As its title indcates, this is a miniature symphony, its structure compacted as much as possible. The classical form is respected, dwon to the smallest details, so that the various development sections lead to a recapitulation of the two themes and to a more asservative conclusion. Throughout the work the style is extremely sparse and straightforward. The nostalgia expressed by the theme of the second movement leads us towards effects of perspective that modify the light thrown on the melody, at first distand and soon more insistent, more dominant, before dying away in the gentle mist. The third movement is somewhat facetious and sly. Despite its brilliantly luminous progress, the ending is nostalgic, whimsical and, once more, humorous.

Josef Gabriel Rheinberger dedicated his 9th Organ Sonata (composed in May 1885) to Alexandre Guilmant, the indefatigable concertizing virtuoso who had already given the first Paris performance of Rheinberger's 1st Organ Concerto (in F major, op. 137). With opulent harmonies, conspicuously frequent tempo changes, and chords which are a true delight when played on a Cavaille-Coll organ, the rhapsodic Fantasie at the beginning of the 3rd movement certainly lives up to its name. The separate edition is taken from the Rheinberger Complete Edition.

As well as 20 organ sonatas and seven collections of stand-alone organ pieces with opus numbers, Rheinberger composed a whole range of smaller works for organ methods or organ collections for his favorite instrument, mainly at the request of colleagues and friends. The posthumously compiled collection of ten smaller organ pieces WoO 25 brings together a series of interesting pieces from the years 1854 to 1896. It includes one of just two chorale settings by Rheinberger, the prelude on “Wenn ich einmal soll scheidenâ€. With short trios, preludes and fugues in different keys, the collection is particularly suitable for use in worship, but also for teaching. ?Jehan Alain (1911-1940) was a French organist and composer. His Litanies for Organ was composed in 1937 and is a sublime addition to the instrument's repertoire. Alain studied with Organ virtuosos, Guilmant and Vierne and was primarily an organist and composer of religious music. Whilst at the Paris Conservatoire, he won many prizes and his composition catalogue comprises some 140 works. Alain's Litanies is his most famous work and is prefaced with the text; ??When, in its distress, the Christian soul can find no more words to invoke God's mercy, it repeats endlessly the same litany....for reason has reached its limit; only faith can take one further...?? From lively and comical pieces, to sensitive and unexpected works, Alain's pieces are diverse in musicality. Moreover, the composer exploits Organ techniques, making Litanies an exciting and varied piece for advanced level organists.andrdquo.

Hermann Schroeder (1904-1984) ranks among the major German organ composers of the 20th century, being an excellent organist himself. Many of his more than 100 organ works deal with themes of the Gregorian chorale. The chorale's modal diatonicism which is freer and different than the later major-minor tonality establishes a perfect symbiosis with the free tonality of the contemporary composer. In the five-movement chorale partita, the more than 1,000 years old Mixolydian Whitsun Sequence of Hrabanus Maurus (9th century) is used in an imaginative and formally varied way: as a virtuoso toccata, in the second movement 'ostinato' as a strict trio setting over a seven-bar ostinato in the pedal, as a capriciously playful 'bicinium', and as a meditative, harmonically appealing 'arioso'. The fifth movement (fantasia ricercare) displays brilliant full-handed chords and virtuoso passages as well as a fugato in the middle section. A rewarding concert piece for Whitsun, with an excellent possibility of virtuoso interpretation and colourful registration.

Composed by Jehan Alain, Three Pieces is a set of upper intermediate / advanced works for organ, with pedal-use. The first piece, ?Variations sur un theme de Clement Jannequin (Variations on a Clement Jannequin's Tune), should be played?in the same way as Couperin's Preludes: freshly and softly. It contains four distinctive parts: Affetuoso, Maggiore, Fuggato and Grave. The second piece is called ?Le jardin suspendu (The hanging garden) and features three different parts that can't be played separately. The last piece, Litanies, is quite religious and consists of the repetition of lamentations. Its introduction in vivo is played only by the right hand, then followed by a?Lirico ma sempre vivo part. These are followed by switches between the main tempo and some vivacissimo parts, sounding declamatory. This third piece ends really harmoniously. Jehan Alain is a French organist who became famous with his Suite for Organ. Student of Marcel Dupre and Roger Ducasse among others, he kept composing all his life. One of his most famous international pieces is Litanies.

Heinrich Scheidemann is regarded as one of the most influential organists of the 17th century. His most significant achievement lies within his further developing of his teacher J. P. Sweelinck's chorale arrangements into a wide-ranging chorale fantasia primarily to display in full the organ's sound. The present volume constitutes a complete edition of all nine Chorale Fantasias based on Lutheran chorales that, except for one, are extant as individual works. The authenticity of six fantasias is considered certain, with the attribution of the three anonymously transmitted works being based on the source situation and style. The repertoire as a whole provides an insight into the progressive development of the chorale fantasia and concurrently represents Scheidemann's three main creative phases.

A range of highly effective textures and atmospheric harmonies takes us on a journey towards a gloriously affirmative D major ending.

Charles Gounod composed this Requiem under the impact of the death of his four-year-old grandson, Maurice. According to information handed down, while finishing the details of this work he was overtaken by death. It was published posthumously in various constellations by his pupil, Henri Busser, but the only complete version from the pen of Gounod is the version for large orchestra, which is published here for the first time in a critical edition. Gounod's Requiem, unlike many contemporary settings of the Mass of the Dead, is not characterized by darkness and terror. Rather, with all of its trepidation - expressed through a marked chromaticism - an atmosphere of hopeful expectation, of trust in the grace and equity of the divine judge predominates. This confidence finds its expression in the choice of the fundamental key of C major, which is rather unusual for a requiem. The work was given an impressive performance on the occasion of the first anniversary of Gounod's death in the Parisian church of Sainte-Madeleine under the direction of Gabriel Fauré and it was highly acclaimed by the contemporary press. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2731500.

The second instalment of the three volume collection of Zinck’s complete keyboard music contains the printed sonatas which followed his enormously successful 1783 set together with the first appearance in print of two sonatas from a manuscript source in the Royal Library, Copenhagen. The published sonatas show Zinck’s mastery of the styles of both C.P.E. Bach (his teacher) and Haydn, while the manuscript works are simpler in their technical demands, but include original fingering from the composer. All the sonatas in this volume would be effective on either clavichord or fortepiano.

Carl Fasch was notoriously reluctant to have his music made public and even asked that much of it should be destroyed. What remains, however, supports the view of the contemporary writer on music Johann Reichardt that Fasch was the true successor to C. P. E. Bach, with whom he shared keyboard duties for Frederick the Great. In this first volume of his complete keyboard works, the six sonatas, which appeared in print and were well regarded during the composer's lifetime, show him to be a minor master and an eloquent advocate for the eclectic expressive style then current in Berlin.
