The Girl I Left Behind Me first appears in 18th century Ireland, often known as Brighton Camp. It emigrated to the United States along with many other Anglo/Scots/Irish folk tunes and became a popular marching song for soldiers. During the American Civil War, soldiers in both the Confederate and Union armies sang it. A number of cultures have embraced this song, adding their own local lyrics. Perhaps the most widely popular composer of light classical music ever, Johann Strauss, Jr. wrote over 150 waltzes, bringing the form to perfection as an extended musical composition. The Blue Danube (the common English title of An der schonen blauen Donau---German for By the Beautiful Blue Danube), was composed in 1866 and was premiered in February of 1867. Joseph Haydn's so-called Paris Symphonies were composed in 1785 and 1786 for the masonic lodge “Société Olympique” in Paris, which ran a large orchestra and organised regular concerts. These six works are notable for their artful motivic work and playful wit. Haydn here pays tribute both to the discerning taste of the Paris audience and to the excellent abilities of the musicians in the orchestra. These symphonies rapidly became famous and popular throughout Europe, thanks to editions published variously in Paris, Vienna and London. In this Symphony in A major, composed in 1785, Haydn provides the flute with concertante solo passages in the Adagio which was perhaps a nod to the instrument’s popularity in France at the time. This study edition reproduces the musical text of the Haydn Complete Edition, which is a guarantor of the finest scholarship.
