Though its origin is unknown, Spotted Pony appears to have roots in the Ozarks in Missouri, Arkansas, or Texas. Fiddlers in the early 20th century claim to have learned it from their grandparents' generation, so it most likely has been played since the late 19th century or earlier. It is based on a poem written in 1861 by Nikolay Nekrasov. The music was written sometime in the late 19th century, although the composer is unknown. The dance that accompanies the song became popular in the early 1900s and was brought to America by Russian immigrants. This is a delightful and playable arrangement created by Michael Story. (1:50).
