New York Overture was commissioned by the New York Chamber Symphony and composed for the rich and bright sound that this orchestra reveals under Gerard Schwarz’s wonderfully buoyant and energetic leadership. Having worked with these intense artists many times before, I found it easy to imagine, in a single vision, a dramatic overture cast in a traditional and serious manner. My impressions and memories of New York provided a direct catalyst. Woven into the overture are a number of ‘hints’ derived from well-known melodies which have endured as popular romanticizations of New York’s manifold personality. Coupled with these ‘hints’ are my own Tin-Pan Alley and jazz experiences, presented and transformed throughout the melodic and harmonic fabric. Rhythmically, the New York Overture seeks to create perpetual motion and movement as a metaphor for what we see and encounter in the New York streets, with their intricate rhythmic patterns of pulsing energy. Listeners will, I hope, discover in it their own feelings and memories, aroused by the aura of this dazzling, varied, and yet monolithic city. —William Thomas McKinley (© 1990), from 12-13 May 1990 program and his notes. 2(1) 2 2 2; 2200; timp/perc, pno, hp; stgs Duration: 14' Composed: 1989 Published by: Notevole Music Publishing Performance materials available on rental:.

Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) composed his Piano Concerto No. 1 in 1858 and performed the work's debut in Hanover, Germany, in 1859, to mixed reviews. The work initially began as a sonata for two pianos, then a four-movement symphony. Under the counsel of friends Julius Otto Grimm and violinist Joseph Joachim, Brahms landed on a three-movement piano concerto. After its fifth performance in December 1861, with Clara Schumann as piano soloist, the work still received mixed audience reception. It has since grown in popularity and has been recognized as a masterpiece. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 4.2.0.0: Timp: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set): Solo Piano.

Commissioned by the first Sibelius Conductor's Competition held in Helsinki in May 1995, as an obligatory piece to be rehearsed by all the competitors, Arena was performed in its totality at the annual Avanti! Chamber Orchestra's festival in Porvoo (Finland). Thematic thinking has never been a main feature in Lindberg's music, but here horizontal lines (one would not yet dare to call them melodies) gain some independence, for example in ornamental figures and in the intense cello solo around the middle of the piece. Arena also reveals some clearly new material - Lindberg has talked about Beethoven-like formal thinking, referring to a passage where the sense of movement seems to accelerate to an extreme so that finally one perceives only a motionless surface. Another new element - which was already used to some extent at the warmly hovering ending of Aura - is the almost romantic sound world and the suspension of the harmonies in the final climax, which can make one think of Mahler and Berg, or Lindberg's grand predecessor and compatriot, Sibelius. This is the Score, published by Chester Music; the duration of the pieces is approximately 16 minutes.

The Blumine movement included in the original five-movement version of Mahler's Symphony No. 1 was long considered lost. Composed as early as 1884 for a theater piece, Mahler inserted it into the symphony as its second movement in 1888. After three performances, he turned his back on this Love Episode, calling the sentimental, gushing movement a youthful folly, and removed it. Mahler's Hamburg autograph score was only rediscovered in 1966. Benjamin Britten gave the Blumine movement a new hearing at the 1967 Aldeburgh Festival. The critical new edition is based for the first time on the autograph score, together with the meanwhile rediscovered score copy with Mahler's last revisions. The cloth-bound volume PB 5661 contains next to the final version of the four-movement Symphony, the Blumine movement.First edition based on the copy of the score revised by Mahler Hamburg 1893.

Niccolò Piccinni (1728–1800) was one of the most significant figures in Italian and French opera during the second half of the 18th century. His Diane et Endymion, a three-act tragédie lyrique based on the mythological tale of love between a goddess and a shepherd, was first performed in Paris in 1784. The overture reveals the composer’s mastery in capturing both the grandeur and intimacy of the drama. After a stately introduction, graceful melodies and lively contrasting sections with vibrant orchestration set the tone for an enchanting and emotional musical journey.

Joachim Raff's Fifth Symphony Lenore op. 177, composed in 1872, reveals the composer as a representative of the middle ground between Neo-German aesthetics and the symphonic tradition. It owes its name to G. A. Burger's ballade, which is the programmatic basis of the final movement. Using this literary model, Raff oriented himself to the Berlioz program symphonies and the Liszt symphonic-poem concept, on the one hand, but on the other, he let the three preceding movements follow traditional symphonic form. Raff conducted the Lenore symphony's premiere in December 1872 in a concert by the Furstliche Hofkapelle in Sondershausen. The concert went to his satisfaction, although the audience evidently did not know what to make of the work: [...] and the symphony [...] was played before this faintly musical party. Essentially for the greater glory of God and my edification, less for that of the said public, which seems to have been rather horrified by it. His friend Hans von Bulow had, however, a great pleasure in hearing the symphony the following year in Berlin. In her preface, the editor Iris Eggenschwiler provides detailed information about the work's genesis, documents Raff's ideas and intentions, and facilitates a comprehensive orientation within the historical context. Breitkopf & Hartel is now presenting for the first time with this symphony an orchestral work by Raff in a modern Urtext edition, thus also continuing its collaboration with the Joachim-Raff-Gesellschaft.In collaboration with the Joachim-Raff-Archiv Lachen (CH).

Three movements, 15:00 total. South Florida Classical Review called Setting Century ...ingeniously crafted. The score is an imaginative essay in orchestral rhythm and color. The initial section Ticking is based on a brief, repeated figure in the violins, like the machinery of a clock. Gradually larger melodic threads emerge. The piano imitates bells over long string lines in Tolling. As the winds and strings branch out to broader, more complex patterns, the overall effect is powerful. Dance-like themes give the entire orchestra a good workout in Streaming. An extended episode for winds exploits the individual instruments’ timbres in striking fashion. ~ Lawrence Budmen. 2(1) 22 2(1); 4231; timp, 2 perc, pno; stgs Duration: 15' Composed: 2004/16 Published by: Distributed Composer Performance materials available on rental only:.

Igor Stravinsky's musical setting of the Slavic fable The Firebird is one of the most ground-breaking orchestral works of the early 20th century. The reviews of the world premiere of the ballet at the Theatre National de l'Opera in Paris lauded Stravinsky's 'dazzling music in all shades of colour'; as a consequence, he composed two orchestral suites of his ballet. The version of 1919 is now published as a new edition with a modern notation and new orchestral material.

The present edition is based on all relevant sources. The preface sketches the work's genesis from the moment of its conception in Rome in late December 1879 (Yesterday, out in the streets, I heard a wonderful folksong that I will most certainly make use of.) to the first reviews, in which Tchaikovsky was accused of triviality and of having made an extremely unfortunate choice of themes. Yet this did nothing to hamper the worldwide success of the work, and Tchaikovsky's composer colleagues also culled ideas from it: a few years later, Tchaikovsky himself was the dedicatee of Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov's Capriccio espagnol. Having previously been granted the diploma of the Bologna Academy in December 2011, Maxwell Davies wrote his Concerto Accademico as both an expression of gratitude to the Regia Academia Filarmonico di Bologna and also in part 'a presentation of academic qualification, to justify this singular honour'. The work is scored for string quartet and string orchestra and is based on a plainsong chant, heard at the outset, associated with the Holy Spirit descending upon the disciples at Pentecost, and their subsequent speaking in tongues.
