasing percentage of correct pitches. Each represents a different letter grade. Play all four versions and then explain to parents and administration that the A+, 100% correct version is what we do every day in orchestra. Along with the real music for the final 8 bars, three other versions are included. The first version has 80% of the correct notes and 20% incorrect. The next has 90% correct notes and 10% incorrect. Then play the 80% or B- version, then the 90% or A- Version, and then the 95% A version. Haydn's three Symphonies nos. 90-92 might rightly be dubbed his “Paris Symphonies Part II,†as they were commissioned in 1788/89, likewise by the Société Olympique, for which Haydn had already composed his six “Paris Symphonies†nos. 82-87 just a few years earlier. Ironically enough, Haydn would later sell these three a second time to Prince von Oettingen-Wallerstein who requested he “receive 3 new symphonies from him.†Regardless of such mercantile entanglements, Haydn shows himself to be at the full height of his mastery as a symphonist in these works. Completed in 1788 according to the autograph manuscript, the Symphony in E flat major no. 91 astonishes, even for Haydn’s standards, with its many idiosyncrasies, such as the Baroque, contrapuntal theme of the first movement or the strings of trills in the slow variation movement. This study edition adopts the musical text of the Haydn Complete Edition, thereby guaranteeing the highest scholarly quality. An informative preface and a brief Critical Report make the handy scorean ideal companion for all current and soon-to-be Haydn fans.
