Varying styles and an exciting accelerando at the end make this piece a solid choice for concert or festivals. Korobushka (The Peddler) is a Russian folk song and dance. It is based on a poem written in 1861 by Nikolay Nekrasov. The music was written sometime in the late 19th century, although the composer is unknown. The dance that accompanies the song became popular in the early 1900s and was brought to America by Russian immigrants. This is a delightful and playable arrangement created by Michael Story. (1:50).

Det lyder nogenlunde sadan her i mit hoved:Hush little heart- hush.!!was time running too fast or did the hours sometimesseem long?,Were your beats too many or were they too few in the end?Hush little heart- hushdid you see too little or did you sometimes see too much?,was life too small or was it sometimes larger than life?was your thirst quenched or did you end up drained?hush, hush, little heart- hush!!,Don't be afraid, maybe you knew all the time:that one day you would have to be still-or maybe you didn't?Is that why you were beating so fast?hush, hush little heart-hush,- be comforted, 'cause even as you feel so small Your very existence is strange and beautiful - so, hush, hush, be comforted, be still my beating heart.

The Sieidi concerto is in one movement but divided into several sections both faster and slower, wildly rhythmic, lyrical and more static. For the soloist it is extremely demanding because he is constantly having to switch from one technique to another - for djembe and darabuka playing with the hands differs radically from that of tom-tom or drumstick technique or the playing of pitched percussion instruments such as the marimba and vibraphone.Normally, in a percussion concerto, the soloist has to play surrounded by a huge battery of instruments, often behind the orchestra. In Sieidi he uses only nine instruments, and he is in front of the orchestra the whole time. The instruments are in a row in front of the platform, starting with the djembe on the far right (as viewed by the audience) and ending with the tam-tam on the far left. The soloist plays only one instrument at a time. The title of the concerto, Sieidi, is Sami - a language spoken in the northern region of Finland, Sweden and Norway known as Lapland. It denotes an ancient cult place such as an unusually-shaped rock, sometimes also a special rock face or even a whole mountain fell. Called a toccata because it demonstrates the touch and technique of the orchestra sections, this piece states the melody in different ways, sometimes briskly and sometimes in augmentation against moving accompanimental figures. A showy and exciting arrangement, perfect for a postlude or finale.

Commissioned by the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, the opening ideas of this short but lively work call the listener to attention as they build to release a rushing-away line. The elements of this opening—three repeated notes, the falling bass-line and the scurrying string figures—provide the material from which the rest of the piece grows. The strong contrasts of the opening, however, continue throughout the movement, with frequent surprises as textures and surface rhythms change—sometimes surging forward, sometimes held back. But behind this is the steady one-in-a-bar beat of the classical scherzo, providing a background rhythmic continuity to tie the surface contrasts together.

Composer's Notes: This piece, written during the winter months of 2000-2001, consists of one movement, Allegro con fuoco, in which an old score is revisited, raided and ravished by its composer. The earlier music had been written in the mid-fifties for a stage work Maratona di Danza and for its maker, the director Luchino Visconti. Elements from the older piece reappear on and off like shadows under the surface of new ones, like more or less vague memories, images of young people suffering pain and despair in their struggle for survival in a barbaric, pitiless modern world. My new composition is a kind of concerto for very large symphony orchestra, an etude on constant and often rapid musical changes of mood and colours, built on a variety of rhythmic figures, incessantly and brutally pushing the music ahead. Sometimes, it is as though voices are weeping, sometimes crying out loud with pain, with anxiety, under the cold hearted pressure of an overwhelming violence. Hans Werner Henze Commissioned on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of das neue werk, Hamburg. Premiered on 29th June 2001. Duration 15 minutes.

Henry Purcell (1659-1695) held numerous appointments at the Royal court and Westminster Abbey, and is considered by many to be the greatest ever English-born composer. His prolific work covered all fields: orchestral, ecclesiastical, operatic, theatrical, incidental, and chamber music were all enriched by his output.
Fantazias And In Nomines is a collection of his 15 Fantasies and 2 In Nomines, Z. 731-747. Purcell is credited with popularising the hitherto arcane form of the Fantasy, perhaps most famously in his Fanstasia Upon One Note, where a middle C is sustained throughout - in live performances this issometimes played by a volunteer from the audience!

Overture Edinburgh was composed in 1952. There are certain elements in this work that bind it to the city of Edinburgh. The opening carries the rhythm of the word 'Edinburgh' itself. This rhythm occurs frequently throughout the work, sometimes in slow tempo, and sometimes in fast.

Tchaikovsky spent the summer and autumn of 1880 at his sister's country estate in Kam'ianka, Ukraine, where he sought peace and relaxation. But after a short time the desire to work took hold of him again. âI'm sketching a symphony or string quintet just now; I don't know where it's going yet,â he wrote to his friend and patroness Nadezhda von Meck. In the end it turned out to be a Serenade for String Orchestra, which numbers among his most beautiful inspirations and is today a central work in the genre. The four movements captivate with their diverse moods â be it the Mozartian first movement âin the form of a sonatinaâ, the elegant Waltz, the melancholy âElegiaâ or the rousing Finale. For this new source-critical edition it was possible to consult the autograph in Moscow as well as the early printed editions into which Tchaikovsky sometimes entered a number of minor revisions. Clear the stage for the new reference edition of this indispensable work of the string-orchestra repertoire!

This traditional Hanukkah song, My Candles (sometimes known as In the Window), is a lovely and haunting melody written in strophic form. Strophic music is a song that has only one phrase of melodic material with changing text to give variation. Now combined by arranger Brendan McBrien with an original melody that appears between verses, this piece is a beautiful addition to the holiday repertoire! (3:00).

Young string musicians will enjoy performing this heavy rock style piece because it utilizes an aggressive style and mixed tonality similar to 'their' music that they listen to for fun. The concept behind the title of this piece is that, although we sometimes move dully through our daily routines, it is good to take time to appreciate the individual moments that make up our lives, like a child does the first time they experience something. All parts are in first position with few accidentals or difficult bowing patterns. At the same time, this piece will challenge your group with its independent voicings and syncopated, interlocking rhythms. This piece would add variety to any school concert, and would fit nicely in a festival program, especially one that utilized several different genres. (3:40).

“In early 2006 I was commissioned to write a piece to be premiered in a church. Before beginning work on it, I tested the acoustics there, according to which the compositional concept developed. Somewhat later I began to compose the piece 'with the church', so to speak. During the process of composition, however, the music gradually distanced itself from the original spatial conditions and developed into a piece whose characteristics were transformed into a church-acoustical structure. 'I see your music when I hear it', a listener once said to me. Does one really see the music? Can fragrances be heard? Or can one smell colours? This 5-part composition is music in which the tones move in space on different levels, even when they are sometimes very quiet and slow; they are clear and transparent even when they are apparently dense, complicated and energetic.†(Xiaoyong Chen).

In this most perfect of Chopin's rondos the orchestra becomes an expressive and important partner for the piano soloist. The solo piano version is published in 00132229. The two piano reduction is published in 00132232. The National Edition of the Works of Fryderyk Chopin Published by PWM Exclusively Distributed by Hal Leonard Corporation Co-Editors Jan Ekier and Pawel Kaminski The objective of the National Edition is to present Chopin's complete output in its authentic form, based on the entire body of available sources. Sources were analyzed with up-to-date scientific and musicological methodology. The National Edition was based on sources originated from the composer, mainly autographs, copies of autographs and first editions with the composer's corrections, and pupils' copies with Chopin's annotations. In cases when original sources were lacking, the closest possible materials were used. Collecting the source materials was a laborious task which took years of effort. The characteristics of sources, the links and discrepancies between them as well as the reasons for particular editorial decisions are discussed in the Source Commentary in each volume. The Performance Commentary appended to each volume includes: the realization of ornaments, comments on pedal markings (the original markings sometimes are inadequate, due to the difference in sound between pianos used in Chopin`s times and modern pianos), suggestions as to the harmonic legato (a performance technique often used by Chopin and now forgotten). It takes a historico-critical approach and seeks to document the history of the works and writings by shedding light on their transformations, thus identifying the various versions as witnesses of evolving aesthetic and historical positions. Eislers complete oeuvre (only a limited number of his works had penetrated the publics awareness up until the 1990s) first became the object of an editorial undertaking when the Eisler - Gesammelte Werke (EGW) was founded by Nathan Notowicz. It was later placed under the direction of Manfred Grabs and Eberhardt Klemm, and began issuing its publications in 1968 through the intermediary of the Deutscher Verlag fur Musik in Leipzig. However, only four volumes of music and five volumes of writings were published. The Hanns Eisler Complete Edition pursues the work begun at that time, although it has had to fundamentally revise its editorial principles. In this respect, the Hanns Eisler Complete Edition can be considered as a completely new editorial undertaking. It became necessary to reconceive the organization of the volumes and series as well as the editorial guidelines in order to adapt the standards of historico-critical editing generally applicable today to the specific and sometimes singular circumstances of Eislers works. The Critical Commentaries pertaining to the main volumes follow the music section or, whenever they are too extensive, appear in a special volume.Series I: Choral MusicSeries II: Music for Voice and Instrumental Ensemble or OrchestraSeries III: Music for Voice and PianoSeries IV: Instrumental MusicSeries V: Incidental MusicSeries VI: Film MusicSeries VII: Sketches and FragmentsSeries VIII: Arrangements of works by other composersSeries IX: Writings, Letters and InterviewsSON 501 has been awarded the German Music Edition Prize 2003.SON 502 has been awarded the German Music Edition Prize 2007.The major upheavals that transformed society and musical aesthetics during the first half of the 20th century also profoundly affected the life of Hanns Eisler, as well as his compositions and writings. The importance and scope of Eislers oeuvre are reason enough to make his works accessible to musical scholarship and practice in a comprehensive fashion. Price reduction for a subscription.

In 1998, at the end of the 20th century, Breitkopf & Hartel started the publication of the Complete Edition, which is made possible thanks to the cooperation of the various Sibelius publishers. The Editors (Helsinki University Library and The Sibelius Society of Finland) and the Editorial Committee (Chairman: Timo Virtanen, Helsinki) believe that the volumes of JSW will provide the basis for a now conception of the creative work of Jean Sibelius.Reviews: One immediately recognizes the towering production quality of these volumes - a point that can be extended to all volumes thus far published in the set. The music is a joy to read; and the lucidity and thoroughness of the texts … are models of scholarly editions, and should be required reading for all bibliography and music-editing courses. … In sum, the JSW is a remarkable project: the scholarship is impeccable, the music scores and texts are simply a joy to study. Edward Jurkowski, Notes December 2011: 442-443At the back of this magnificent book are pages of critical commentary on a bar-by-bar analysis of an endless supply of musical notation requiring interpretation by the editor. … For the general, non-musically trained, purchaser of the edition there is the magisterial introduction to read, and fascinating reading it is. Edward W. Clark, Sibelius Society Newsletter 2009 The Sibelius pieces, however, are a revelation. I opened this magnificently produced volume - complete with multilingual critical report and generous facsimiles of original manuscripts - expecting Grieg-style quasi-nationalistic character pieces, and was instead presented with an incredible array of styles, textures, harmonic languages and levels of difficulty. Chris White, Piano Professional Summer 2009: 2This is not only a scholarly edition of one of the composer's major works, it is also a model for the philological editing of music in general. … JSW has chosen to have the emendations reflected in two places, in certain cases even in three: as graphic indications in the music text, in prose form in the critical commentary, and sometimes also in the form of a warning footnote on the music page. There can be no doubt that such a procedure is very user-friendly, but it disturbs the appearance of the music and may mislead the user into thinking that there are two or more equally valid readings. Niels Krabbe, Fontes Artis Musicae 54/2, 2007: 248 Editorial standards are high throughout, and maintain a careful balance between the competing demands of practical exigency and the need to provide as much scholarly evidence of variants as possible.
