Composer's Note Once, we had a joint conception to create a concert telling a life story. The premiere was planned to take place on the Acropolis in Athens. It was intended to be a large event, a hybrid of a mystery play and an opera. Krzysztof Kieslowski would be the director, Krzysztof Piesiewicz was responsible for the script, and I was planning to compose the music. We thought it might be the first of a series of musical performances, to be developed in various interesting places around the world in the next few years. But it was life that authored a different ending: Krzysztof Kieslowski died in March of 1996. The first part of Requiem for My Friend is meant as a farewell to Krzysztof Kieslowski. I dedicate this music to him. Zbigniew Preisner.

It was only shortly after the 5th Symphony that Beethoven completed the Pastoral Symphony. The two formed a complementary work pair, consigned together to a patron in June 1808, publicly premiered in Vienna in December 1808, and published by Breitkopf & Hartel in the spring of 1809. During this period, Beethoven revised the symphony several times. Only in the course of preparing for publication did Beethoven send Breitkopf & Hartel a letter, together with a list of corrections, disclosing the title that he desired, Pastoral Symphony or recollections of country life. More an expression of feeling than painting. The Pastoral with its tone-painting elements gives evidence of Beethoven's closeness to nature, characterizing in five movements his various experiences and images of nature. Based on the music text of the Beethoven Complete Edition, the new performance material of this recently published edition presents the current, authoritative status of Beethoven research for this work.

Anton Bruckner (1824-1896) completed the 1st version of his Mass No. 3 in F minor in 1863, as Otto Kitzler was introducing him to the music of Richard Wagner, the composer he would emulate for the rest of his life. John Herbeck, who conducted the initial rehearsals for its premiere at the Augustinerkirch on June 16, 1872, warmly declared that it stood beside Beethoven's Missa Solemnis in greatness. Bruckner, often self-critical as a composer, went on to revise the work no less than four times until it was finally published it in 1894. More often heard today in the concert hall than in the church, the sprawling, hour-long work is admired today for its powerful directness. This critical edition was created in 1944 for the Bruckner Gesamtausgabe by Robert Maria Haas.

Completed while Ritchie was Composer-in-Residence with the Dunedin Sinfonia in 1993, Boum is named after a mysterious echo heard by characters in E.M. Forster's novel A Passage to India. The echo comes to symbolise the mysteries of life and death, and was a starting point to a general theme of existentialism and human struggle that pervades Ritchie's symphony. An eclectic range of influences can be heard across Boum's four movements. A languid, Eastern-sounding violin theme in the first movement is influenced by gamelan music, referencing the pelog scale. Inspired by traditional music of the Cook Islands, the jaunty second movement is a vigorous scherzo dominated by the sound of log-drum and tom-toms. The third movement is a lament for the victims of the Bosnian war, its evocative opening inspired by the wailing of a Maori karanga, while the fourth movement can be thought of as a symphonic dance, its pulse and motivic ideas reminiscent of rock music.

Rich with kaleidoscopic images, Papanui Road gives a vivid 'snapshot' of bustling central Christchurch during the 1950s—one that encompasses not only the cityscape but much of the composer's own experience and spirit. The composer writes: Having lived near Papanui Road for most of my life—having cycled, driven and walked on it, having shopped, eaten and prayed in or on it, I feel at home there. As young people say, it has 'vibes' for me. It certainly has memories... This concert overture tries to hint at the bustle, the vitality and the peace of Papanui Road; an impression rather than a picture... For all its pictorialism this concert overture is a serious, even a solemn and nostalgic work. Its aim is to evoke memories and the atmosphere of an important, busy thoroughfare in the composer's home town.

The Chanson de Nuit was originally entitled Evensong, though it is difficult to discern any religiosity in the work. And although published in 1897, scholars suggest that these works may have been written in the 1880's. The contrast of the two melodies which Elgar then intertwines yield a satisfying short work, especially with the composer's fine Orchestration.Elgar published the Chanson de Nuit - and its partner, Chanson de Matin - at the time of his life when he was also creating the Enigma Variations and The Dream of Gerontius. This work was originally created as a Violin and Piano duet, but Elgar then Orchestrated the work and it was presented at the Proms. Sincethen, other arrangements have been created.

Symphony No.5 (Childhood) marks somewhat of an evolution in Ritchie's writing, as he further embraces the minimalist techniques that have influenced his previous work. Beautiful, expressive solo passages emerge, particularly for oboe, while elsewhere the orchestra becomes swirling and thunderous as if mimicking the chaotic action of a packed playground, creating an affecting portrait of this magical first stage of life.

Of all his symphonies, Mahler gave the Fourth, his favorite and problem child, his most particular attention. The Heavenly Life, a humoresque composed in 1892 for soprano and piano, which he already wanted to use in the final movement of the Third Symphony under the title What the Child Tells Me, ultimately became the nucleus and final movement of the Fourth. Even after publication in 1901, Mahler kept repeatedly refining the orchestration. His maxim not without my retouching led to a whole series of revised reprints. It is probably no coincidence that Mahler performed especially the Fourth Symphony in his last two New York concerts in February 1911, using this opportunity to review once again the score and parts. This performance material with his retouching served as the main source for the new edition. Furthermore, included for the first time were corrections and annotations in conjunction with performances of the Fourth, which Mahler entered into the scores of conductors such as Mengelberg and Wickenhauser.
