The cantata is one of the few surviving vocal works which Wilhelm Friedemann Bach composed during the eighteen years which he spent as organist and director of music at the Marktkirche in Halle (1746-1764). This cantata, published here for the first time in more than 250 years, was written to introduce the autumn sermons in 1752. A musically and technically demanding composition, it consists of two substantial choral movements, partly concertante and partly polyphonic, based on two biblical utterances. They surround a sensitive, while at the same time strictly contrapuntal, duet for soprano and alto with basso continuo in which God's sweet teaching for the soul is described as the true manna of the faithful, forming a link with the sermons which are to follow. In the compactness of the musical construction and its intensity of expression W. F. Bach was clearly following in the footsteps of his father in this work. Charles Villiers Stanford was an Irish composer, music teacher, and conductor. Stanford composed a substantial number of concert works, including seven symphonies, but his best-remembered pieces are his choral works for church performance, chiefly composed in the Anglican tradition. Admitted to Queens College, Cambridge with an Organ scholarship Stanford had written a substantial number of compositions, including vocal music, both sacred and secular, and orchestral works before getting involved with the university's Musical Society. While still an undergraduate, Stanford was appointed organist of Trinity College, Cambridge.
Part of the'Four Intermezzi Op. 189' Intermezzo On An Irish Air for Organ is based on the melody of the well-known 'Londonderry Air'. The traditional Irish tune was first collected in the mid 19th century by Jane Ross, and is recognised all around the world by the Irish Diaspora. Duration ca. 6:20.

Anton Bruckner's Te Deum - a high point in the composer's output and one of the most important works of the sacred choral repertoire in the 19th century - is now available in a modern, scholarly edition. The Carus edition draws on both the two sources regarded as important, the autograph score and the first printed edition, with careful consideration given to variant readings. And so a music text has been prepared which reflects the composer's intentions as closely as possible. Great emphasis has been placed on a clear-to-read layout of the full score pages, as well as excellent legibility for the parts, which are available on sale. With current performance practice in mind, the clarinet parts are notated in B flat instead of A, corresponding with the first printed edition. The vocal score has been newly prepared to reflect current practical requirements. As an economical alternative, a chorus score is available. Bruckner's Te Deum is also available in carus music, the choir app. The app contains the music and a recording, as well as a coach to help with learning each choral part. In preparation: arrangement of the Te Deum for soli, choir, brass quintet and organ. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2719000.

Carus published the original version of Bruckner's Te Deum for soloists, choir and large orchestra (Carus 27.190) in the fall of 2015. In order to make this work available for performance by smaller-sized ensembles [und einem weiteren Benutzerkreis zuganglich zu machen] Carus now presents it in an arrangement for brass quintet and organ. The brass parts are orientated essentially towards those in Bruckner's orchestral version, while the organ part follows the original string parts. [Damit kann nun auch unter eingeschrankten Bedingungen dieses grossartige Werk in einer adaquaten, stimmigen Form zur Auffuhrung gebracht werden.] As the voice parts (soloists and choir) in this reduced version are identical with those of the original the vocal score and choral score of the latter version can be used. This work is available (in the original version) in carus music, the choir app! Score available separately - see item CA.2719000.

Particularly during the early 1740s, Johann Sebastian Bach concentrated intensely on studying the compositional technique of strict vocal polyphony. As an inspiration, he studied the works of older masters, copying them and, for the most part, performing them as well. A set of single parts for the Missa canonica by Francesco Gasparini in an instrumentation by Bach were recently discovered in the collection of the former Ephoralbibliothek Weissenfels; some of the parts are in Bach's own handwriting. Gasparini was esteemed in Germany particularly as a master of elaborate counterpoint and audacious harmonic writing. Bach amended the music text with a view to certain aspects of performance practice, clearly following a very specific concept of sound organization. His interest in strict counterpoint was paralleled by a tangible re-orientation in Bach's own compositional technique at the beginning of the 1740s. Francesco Gasparini's Missa canonica therefore served as a practical model for the highly developed art of canon writing and the strict polyphony in Bach's late works, as we encounter them, for example, in the B minor Mass.

Johann Michael Haydn's oeuvre includes more than thirty works in Latin or German for two or three descants, composed for his dear choirboys of the Salzburg 'Kapellhaus'. The first setting of the ordinary in this series was the Missa Sancti Aloysii, composed in 1777. It was initially intended for the Commemoration of the Holy Innocents on 28 December, when the chapel boys celebrated their principal feast day. This exceptionally charming mass, characterized by a wonderfully effervescent joyfulness, is an insider's tip for anyone looking for new repertoire for three-part women's, girls' or boys' choir. By virtue of ist scoring, the mass is also eminently suitable for small-scale performances. Score and part available separately - see item CA.5425700.

Among the numerous Requiem settings of the 19th century, only very few are scored for male voices. Although several compositions (by, amongst others, Max Reger and Peter Cornelius) are designated 'Requiem', these are usually only single-movement works, not settings of the entire text of the ordinary. To date, only four complete settings for male choir - by Luigi Cherubini, Franz Liszt, Hugo Kaun and Lorenzo Perosare - are known. With the first edition of the Requiem by Johann Christian Heinrich Rinck for solo voices, male choir and organ, a further work is being made available for performance. Rinck, celebrated as the Rhenish Bach and as a worldwide famous composer, wrote it in 1836.

Marc-Antoine Charpentier's Magnificat H 78 was composed around 1690 for the Jesuits in Paris. No less than ten works by the composer, in differing vocal and instrumental scoring and form comprise this genre. In the present Magnificat H 78 for five voices (in which alto and bass also have solo roles), two flutes, strings and basso continuo, each of the individual movements contains its own expressive profile in sound. In 1726 Johann Sebastian Bach performed a series of cantatas by his Meiningen cousin Johann Ludwig, then continued this series with his own works, but remained faithful to the textual models used his cousin: a Meiningen cycle of texts by an unknown author from the early 18th century. All these texts share the characteristic of including two quotations from the bible: one from the Old Testament at the beginning, and another from the New Testament in the middle. These cantatas include Herr, deine Augen sehen nach dem Glauben BWV 102. The opening chorus in several sections is one of Bach's masterpieces of choral composition. The cantata is also one of those works on which Bach's later reputation was based: performances are documented from 1776 in Hamburg and in Berlin by Zelter's Sing-Akademie from 1813 onwards. In 1830 it was one of the very first cantatas by Bach to appear in print. Score available separately - see item CA.3110200.

Chorale settings form a central part of Telemann's oeuvre. His 1754 setting of the church hymn Christus, der ist mein Leben, based on Melchoir Vulpius' melody from the Hamburg Hymnal, is especially well-suited to display his mastery in depicting the words of the chorale. The so-called Ausfullungsbass (a vocal bass added to the principal bass in tutti passages) was probably necessitated by the acoustical properties of Hamburg's churches. This is the first Urtext edition of this highly successful chorale setting which is based on Georg Philipp Telemann Musical Works. The score contains a realisation of the continuo part.* First Urtext edition based on Georg Philipp Telemann Musical Works* An attractive addition to the repertoire with a view to the Telemann Year 2017* Bilingual Foreword (Ger/Eng)* Uncluttered idiomatic piano reduction.

Marc-Antoine Charpentier not only originated the Eurovision Melody, rather he also made an important contribution to French sacred music from the baroque with his oratorios, motets and cantatas. The four cantatas for the season of Christmas (CV 21.019-21.022) are now published in first editions. The Latin texts of these works for Christmas, the New Year, Epiphany, and the Purification are based on the accounts of the Gospels, which are paraphrased in the form of poetic texts. As in Charpentier's extensive Histoires sacrees, the musical structure is oratorical, with a part for the evangelist and texts spoken directly by biblical personages and groups of people (angels, Herodes, shepherds, wise men). In each work the vocal scoring includes two sopranos and a bass (those passages where a number of voices sing together can be performed either by soloists or by a choir). With this uniform scoring it would be meaningful to perform these works as a cycle, in the manner of a small Christmas oratorio. Score available separately - see item CA.2101900.

The choral cantatas are Reger's most personal and most substantial contribution to one of the principal categories of Protestant church music, and they are only major works in this field by one of the foremost composers of his time. This is true despite the fact that Reger himself does not appear to have considered the cantatas to figure among his principal compositions, as he gave them no opus numbers. In contrast to the three other chorale cantatas of Reger which exist in a definitive form, there is no record of the place or date of the first performance of O wie selig, or indeed of any performance of it during the composer's lifetime. Of Josef Rheinberger's eighteen masses, five are for unaccompanied voices, four with accompaniment by a small instrumental ensemble and nine with organ. Among the last group the leicht ausfuhrbare (easy to perform) works take a special place: Considered by their composer as purely utility music, they achieved great popularity during his lifetime and soon became part of the standard repertory of small church choirs. Score available separately - see item CA.5006200.
