Ballet Suite in 5 movements (revised version)3222; 4331; timp, perc, hp, pno; stgs Duration: 24' Composed: 2008 Published by: Alla Pavlova Music Although it maintains the charm of the original Hans Christian Andersen tale, Alla Pavlova's Thumbelina is a considerable musical, visual and narrative expansion of the story to make it suitable as a full-length ballet and family-programming alternative to The Nutcracker. Musically, it is scored for full symphony orchestra ([3,2,2,2]-[4,3,3,1]-[timp.,perc.]-[Hp]-[Strings], Percussion: Bass dr., Snare dr., Wooden Block, Tambourine, Triangle, Glock., Vibraphone, Celesta) and contains not only many beautiful, lyrical and moving waltzes and other classical themes, but also rhythms such as tango, boogie-woogie and ragtime. Narratively, the story has been adapted to include a varied and colorful cast of characters. The Thumbelina Suite (which has been recorded by the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra for Naxos) can be heard at http://www.allapavlova.com/listen.html or by clicking on the image below. She has created a synopsis of the ballet, which is of course based on the Andersen fairy tale. We’ll gladly send this synopsis on request. The Stranger is titled after the novel of the same name by the French existentialist philosopher and writer Albert Camus. The piece seems to capture some of the general mood of the story, with its underlying feeling of melancholy and sense of inevitability. Since the music is written in an even eighth-note style, with either a contemporary classical or a Latin rhythmic feeling, the string section is not required to phrase in a jazz or swing style. The use of light percussion rather than a drumset makes the arrangement ideal for acoustic performance without amplification.

S'vivon (se-vi-vohn) is the Hebrew word for dreidl, a four-sided top that is popular with children during the celebration of the Jewish holiday Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights. In this arrangement by Brendan McBrien, variations are created through the subtle use of motivic rhythms from within the melody, presenting the theme in different voices and keys in both arco and pizzicato, using the A section of the tune as an accompaniment for the B section, and, finally, changing the modality to major, which creates (for a short time) a very different feeling from the traditional minor setting. Libretto by James Fenton
In a make-believe world, based loosely on Bombay and Kashmir, the story of Haroun is a tale of a fight between the free imagination and the powers that oppose it. Haroun's father, Rashid, the Shah of Blah, is a professional and gifted story-teller, a popular figure much in demand at public events. Feeling neglected, his wife is persuaded to leave him and run away with a neighbor. After this, Rashid loses confidence in his powers of story-tellling, haunted by his son's question: 'What's the use of stories that aren't even there?' Rashid is due to speak at a political rally to be held by the sinister politician, Snooty Buttoo. He is told that if he does not come up with his usual fund of tales, his tongue will be cut out. As Rashid despairs, Haroun determines to rescue his father's talent - a project in which he learns that the Ocean of the Sea of Stories, the source of all stories, is being polluted by the enemy of all stories, the evil Khattam Shud. In a series of brilliant imagined adventures, Haroun succeeds in defeating the powers of darkness, and restoring happiness to his family, and to the city where he lives.
Salman Ruishdie's children's book, written in the aftermath of the fatwa, has an effervescent style which is full of rhymes and wordplay. The libretto stays very close to the spirit of the original, conjuring up a fantasy world in which, nonetheless, one never loses sight of harsh political reality and the great issues of freedom of speech and imagination. -- James Fenton, 1998

Published by: Subito Music Publishing Composer's Note: De profundis ad lucem (out of the depths towards light) opens with an atmosphere of stillness, out of which two main sections emerge, one reflecting hope and the other struggle. Hope is expressed with a recurring theme that gradually layers upon itself, imparting a feeling of birth. This section suddenly gives way to struggle, represented with loud brass, biting accents, and thundering timpani figures. Following an extended musical landscape, these two sections return, only in reverse, with struggle resolving into hope. The work ends in tranquillity as it began. --N.G.

Forever Free composed at the request of the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra, André Raphel, Music Director, to celebrate the sesquicentennial of the State of West Virginia. Maestro Raphel suggested a work incorporating indigenous elements of the State's musical heritage, capturing in musical sound the robust spirit of West Virginia citizens and the celebratory atmosphere surrounding the year-long commemoration of the State's 150th anniversary, June 20, 2013. Forever Free is cast in one movement in three sections, with the title inspired by the state motto, “Montani semper liberi,†usually translated as “Mountaineers forever free.†Versions for both orchestra and wind band are available.
