'YinYang' is the union of polar opposites in Taoism. It is the same in the present work for trumpet and organ in which the two movements form a pair of opposites: 'Toccata' is a powerful, solid music piece that is rough around the edges, with staccato as essential form; 'Melisma' is a sweeping, light and round structure with legato as essential form. This polarity is as elementary as 'male and female'. This is why it is characteristic of the yin-yang symbol that the curved, melismatic line unites contrapuntally with the toccata-like rhythm so that a jubilant praise of wholeness - whether in the Christian or Taoist sense - can be heard. Henryk Mikolaj Gorecki's career spans more than 40 years, dating from the post-Stalinist era of the mid 1950s and embracing a catalogue of more than 70 acknowledged works. It was not, however, until the phenomenal success of his third symphony, Symphony of Sorrowful Songs Op 36, which brought the composer world-wide renown through its numerous performances and recordings, that his music reached an extended audience outside his native Poland. Since then the directness and emotional impact of his music have established him as one of the major figures of contemporary music.

The first piece “Sicut ros Hermon†(Psalm 133) meditates on the path God’s mercy takes, whereby the initial slow descending harmonic sequences develop into an emphatic song followed by a tender chorale-like coda. “Si sumpsero pennas aurorae†(Psalm 139) relates to a highly poetic, consolatory but also admonishing image of the psalm: As far as our wings may carry us, God’s hand will take hold of us. We cannot escape his mercy or his judgement. At the end of this striking movement the music conveys almost haptic moments; one can sense the mighty ‘hand’ by means of the tutti sound. Finally the music becomes as calm as at the start of this piece, though dialogue-like figurations convey repercussions of what was experienced and acknowledged.
