A memorable musical competition commissioned by the emperor Joseph II took place on 7 February 1786 as part of a festival in the orangery of the Schönbrunn palace. A German Singspiel ensemble performed Mozart’s “Schauspieldirektor†whilst Antonio Salieri’s “Prima la musica e poi le parole†was performed by the Italian court singers and musicians. This charming opera satire belongs to the genre of “metamelodramma†in which the opera itself becomes the subject of the action. The people who are part of an opera production, for example the librettist, composer and prima donna, appear as characters on the stage and are presented in a humorous self-reflection. In this ‘theatre about theatre’ Salieri parodies the music from Giuseppe Sarti’s “Giulio Sabino†in his insert arias, thus playing on the music which was totally familiar with the audience of the time. By reflecting on the musical-dramatic style of that period and discussing whether ‘the word’ or ‘the music’ should take priority, this masterpiece is considered to be an early forerunner to Richard Strauss’s “Capriccioâ€.The new edition of the score is published as part of “opera – Spectrum of European Music Theatre in Separate Editionsâ€. There are several alterations regarding the libretto text, stage directions, articulation, ornamentation, etc. which have been incorporated into this newly engraved vocal score. Furthermore, all appendix numbers from the score which concern the quotations from Giuseppe Sarti’s “Giulio Sabino†have also been incorporated.• Urtext vocal score based on the historical-critical hybrid score published as part of “opera – Spectrum of European Music Theatre in Separate Editions†edited by Thomas Betzwieser (music edition) and Adrian La Salvia (text edition).• Original Italian libretto with singable German translation• Comprehensive bilingual foreword (Ger/Eng) on the genesis and reception of the work, on metamelodramma and intertextuality etc.• Includes an extensive appendix to the quotations taken from Giuseppe Sarti’s “Giulio Sabinoâ€â€¢ Idiomatic piano reduction

2,1 2,1 2,1 2,1; 4331; timp, perc(3), cel, hp; stgs Duration: 11' Composed: 2013 Published by: Subito Music Publishing Performance materials available on rental: Alas! Babylon’s Final Sunset is another installment in my series of works that musically comment on the biblical books of Daniel and Revelation. The principal source of inspiration for this works comes from the 18th chapter of the book of Revelation. This chapter states that the career of Babylon the Great is finally coming to an end. The music begins with a mysterious pianissimo tremolo accompanied by tam-tam and bass drum. The initial flourishes in the oboes and English horn serve as the principal motive of warning. As the music continues, there are varying degrees of agitation among the strings and woodwinds. Throughout the work there are rhythmic motives in the brass, percussion, and various woodwind instruments that sing and speak Babylon is Fallen in triple meter. As the tutti ensemble arrives at a climax, the orchestral texture becomes thinner and slightly transparent. As the music continues, the opening motive returns in the oboes, however the counterpoint produces a series of solo laments. These passages are intended to provide picturesque images of these words: And the voice of harpers, and musicians, and of pipers, and trumpeters, shall be heard no more at all in thee; and no craftsman, of whatsoever craft he be, shall be found any more in thee; and the sound of a millstone shall be heard no more at all in thee; And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee. and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived. And in her was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth. Rev. 18:22-24 The following passages musically comment on the historical career of Babylon with a sense of her impending destruction. The series of laments transforms into the more emphatic rhythmic motive Babylon is Fallen. The orchestral texture begins to become more condense, once again, with the initial flourishes of, but with notable variations. Finally, the celesta, harp, oboes, English horn, and strings sing profundities that are finally transformed into a minor mode tonality that fades away with the ringing of the tam-tam. Babylon has finally seen her last sunset.

As you know, holiday music typically offers little or no musical depth, which leads to a less than enthusiastic reaction from the orchestra. Your piece offered a level of musical sophistication worthy of a professional symphony while still creating a festive holiday spirit. The orchestra and I enjoyed having the opportunity to dig into something substantive yet fun on our holiday concert. See composer website for audio sample. Cinque studi per orchestra (1959?60) clearly documents the process by which Maros - starting from Bartók's expressionist works written during the 1920s, especially The Miraculous Mandarin and The Night's Music -escaped from the earlier tonal, classicizing realm of music. The composition takes the form of a suite, with alternating notturno and scherzo movements. Decisive to the character of both are percussion instruments hitherto used solo only rarely in Hungarian orchestral practice. (Anna Dalos).

Forever Free composed at the request of the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra, André Raphel, Music Director, to celebrate the sesquicentennial of the State of West Virginia. Maestro Raphel suggested a work incorporating indigenous elements of the State's musical heritage, capturing in musical sound the robust spirit of West Virginia citizens and the celebratory atmosphere surrounding the year-long commemoration of the State's 150th anniversary, June 20, 2013. Forever Free is cast in one movement in three sections, with the title inspired by the state motto, “Montani semper liberi,†usually translated as “Mountaineers forever free.†Versions for both orchestra and wind band are available.
