Far from Home is originally for solo cello based on my exploration of the use of Western instrumental and compositional techniques to express the emotional and cultural characteristics of Thai traditional music. This piece contains both lyrical and virtuosic passages that derived from the traditional Thai fiddle playing and Krao-nai style, which is considered to be among the most demanding styles for solo instruments. Although the musical expression and techniques used in this piece are somewhat different from the traditional Krao-nai style, it still convey the emotions and cultural references of that style. Far from Home was graciously commissioned by the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra with the generous support of Dr. Sugree Charoensook. It was given its first performance by Thai cellist Tapalin Charoensook, the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra, and Maestro Alfonso Scarano conducting, on August 22-23, 2014, at Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand.Far from Home is originally for solo cello based on my exploration of the use of Western instrumental and compositional techniques to express the emotional and cultural characteristics of Thai traditional music. Filled with energy and vitality, this work is reminiscent of the past. After the composer gave careful consideration to the heritage of South Carolina, he quickly realized that past lifestyles relied on walking much more than now. As a result, he composed a sturdy and spirited walking tune, and modeled it after the style of old English Folk Ballads. The result is a composition that communicates a unique energy and sentiment all its own.

In 1998, at the end of the 20th century, Breitkopf & Hartel started the publication of the Complete Edition, which is made possible thanks to the cooperation of the various Sibelius publishers. The Editors (Helsinki University Library and The Sibelius Society of Finland) and the Editorial Committee (Chairman: Timo Virtanen, Helsinki) believe that the volumes of JSW will provide the basis for a now conception of the creative work of Jean Sibelius.Reviews: One immediately recognizes the towering production quality of these volumes - a point that can be extended to all volumes thus far published in the set. The music is a joy to read; and the lucidity and thoroughness of the texts … are models of scholarly editions, and should be required reading for all bibliography and music-editing courses. … In sum, the JSW is a remarkable project: the scholarship is impeccable, the music scores and texts are simply a joy to study. Edward Jurkowski, Notes December 2011: 442-443At the back of this magnificent book are pages of critical commentary on a bar-by-bar analysis of an endless supply of musical notation requiring interpretation by the editor. … For the general, non-musically trained, purchaser of the edition there is the magisterial introduction to read, and fascinating reading it is. Edward W. Clark, Sibelius Society Newsletter 2009 The Sibelius pieces, however, are a revelation. I opened this magnificently produced volume - complete with multilingual critical report and generous facsimiles of original manuscripts - expecting Grieg-style quasi-nationalistic character pieces, and was instead presented with an incredible array of styles, textures, harmonic languages and levels of difficulty. Chris White, Piano Professional Summer 2009: 2This is not only a scholarly edition of one of the composer's major works, it is also a model for the philological editing of music in general. … JSW has chosen to have the emendations reflected in two places, in certain cases even in three: as graphic indications in the music text, in prose form in the critical commentary, and sometimes also in the form of a warning footnote on the music page. There can be no doubt that such a procedure is very user-friendly, but it disturbs the appearance of the music and may mislead the user into thinking that there are two or more equally valid readings. Niels Krabbe, Fontes Artis Musicae 54/2, 2007: 248 Editorial standards are high throughout, and maintain a careful balance between the competing demands of practical exigency and the need to provide as much scholarly evidence of variants as possible. The critical commentaries provide concise and effective descriptions of the sources and, where appropriate, information on compositional genesis and historical context. The introduction to each volume provide useful background information on historical reception, including much new material not previously brought to light in Tawaststjerna's biography. Daniel M. Recognised as one of the major musical figures of his time, Ralph Vaughan Williams incidental music for Gilbert Murray's English translation of Euripides Iphigenia in Tauris is now available for purchase. A preview of the production appearing in The Globe remarked of Vaughan Williams musical setting: This music is no experiment in style. It would seem, rather, as though the composer had disclaimed all styles and all schools, and found direct inspiration in the material of the poet's inspiration, and the result is something of undeniable beauty. .

The Stranger is titled after the novel of the same name by the French existentialist philosopher and writer Albert Camus. The piece seems to capture some of the general mood of the story, with its underlying feeling of melancholy and sense of inevitability. Since the music is written in an even eighth-note style, with either a contemporary classical or a Latin rhythmic feeling, the string section is not required to phrase in a jazz or swing style. The use of light percussion rather than a drumset makes the arrangement ideal for acoustic performance without amplification.

One of Haydn's most famous symphonic movements, this selection will give your students a chance to develop a refined, Classic style of playing. It seems like Haydn included everything in this movement---a delicately beautiful main theme, wild, minor-keyed outbursts, military percussion, and a solo trumpet fanfare. No wonder the London audiences went crazy over it! Arranged with the young orchestra in mind, all string parts are in first position. A great introduction to a too-often neglected style.

The word steampunk refers to a genre of science fiction that features steam-powered machinery. Works of fiction in this style are most often set in the 19th century British Victorian era or the American Wild West. Machines and technology found in the works of Jules Verne and H.G. Wells would be good examples of steampunk-style inventions. The piece itself follows no specific narrative, but rather is meant to capture the spirit and mood of this hearty, highly imaginative, industrial-based movement. Young string musicians will enjoy performing this heavy rock style piece because it utilizes an aggressive style and mixed tonality similar to 'their' music that they listen to for fun. The concept behind the title of this piece is that, although we sometimes move dully through our daily routines, it is good to take time to appreciate the individual moments that make up our lives, like a child does the first time they experience something. All parts are in first position with few accidentals or difficult bowing patterns. At the same time, this piece will challenge your group with its independent voicings and syncopated, interlocking rhythms. This piece would add variety to any school concert, and would fit nicely in a festival program, especially one that utilized several different genres. (3:40).
