Robert Schumann placed great importance on the genre of the overture, as can be seen in the chronology of the genesis of his sole opera Genoveva. In his Haushaltbuch the composer entered as his first idea thoughts of an overture, then produced the score even before having begun working on the actual opera. Schumann was right on the mark when he suspected that the overture alone should enjoy a favorable reception. The Overture appeared in print at about the same time that the opera was premiered. It established itself in the concert hall as an autonomous work and ranks today - along with the Manfred Overture - among Schumann's most beloved concert overtures. The Genoveva Overture is being released in a text-critical Breitkopf Urtext edition for the first time. The main source is the first printing revised by Schumann. The Urtext debut of Schumann's beloved overture.

In his Slavonic Dances Op. 46, Dvorak did not draw on pre-existent music, but created something original and new, projecting his own compositional will into the creative process. What we hear are Dvoraks melodies, and that it is due to his creative will that he cast them as in Dance 3, for example in the form of a melodic four-tone model which is common to many folk songs and childrens songs. Finally, it is his rhythmic invention and shaping of the musical character of each dance that breathe life into the elements of Slavonic dance music. The Slavonic Dances Op. 46, which began to conquer the world's concert halls in 1878, made a major contribution to Dvorak's international breakthrough. The Urtext edition is based on the main sources, mainly on the autograph score and the first edition.

The question Why add music to such perfect poetry? preoccupied Schumann long and intensively. His first compositional approach to Goethes Faust began in 1844, but it was not until 1851 that he finally completed the Scenes. At Liszts suggestion, Schumann added an overture in 1853, a symphonic instrumental introduction which atmospherically evokes the action of the Scenes but has no direct thematic reference to them. As an independent overture, the work has been played relatively rarely in concert halls to this day; the general prejudice towards Schumanns late works was no doubt partly responsible for this. The first Urtext edition of the overture was based on the autograph score that was revised by Schumann and served as the principal source. It should give new impulses to the future reception of this work which Paul Dukas hailed as a miracle, from beginning to end.The Faust Overture in its First Urtext Edition.

The Overture to Ruy Blas, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's last overture, was not composed as an autonomously conceived score, but as the opening piece of a stage work. Nevertheless, its immediate success at the Leipzig first performance in 1839, as well as the fact that no further contributions to Victor Hugo's drama followed from Mendelssohn's pen soon made it well known in the concert hall. The work's special history, including several arrangements occasioned by various performances, led to the fact that the overture had its largest circulation in the version of the posthumous first edition on which this edition is also based.

A Programmatic Declaration of BeliefFelix Mendelssohn Bartholdy composed his Reformation Symphony for the celebrations marking the 300th anniversary of the Confessio Augustana, the Protestant declaration of faith. Owing to various and only partially explained reasons, there was no performance in 1830, the year in question; it was only two years later that the composer conducted the premiere of his work, now heavily revised, in Berlin. There was only one more performance in Mendelssohn's lifetime, this one conducted by Julius Rietz in Dusseldorf; the composer had since distanced himself from his opus.Conceived for the concert hall, the symphony formulates its theological references through the integration of various motives. This occurs in the finale, for example, in which Mendelssohn quotes the Luther chorale Ein feste Burg in the flute, from where it builds up to a triumphant principal theme. The strong extra-musical aspect must have been one of the reasons for the composer's later avoidance of this score, especially since Mendelssohn was becoming increasingly skeptical about explicitly programmatic music in the instrumental domain. Next to the Dusseldorf performance material of 1837, two scribal copies have been examined for the first time; they transmit the main stages of the version of 1830.

Immediately after finishing his First Symphony in B flat major op. 38, Robert Schumann wrote the present D minor Symphony in 1841. Despite its successful world premiere at the Leipzig Gewandhaus on 4 December 1841, this first version remained unpublished during the composer's lifetime. It took the great Johannes Brahms himself to recognize its qualities and commit himself actively and successfully to a renewed performance in 1889. We owe it to the many supporters of the two versions that they practically stand on an equal footing today, and are both often heard in the concert hall.

The famous Valse triste grew out of the incidental music to Arvid Jarnefelts drama Kuolema (Death). After the first staged performances in December 1903 at the Finnish National Theater in Helsinki, Sibelius expanded the original string scoring by adding winds and timpani. It is in this form that the work was first heard at the University of Helsinki's festival hall on 25 April 1904 under the direction of the composer before it set out to conquer the musical world.

Marche fatale is an incautiously daring escapade that may annoy the fans of my compositions more than my earlier works, many of which have prevailed only after scandals at their world premieres. My Marche fatale has, though, little stylistically to do with my previous compositional path; it presents itself without restraint, if not as a regression, then still as a recourse to those empty phrases to which modern civilization still clings in its daily utility music, whereas music in the 20th and 21st centuries has long since advanced to new, unfamiliar soundscapes and expressive possibilities. The key term is banality. As creators we despise it, we try to avoid it - though we are not safe from the cheap banal even within new aesthetic achievements. Many composers have incidentally accepted the banal. Mozart wrote Ein musikalischer Spass [A Musical Jape], a deliberately amateurishly miscarried sextet. Beethoven's Bagatellen op. 119 were rejected by the publisher on the grounds that few will believe that this minor work is by the famous Beethoven. Mauricio Kagel wrote, tongue in cheek, so to speak, Marsche, um den Sieg zu verfehlen [Marches for being Unvictorious], Ligeti wrote Hungarian Rock; in his Circus Polka Stravinsky quoted and distorted the famous, all too popular Schubert military march, composed at the time for piano duet. I myself do not know, though, whether I ought to rank my Marche fatale alongside these examples: I accept the humor in daily life, the more so as this daily life for some of us is not otherwise to be borne. In music, I mistrust it, considering myself all the closer to the profounder idea of cheerfulness having little to do with humor. However: Isn't a march with its compelling claim to a collectively martial or festive mood absurd, a priori? Is it even music at all? Can one march and at the same time listen? Eventually, I resolved to take the absurd seriously - perhaps bitterly seriously - as a debunking emblem of our civilization that is standing on the brink. The way - seemingly unstoppable - into the black hole of all debilitating demons: that can become serene. My old request of myself and my music-creating surroundings is to write a non-music, whence the familiar concept of music is repeatedly re-defined anew and differently, so that derailed here - perhaps? - in a treacherous way, the concert hall becomes the place of mind-opening adventures instead of a refuge in illusory security. How could that happen? The rest is - thinking.(Helmut Lachenmann, 2017)CD (Version for Piano):Nicolas Hodges CD Wergo WER 7393 2 Bibliography:Ich bin nicht ,,pietistisch verformt. Zitat: Moro lasso, al mio duolo (Ich sterbe, matt, an meiner Qual) (6. Buch) 3. Zitat: Gia piansi nel dolore; o dolorosa Sorte (Schon weinte ich in Schmerzen, oh schmerzliches Geschick) (6. Buch) 4. Zitat: Ahi gia mi discolero (Ach schon entfarbte ich mich) (Wehe, der Tod kommt) (4. Buch) 5.

It takes a historico-critical approach and seeks to document the history of the works and writings by shedding light on their transformations, thus identifying the various versions as witnesses of evolving aesthetic and historical positions. Eislers complete oeuvre (only a limited number of his works had penetrated the publics awareness up until the 1990s) first became the object of an editorial undertaking when the Eisler - Gesammelte Werke (EGW) was founded by Nathan Notowicz. It was later placed under the direction of Manfred Grabs and Eberhardt Klemm, and began issuing its publications in 1968 through the intermediary of the Deutscher Verlag fur Musik in Leipzig. However, only four volumes of music and five volumes of writings were published. The Hanns Eisler Complete Edition pursues the work begun at that time, although it has had to fundamentally revise its editorial principles. In this respect, the Hanns Eisler Complete Edition can be considered as a completely new editorial undertaking. It became necessary to reconceive the organization of the volumes and series as well as the editorial guidelines in order to adapt the standards of historico-critical editing generally applicable today to the specific and sometimes singular circumstances of Eislers works. The Critical Commentaries pertaining to the main volumes follow the music section or, whenever they are too extensive, appear in a special volume.Series I: Choral MusicSeries II: Music for Voice and Instrumental Ensemble or OrchestraSeries III: Music for Voice and PianoSeries IV: Instrumental MusicSeries V: Incidental MusicSeries VI: Film MusicSeries VII: Sketches and FragmentsSeries VIII: Arrangements of works by other composersSeries IX: Writings, Letters and InterviewsSON 501 has been awarded the German Music Edition Prize 2003.SON 502 has been awarded the German Music Edition Prize 2007.The major upheavals that transformed society and musical aesthetics during the first half of the 20th century also profoundly affected the life of Hanns Eisler, as well as his compositions and writings. ,,to rub).
