A mysterious pizzicato pulse sets the tone in this sly scherzo while shadowy melodies evoke the wood elves. Dynamics ebb and flow throughout before the piece builds to its conclusion. With a technical focus on two-note slurs and G string notes, this piece provides some exciting technical challenges for young players, but students and orchestras will be drawn to the dramatic style and mischievous melodies. Far from Home is originally for solo cello based on my exploration of the use of Western instrumental and compositional techniques to express the emotional and cultural characteristics of Thai traditional music. This piece contains both lyrical and virtuosic passages that derived from the traditional Thai fiddle playing and Krao-nai style, which is considered to be among the most demanding styles for solo instruments. Although the musical expression and techniques used in this piece are somewhat different from the traditional Krao-nai style, it still convey the emotions and cultural references of that style. Far from Home was graciously commissioned by the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra with the generous support of Dr. Sugree Charoensook. It was given its first performance by Thai cellist Tapalin Charoensook, the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra, and Maestro Alfonso Scarano conducting, on August 22-23, 2014, at Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand.Far from Home is originally for solo cello based on my exploration of the use of Western instrumental and compositional techniques to express the emotional and cultural characteristics of Thai traditional music. Marche fatale is an incautiously daring escapade that may annoy the fans of my compositions more than my earlier works, many of which have prevailed only after scandals at their world premieres. My Marche fatale has, though, little stylistically to do with my previous compositional path; it presents itself without restraint, if not as a regression, then still as a recourse to those empty phrases to which modern civilization still clings in its daily utility music, whereas music in the 20th and 21st centuries has long since advanced to new, unfamiliar soundscapes and expressive possibilities. The key term is banality. As creators we despise it, we try to avoid it - though we are not safe from the cheap banal even within new aesthetic achievements. Many composers have incidentally accepted the banal. Mozart wrote Ein musikalischer Spass [A Musical Jape], a deliberately amateurishly miscarried sextet. Beethoven's Bagatellen op. 119 were rejected by the publisher on the grounds that few will believe that this minor work is by the famous Beethoven. Mauricio Kagel wrote, tongue in cheek, so to speak, Marsche, um den Sieg zu verfehlen [Marches for being Unvictorious], Ligeti wrote Hungarian Rock; in his Circus Polka Stravinsky quoted and distorted the famous, all too popular Schubert military march, composed at the time for piano duet. I myself do not know, though, whether I ought to rank my Marche fatale alongside these examples: I accept the humor in daily life, the more so as this daily life for some of us is not otherwise to be borne. In music, I mistrust it, considering myself all the closer to the profounder idea of cheerfulness having little to do with humor. However: Isn't a march with its compelling claim to a collectively martial or festive mood absurd, a priori? Is it even music at all? Can one march and at the same time listen? Eventually, I resolved to take the absurd seriously - perhaps bitterly seriously - as a debunking emblem of our civilization that is standing on the brink. The way - seemingly unstoppable - into the black hole of all debilitating demons: that can become serene. My old request of myself and my music-creating surroundings is to write a non-music, whence the familiar concept of music is repeatedly re-defined anew and differently, so that derailed here - perhaps? - in a treacherous way, the concert hall becomes the place of mind-opening adventures instead of a refuge in illusory security. How could that happen? The rest is - thinking.(Helmut Lachenmann, 2017)CD (Version for Piano):Nicolas Hodges CD Wergo WER 7393 2 Bibliography:Ich bin nicht ,,pietistisch verformt. Tchaikovsky's Hamburg Symphony in the Urtext
ISBN 9790004213698. 6.5 x 9 inches.
Like Hamlet Overture, originating at about the same time, Tchaikovsky's 5th symphony, composed in 1888, focuses on the human existential question: To be or not to be - triumph over fate or triumph of fate? The per aspera ad astra dramaturgy underlying the symphony culminates in triumphant certainty. If Tchaikovsky was initially euphoric, then severe self-doubts befell him after he conducted the premiere in St. Petersburg. These doubts demonstrably led him to make interpretative changes for the Hamburg performance in 1889, including a cut in the finale. Only with the extremely positive response to this performance did his doubts dispel. Nevertheless, Tchaikovsky himself never again conducted the 5th symphony. It was only posthumously established in the repertoire through Arthur Nikisch's commitment. The new edition's textual criticism takes into account besides the autograph and first edition also the first edition's orchestral parts, together with the piano arrangement produced from the autograph by Sergei Taneyev. In addition to thoroughly clarifying dynamics and articulation, the source comparison also corrected many errors and solved problematical passages, such as, for instance, the trombone entry in m. 372 of the finale. Considered, moreover, for the first time has been the composer's doubts about his work and its ambiguities, frequently successfully suppressed in the history of its performance and reception. Tchaikovsky's conductor's copy is unfortunately lost, hence his alterations made for the Hamburg performance are not precisely known. They have survived only indirectly through remarks that Willem Mengelberg left to posterity, for which he could draw on Tchaikovsky's conductor's score and oral references by the composer's brother Modest. So, anyone wishing to deal seriously with the work's certainties will not be able to do so in the future without having also to deal with its uncertainties.Tchaikovsky's Hamburg Symphony in the Urtext.

This publication presents under one cover various short works for sundry orchestral scorings. Larghetto for Orchestra is MacMillan's orchestration (2017) of his celebrated Miserere for a cappella mixed choir (2009), a setting in Latin of Psalm 51, 'Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy great mercy', the penitential text famously set in the 17th century by Gregorio Allegri. The Larghetto orchestration was commissioned by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in celebration of Manfred Honeck's 10th Anniversary as Music Director. Memoire imperiale is one of a number of variations on General John Reids march tune Old Gaul commissioned from Scottish composers to mark the centenary in 1994 of the Faculty of Music at Edinburgh University. The Faculty was established following a bequest by General Reid (1721-1807), a former law student at the University and a renowned flute player and composer of marches for the BritishArmy, and he asked that an annual concert be organised at which one or more of his compositions be played. Composed in 2012 for the Britten Sinfonia, One is a monody in which a single line is passed around the instruments, painting it with different colours as it emerges and develops. Lasting only a few minutes, its singularity is maintained until blossoming in the lastfew bars. For Sonny (2011, orch 2013) and Ein Lamplein verlosch (2018, orch 2019) are short, private memorial tributes originally for string quartet and here rescored for string orchestra. Hirta was composed in 2016 as part of Deccas The Lost Songs of St Kilda project. Nearly a century ago, the last 36 residents were evacuated from the most remote part of the British Isles, St Kilda, an isolated archipelago off the beautiful and rugged western coast of Scotland. After 86 years, the music of St Kilda was rediscovered, recorded in a Scottish care home by Trevor Morrison, an elderly man who had been taught piano by an inhabitant of St Kilda. The songs were 'reimagined' for the Decca album by various.

Symphony No. 8 for Orchestra (2011) by Per Norgard. Premiered on September 19, 2013 by the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra and John Storgards. Programme note: The first movement opens with sculptural rising and falling scales. Visually the sound may call to mind, say, spirals or ziggurats (temple towers). Brisk music leads to the climax of the movement. The second movement is slow and sensually melodious and has three interludes of greater timbral melodic action. The third movement begins very restlessly but towards the climax the tempo gradually begins to accelerate. An oscillating pianissimomurmur ends the movement - and the symphony. Symphony no. 8 is commissioned by Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra and is besides the Orchestra dedicated to the conductor John Storgards. Per Norgard (2012).

Here's a medley of hits from the animated film Smallfoot featuring This Is My World composed by Heitor Pereiera along with Wonderful Life, and Perfection, both with words and music by Wayne Kirkpatrick and Karey Kirkpatrick---that is sure to challenge your string orchestra. The catchy melodies and intricate rhythms are shared by all sections, and, as wonderfully arranged by Andrew H. Dabczynski, can be enhanced by optional percussion and piano. While optional, these parts will contribute tremendously to the rock texture, rhythmic drive, and overall effect of the piece. The optional percussion parts are constructed simply enough so that doubling players conceivably can be drawn from the string sections. Your audiences will find themselves tapping their own smallfeet along with the orchestra! This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

The Overture to Ruy Blas, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's last overture, was not composed as an autonomously conceived score, but as the opening piece of a stage work. Nevertheless, its immediate success at the Leipzig first performance in 1839, as well as the fact that no further contributions to Victor Hugo's drama followed from Mendelssohn's pen soon made it well known in the concert hall. The work's special history, including several arrangements occasioned by various performances, led to the fact that the overture had its largest circulation in the version of the posthumous first edition on which this edition is also based.First printing posthumously 1851 (Rietz).

Joseph Haydn's so-called Paris Symphonies were composed in 1785 and 1786 for the masonic lodge “Société Olympique†in Paris, which ran a large orchestra and organised regular concerts. These six works are notable for their artful motivic work and playful wit. Haydn here pays tribute both to the discerning taste of the Paris audience and to the excellent abilities of the musicians in the orchestra. These symphonies rapidly became famous and popular throughout Europe, thanks to editions published variously in Paris, Vienna and London. It is a matter of debate whether or not this Symphony no. 85, “La Reine†(“The Queenâ€), was really given its nickname because it was the favorite symphony of Marie-Antoinette. The name certainly did not stem from Haydn, but it was nevertheless stated on the title page of the edition published by Imbault in Paris as early as 1788. This study edition reproduces the musical text of the Haydn Complete Edition, which is a guarantor of the finest scholarship. An informative preface and a brief critical report make this handy score an ideal companion for all Haydn fans, both present and future.

Three movements, 15:00 total. South Florida Classical Review called Setting Century ...ingeniously crafted. The score is an imaginative essay in orchestral rhythm and color. The initial section Ticking is based on a brief, repeated figure in the violins, like the machinery of a clock. Gradually larger melodic threads emerge. The piano imitates bells over long string lines in Tolling. As the winds and strings branch out to broader, more complex patterns, the overall effect is powerful. Dance-like themes give the entire orchestra a good workout in Streaming. An extended episode for winds exploits the individual instruments’ timbres in striking fashion. ~ Lawrence Budmen. 2(1) 22 2(1); 4231; timp, 2 perc, pno; stgs Duration: 15' Composed: 2004/16 Published by: Distributed Composer Performance materials available on rental only:.

Heroes Among Us by Gary Fagan is an original overture-style work for string orchestra that was inspired by the many people who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make sure many school children who could not go to school received at least two hot meals each day throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. School bus drivers and cafeteria workers put in long hours to prepare meals and deliver them to students who otherwise may have gone hungry during the week. While teachers, nurses, doctors, etc. received accolades during the months when schools were out of session, many adults stepped in to take care of other necessities to ensure the well-being of the students they served. Hardcover full score. Text in Polish, German, and English. This edition of the works of Mieczyslaw Karlowicz is based on critically examined sources. It includes all his compositions. The aim of the edition is to present the composer's original text as authentically as possible. This is not an easy task. The source materials of Karlowicz's music are very diverse in nature. Apart from most of the songs, the composer prepared for printing and published in his lifetime the following: Serenade for Strings Op. 2, Prelude and Fugue Op. 5, Concerto in A major for Violin and Orchestra Op. 8, Returning Waves Op. 9 and Eternal Songs Op. 10. Being highly experienced in writing for a symphony orchestra, and knowledgeable in the modern method of instrumentation in the neoromantic style, he prepared his scores with great care. The remaining symphonic poems were not published before the composer's death; and the 'Rebirth' Symphony, the manuscript of which miraculously survived the ravages of World War II, was issued only in 1993, as part of the present Complete Works edition. During this war the autographs of the most compositions by Karlowicz, including all his symphonic poems (except for The Sorrowful Tale), were lost. The present publication, therefore, is based as a rule on the first editions, compared with extant autographs or authorized copies of the scores. The amendments of misprints or self-evident mistakes on the part of the composer are not indicated graphically in the text but referred to in the Editorial Notes.
