Newtown wants to be remembered as a center for transformation. Composed by a Newtown resident, this music is a heartfelt tribute to Newtown's fallen angels and their families and more. It is a celebration of love over evil and the key role music can play as a healing force in any community. The arrangement includes two sets of parts (grade 2 and grade 3, respectively) so that older and younger students may perform the piece either together or separately. Beethoven did not work continuously on this symphony and interrupted his work a couple of times. As the sketches show, he presumably wrote down first ideas in the autumn of 1800.No other autograph material has survived. As Ferdinand Ries, a pupil of Beethoven, bitterly reports, Beethoven gave him the autograph, but it was unfortunately stolen by a friend, out of pure friendship. In April 1803, the composition was premiered publicly, together with the first symphony and the third piano concerto with Beethoven himself as soloist. Although Beethoven's first two symphonies are still influenced by Haydn and Mozart, novelties can already be discovered. The second symphony starts breaking away from traditional forms and lets us surmise the monumentality of Beethoven's innovation. The editor, Armin Raab, critically illuminates the transmission of the work and its sources. He also clears up a wide spread belief in older literature, that this cheerful work might have been composed parallel to the Heiligenstadter Testament. The practical performance material by Breitkopf & Hartel is based on the music text of the New Beethoven Complete Edition and constitutes the authoritative reading of Beethoven research.

Perfect for young players or as a quick play-down finale for older players, this easy medley will soon become a favorite that you'll hear them playing before class begins. All sections play the melodies of The Waves of Tory and The Stronsay Wedding, providing interest and a chance to work on dynamics. Performance recommendations to help make the tunes sound fiddley are provided in the score.

Composer's Notes: This piece, written during the winter months of 2000-2001, consists of one movement, Allegro con fuoco, in which an old score is revisited, raided and ravished by its composer. The earlier music had been written in the mid-fifties for a stage work Maratona di Danza and for its maker, the director Luchino Visconti. Elements from the older piece reappear on and off like shadows under the surface of new ones, like more or less vague memories, images of young people suffering pain and despair in their struggle for survival in a barbaric, pitiless modern world. My new composition is a kind of concerto for very large symphony orchestra, an etude on constant and often rapid musical changes of mood and colours, built on a variety of rhythmic figures, incessantly and brutally pushing the music ahead. Sometimes, it is as though voices are weeping, sometimes crying out loud with pain, with anxiety, under the cold hearted pressure of an overwhelming violence. Hans Werner Henze Commissioned on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of das neue werk, Hamburg. Premiered on 29th June 2001. Duration 15 minutes.

All music is sound, but not all music is simple. Simplicity is a virtue, especially in the arts, a fact which becomes increasingly and inescapably obvious to me the older I get. In Sound and Simplicity four out of the sevenmovements are very simple (as in the absence of any structural and metric complexity) indeed, in fact the second movement Trance, a sustained chord, employs only four notes, but gradually presented over three octaves.

In his brief career George Butterworth (1885-1916) composed only a small quantity of orchestral works, but what he wrote has never subsequently been absent from the repertoire. The two English Idylls, the Rhapsody 'A Shropshire Lad' and the idyll The Banks of Green Willow are, with the music of his friend Ralph Vaughan Williams and of Gustav Holst, among the most exquisite statements of the English folk-song idiom. This complete and authoritative collection includes an earlier version of The Banks of Green Willow, and a fragment of an Orchestral Fantasia. Work in progress in 1914 when Butterworth enlisted to serve in the Great War, it suggests the composer setting out in a bolder direction, perhaps inspired by the example of Vaughan Williams's A London Symphony. Orchestral parts are available for rental.

Mozart wrote this symphony in 1768 at the age of 12 dedicating it to the Benedictine monastery of Lambach. The structure of this score follows the rediscovered parts * the autograph has disappeared.

This valuable though seldom played early work from his Salzburg period contains the entire youthful charm of Mozart. It can be played without wind instruments whose parts are included in the strings. In this case, even the piano or harpsichord can be added as sound filler as was often done by Mozart himself when he conducted a work sitting at the respective instrument.

In this symphony, C.Ph.E. Bach appears as pioneer of the Viennese Classicism. Just in the first movement, we encounter a theme of individual form, a seven-bar (!) combination of syncopated tone repetition with smallsegmented triad splitting. The fact that the material of the whole movement is won from that, is a principle which was often used in the classical period.

Apart from his numerous instrumental works, Carl Stamitz left also four horn concertos. For reasons of the playing technique, the concerto was transposed down a semitone in the present edition. This work is especially characteristic of the personal style as well as of the epoch-mak-ing reformations by the Mannheim School.

The Symphony No. 1 (originally in five movements) was first performed in Budapest in 1889, but the premiere as well as two further performances in Hamburg and Weimar turned out to be a fiasco. After 1894 Mahler removed the Blumine-movement. Until the last performance under his direction in New York in 1909, Mahler made revisions again and again. This edition strives to present a, for the performance practice, reliable music text of the final extant version that in 1910 Mahler corrected and deemed accurate for the new print. The Editorial Report gives detailed information on the provenance and evaluation of the sources as well as authentic annotations on performance practice. Individual comments document editorial interventions and deviations from current editions. The cloth-bound volume PB 5661 contains next to the final version of the four-movement Symphony, the Blumine movement.
