Symphony No. 8 for Orchestra (2011) by Per Norgard. Premiered on September 19, 2013 by the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra and John Storgards. Programme note: The first movement opens with sculptural rising and falling scales. Visually the sound may call to mind, say, spirals or ziggurats (temple towers). Brisk music leads to the climax of the movement. The second movement is slow and sensually melodious and has three interludes of greater timbral melodic action. The third movement begins very restlessly but towards the climax the tempo gradually begins to accelerate. An oscillating pianissimomurmur ends the movement - and the symphony. Symphony no. 8 is commissioned by Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra and is besides the Orchestra dedicated to the conductor John Storgards. Per Norgard (2012).

This work was written with a mix between computer technology and the more traditional orchestra, the piece was composed in such a way that it would support its own acoustics. Lindberg worked with amplification of instruments and electronically transformed sounds thus producing greater possibilities to abandon acoustic limits. In order for the piece to be supported by it's own acoustics, the piece had to be written in terms of foreground and background harmony, every foreground chord would always have it's background, a shadow existing without it's main chord. Another theme to the piece is that of textural motion as rapid gestures and motions are a big part of the composer's interest. Static repitions seemed to limit the piece however so they were compensated for on another level, so with a repetitive rhythmic pattern, the harmonic material changes rapidly or when a chain of chords is static the rhythmic and timbral qualities vary frequently. Work for orchestra commissioned by the Finnish Broadcasting Company.

There is no greater virtue befitting to Mankind than faith, which manifested, doth friendship firmly bind. This verse was written by Simon Dach, the leader of the Konisberg circle of poets, during the Thirty Years' War, and a little later was set to music by Heinrich Albert. The anxieties and tribulations of the period are reflected in the songs and make it particularly applicable to us as survivors of the strife and disorder of our own day. Thus, Harald Genzmer has adopted it as the cantus firmus of his Prologue for Orchestra, in which we are reminded of it throughout, in its original form, in inversion, fanfare introduction, funeral march, intermezzo and final allegro.

Joachim Raff's Fifth Symphony Lenore op. 177, composed in 1872, reveals the composer as a representative of the middle ground between Neo-German aesthetics and the symphonic tradition. It owes its name to G. A. Burger's ballade, which is the programmatic basis of the final movement. Using this literary model, Raff oriented himself to the Berlioz program symphonies and the Liszt symphonic-poem concept, on the one hand, but on the other, he let the three preceding movements follow traditional symphonic form. Raff conducted the Lenore symphony's premiere in December 1872 in a concert by the Furstliche Hofkapelle in Sondershausen. The concert went to his satisfaction, although the audience evidently did not know what to make of the work: [...] and the symphony [...] was played before this faintly musical party. Essentially for the greater glory of God and my edification, less for that of the said public, which seems to have been rather horrified by it. His friend Hans von Bulow had, however, a great pleasure in hearing the symphony the following year in Berlin. In her preface, the editor Iris Eggenschwiler provides detailed information about the work's genesis, documents Raff's ideas and intentions, and facilitates a comprehensive orientation within the historical context. Breitkopf & Hartel is now presenting for the first time with this symphony an orchestral work by Raff in a modern Urtext edition, thus also continuing its collaboration with the Joachim-Raff-Gesellschaft.In collaboration with the Joachim-Raff-Archiv Lachen (CH).

The history of the symphony is full of curiosities, ranging from works that are extremely long or scored for extensive instrumental forces to those of dubious authorship. There are also famous symphonies labelled as No. 0, works with alternate or multiple opus numbers, and a wealth of 'unfinished' symphonies. Krzysztof Pendereckis 6. Sinfonie can also be included in this category, since his Seventh and Eighth were completed decades ago. This work is comprised of eight songs on Chinese texts connected by solo intermezzos played on the Chinese stringed instrument, erhu. As in his two preceding works, the focus here is on vowels. This work, however, is scored for smaller orchestral forces and possesses a more intimate chamber music character, at times with greater melancholy than before. Penderecki has declared this symphony to be his farewell from the genre, although we know from experience that anything is possible with symphonies.

Hardcover full score. Introductory texts presented in English, German, and Polish. The Lithuanian Rhapsody (Rapsodia litewska), Op. 11 is the third - after Returning Waves and Eternal Songs - of the six symphonic poems by Mieczyslaw Karlowicz. Composition was probably taking shape during the summer months of 1906 in Warsaw. Lithuanian Rhapsody differs significantly from the other parts of 'programme cycle' which Mieczyslaw Karlowicz's symphonic poems may be regarded as forming. This is a work based primarily on thematic material derived from folk output (something that would never again occur in the composer's brief biography), compared with the earlier score of Eternal Songs or the later Stanislaw and Anna Oswiecim it displays much greater stylistic independence of the German music embodied around the turn of the twentieth century.

Like my oratorio Novae de infinito laudes, this work, too, has been influenced by the human world and the scenery of Rome, indeed, perhaps even by the greater hardness of the roman language compared to that of Naples. The first four notes of the subsidiary theme of the second movement which appears for the first time in bar 36 are borrowed from the song My own, my own from the second act of my opera Elegy for Young Lovers; they appear again and again in various forms, even in the second and third movements.- Hans Werner Henze.
