Heinrich Schutz's Osterdialog (Dialogo per la Pascua) SWV 443 for four voices and basso continuo is based on an episode from the Gospel of St John, in which the risen Jesus appears before Mary Magdalene in front of the empty grave. Schutz had also composed a setting of this scene shortly before in 1623 in his Auferstehungshistorie [Resurrection History]. For the first time this edition contains an attempt to reconstruct the extensive final chorus of the work, which is missing except for the basso continuo part, by Helmut Lauterwasser. This musical jewel by Schutz represents a valuable addition to the musical repertoire for Easter, which is smaller than the Passiontide repertoire. 20.443/05: full score without cover and without final chorus 20.443/06: choral score, only final chorus. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2044300.

Fantasy-Variations on Two Themes (2017) for organ was written for Heinrich Christensen in celebration of his significant 2017 birthday. The musical material for the work comprises two different themes. The first is a short melody by the Danish composer Carl Nielsen (1865-1931). (It was a sketch originally intended for inclusion in, but ultimately left out of, Nielsen's late organ work 29 Little Preludes.) This theme represents Heinrich's native Denmark. The second theme is the American folk-gospel hymn Angel Band. This theme represents Heinrich's adopted American homeland. It serves also as a remembrance of our dear mutual friend Harry Lyn Huff (1952-2016), for whom the tune was a particular favorite. Both these themes are developed freely in a set of alternating fantasy-variations. The opening variation begins with a dramatic pedal solo before quoting both themes. The second variation is a lyric setting based on the Nielsen melody. The third is a jubilant hornpipe on Angel Band. The fourth is an aria on a transformation of the Nielsen melody. The fifth is a gigue-toccata on Angel Band. The sixth is an atmospheric contemplation: lush chords in the manuals move slowly and hint at Angel Band while the Nielsen melody is heard for the first time in its complete original form on a high pedal stop. The seventh and final variation begins with a brief evocation of the harmonies of the late Daniel Pinkham (a mentor to both Heinrich and me) before going on to return dramatically and jubilantly to the opening music, bringing together both themes again in a bold conclusion. Oktober 1483 in Ravensburg (Wurttemberg) geboren. Orto starb 1529 in Nivelles.

The present publication finally closes the gap in the availability of the three church oratorios of Heinrich von Herzogenberg (1843-1900). With this late work, which he considered his most important, Heinrich von Herzogenberg set the musical high point of the 15th Conference of the German Church Song Association in Strasbourg (1899), and also of his entire career. The celebration of the harvest provides an interesting look into the stylistic diversity of church music at the end of the 19th century, and shows the composer's aptitude for dramatic presentation in a special way.

(Lothar Graap).

Heinrich Scheidemann is regarded as one of the most influential organists of the 17th century. His most significant achievement lies within his further developing of his teacher J. P. Sweelinck's chorale arrangements into a wide-ranging chorale fantasia primarily to display in full the organ's sound. The present volume constitutes a complete edition of all nine Chorale Fantasias based on Lutheran chorales that, except for one, are extant as individual works. The authenticity of six fantasias is considered certain, with the attribution of the three anonymously transmitted works being based on the source situation and style. The repertoire as a whole provides an insight into the progressive development of the chorale fantasia and concurrently represents Scheidemann's three main creative phases.

Among the numerous Requiem settings of the 19th century, only very few are scored for male voices. Although several compositions (by, amongst others, Max Reger and Peter Cornelius) are designated 'Requiem', these are usually only single-movement works, not settings of the entire text of the ordinary. To date, only four complete settings for male choir - by Luigi Cherubini, Franz Liszt, Hugo Kaun and Lorenzo Perosare - are known. With the first edition of the Requiem by Johann Christian Heinrich Rinck for solo voices, male choir and organ, a further work is being made available for performance. Rinck, celebrated as the Rhenish Bach and as a worldwide famous composer, wrote it in 1836.
