Chorale settings form a central part of Telemann's oeuvre. His 1754 setting of the church hymn Christus, der ist mein Leben, based on Melchoir Vulpius' melody from the Hamburg Hymnal, is especially well-suited to display his mastery in depicting the words of the chorale. The so-called Ausfullungsbass (a vocal bass added to the principal bass in tutti passages) was probably necessitated by the acoustical properties of Hamburg's churches. This is the first Urtext edition of this highly successful chorale setting which is based on Georg Philipp Telemann Musical Works. The score contains a realisation of the continuo part.* First Urtext edition based on Georg Philipp Telemann Musical Works* An attractive addition to the repertoire with a view to the Telemann Year 2017* Bilingual Foreword (Ger/Eng)* Uncluttered idiomatic piano reduction.

While Vol. 2 contains exercises on three-part playing, Vol. 3 contains exercises on four and five-part playing as well as studies on demanding trio playing. Each learning stage is accompanied by pedal exercises and tips on articulation, touch, interpretation, registration and organ specifications - a valuable compendium for every organist.

Mendelssohn's setting of Psalm 98 was written in a few weeks to satisfy a commission in his new position as general music director of Prussia and was premiered by the Berlin Cathedral Choir on 1 January 1844. As he neither released the work for publication nor produced a vocal score, his psalm setting did not appear in print until after his death. For this edition the authoritative Mendelssohn specialist John Michael Cooper drew primarily on the autograph score with its many subsequent corrections and amendments. In this way it differs from many other editions, which tend to treat the autograph as a subordinate source. Rounding off the edition are an informative Foreword and a detailed Critical Commentary. The piano reduction is based on the first printed edition, published by F. Kistner and Evers & Co. in 1851.

Anton Bruckner's Te Deum - a high point in the composer's output and one of the most important works of the sacred choral repertoire in the 19th century - is now available in a modern, scholarly edition. The Carus edition draws on both the two sources regarded as important, the autograph score and the first printed edition, with careful consideration given to variant readings. And so a music text has been prepared which reflects the composer's intentions as closely as possible. Great emphasis has been placed on a clear-to-read layout of the full score pages, as well as excellent legibility for the parts, which are available on sale. With current performance practice in mind, the clarinet parts are notated in B flat instead of A, corresponding with the first printed edition. The vocal score has been newly prepared to reflect current practical requirements. As an economical alternative, a chorus score is available. Bruckner's Te Deum is also available in carus music, the choir app. The app contains the music and a recording, as well as a coach to help with learning each choral part. In preparation: arrangement of the Te Deum for soli, choir, brass quintet and organ. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.2719000.

Following its edition of the beautiful Messe Sainte Cecile by Gounod in an arrangement for Coro SA and organ (CV 27.025), Carus presents a further sacred work by this composer: his Te Deum for soli, choir, two harps and two organs (choir organ and great organ). As Peter Kaiser, the editor, has expressed in his foreword, this work from 1886 realizes a strict, almost ascetic musical language, an inward awe and praise of God.. Charles Gounod composed this Requiem under the impact of the death of his four-year-old grandson, Maurice. According to information handed down, while finishing the details of this work he was overtaken by death. It was published posthumously in various constellations by his pupil, Henri Busser, but the only complete version from the pen of Gounod is the version for large orchestra, which is published here for the first time in a critical edition. Gounod's Requiem, unlike many contemporary settings of the Mass of the Dead, is not characterized by darkness and terror. Rather, with all of its trepidation - expressed through a marked chromaticism - an atmosphere of hopeful expectation, of trust in the grace and equity of the divine judge predominates. This confidence finds its expression in the choice of the fundamental key of C major, which is rather unusual for a requiem. The work was given an impressive performance on the occasion of the first anniversary of Gounod's death in the Parisian church of Sainte-Madeleine under the direction of Gabriel Fauré and it was highly acclaimed by the contemporary press. Beethoven described his Missa solemnis as his greatest work several times, a work which, coming from the heart, was to touch and move audiences. The surviving sources enable us to recognize how intensively and how long he worked on the composition in order to give what he felt was adequate expression to the text. In its length and musical demands, the Missa solemnis goes far beyond typical liturgical settings, and the premiere took place, for good reason, in a concert hall. The chorus plays a key structural role in the work, and in the process has to master some extremely demanding sections. The leading Beethoven expert Ernst Herttrich has produced an Urtext edition based on the available sources, and reflecting the latest state of scholarship. The Mass with Christmas hymns, Missa carminum is available from Carus in a orchestra version and in a version for choir and organ. The unique feature of this work is that each movement of the Ordinary employs a well-known Christmas hymn as an instrumental cantus firmus. In the score the text of each hymn has been included in the appropriate passage, so that the Christmas signature tune may be performed vocally, for example, by a one-part children's choir. Reprint of the first edition. Friedrich Spitta recommended to Herzogenberg that he set Gerhard Tersteegen's text Gott ist Gegenwartig on the occasion of that poet's 200th birthday. Besides the obbligato organ, Herzogenberg restricted the instrumentation to strings, two trumpets, three trombones and timpani, and thus achieved a majestic quality which corresponds to the text. When Joseph Haydn assumed the position as music director of the Court of Esterhazy in 1766, following the death of his predecessor, Gregor Joseph Werner, he began by composing his first and most extensive Missa solemnis. The title Missa Cellensis (later also known as the Cecilian Mass) and the date of an autograph score suggest that this work was probably commissioned by Prince Nicolaus Esterhazy for the 600th anniversary of the pilgrimage church Mariazell located in Styria. With regard to the scoring as well as form, this Mass is still in the tradition of the late baroque number mass. In contrast to previous mixed versions based on various sources, the new edition follows the authentic (original) version using the most reliable sources. This work is now available in carus music, the choir app. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.4060400.

According to Muhly, this composition is an attempt to set the text of the Latin Mass using a completely different harmonic structure from his previous works. The rhythms and melodies can be seen as circular, rather than linear, becoming evident from both the Organ parts and the choir's initial phrases. As the piece progresses, the dynamic tempo enhances the interplay of all parts, all the while hinting at Stravinskian inspirations.

The names of Michael Haydn's masses are associated either with a specific commission or with the composition's dedicatee. Thus, Haydn composed the Missa in honorem Sti. Gotthardi, also known as the Admont Mass, for the Admont Abbey located in the region of Styria, Austria, where Gotthard Kuglmayr was the Abbot. The mass combines formal concentration with liturgical function. The songlike melody, the unity of the motivic material, and the balanced harmony of solemn and lyrical passages show how intensively Haydn concerned himself with the genre. Due to its length and its orchestration the mass can be considered a type of missa solemnis. Fugues and fugal movements are completely missing from the Missa Admontis as is any kind of contrapuntal (including imitative) composition. In so doing, Haydn assured that the required understanding of the liturgical text would be achieved. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.5453000.
