French organist and composer, Marcel Dupré (1886-1971) is also remembered as a significant pedagogue. However, his prominence within the organ repertoire remains absolute with sublime works, including his Passion Symphony. Dupré studied at the Paris Conservatoire with Louis Vierne and Charles-Marie Widor, where he won prizes for piano, organ and fugue, as well as the Grand Prix de Rome. He was a famous organ virtuoso and was able to perform the entire works composed for the instrument by J. S. Bach from memory. Dupré's Op. 23, the Passion Symphony for Organ is made up of four movements depicting the life of Christ; 1) The World awaiting the Saviour, 2) Nativity, 3) Crucifixion, and 4) Resurrection. All of the movements display a high degree of virtuosic technique and musical integrity. Dupré's compositions and didactic works remain important to organists today and his Passion Symphony is no exception.

Composed by Jehan Alain, Three Pieces is a set of upper intermediate / advanced works for organ, with pedal-use. The first piece, ?Variations sur un theme de Clement Jannequin (Variations on a Clement Jannequin's Tune), should be played?in the same way as Couperin's Preludes: freshly and softly. It contains four distinctive parts: Affetuoso, Maggiore, Fuggato and Grave. The second piece is called ?Le jardin suspendu (The hanging garden) and features three different parts that can't be played separately. The last piece, Litanies, is quite religious and consists of the repetition of lamentations. Its introduction in vivo is played only by the right hand, then followed by a?Lirico ma sempre vivo part. These are followed by switches between the main tempo and some vivacissimo parts, sounding declamatory. This third piece ends really harmoniously. Jehan Alain is a French organist who became famous with his Suite for Organ. Student of Marcel Dupre and Roger Ducasse among others, he kept composing all his life. One of his most famous international pieces is Litanies.

An essential feature of attitudes prevailing in the days of Luther was the ubiquitous concern with death and dying, assailed by plague, wars and the never-ending dangers of daily life. The associated fears sometimes escalated to the grotesque, as in paintings by Hieronymus Bosch, and the 'dance of death' was a popular motif in those years. Luther's chorale of 1524 In the very midst of life / we see death all around us (the Erfurt Enchiridion) is based on the Gregorian Media vita in morte sumus that emerged in France in about 750, evoking thoughts of mortality in its outline form.

On the occasion of the quincentenary of Reformation Day in 2017, the composer Enjott Schneider thoroughly studied Martin Luther the individual and all his contradictions. The result is a brilliant, demanding organ symphony which is perfect for concerts on the subject of Reformation and Martin Luther. The composer describes the five movements of the symphony as follows:'1st movement:Wir glauben all an einen Gott with its quintuplet-like beginning is very Gregorian in style, outlining the range of Lutheran emotionalism between the Middle Ages and the modern era. The irrationality of faith ultimately has priority over any thought and evidence. At the beginning of the movement, sounds of knocking on wood remind of the nailing of the Ninety-Five Theses to the doors of churches in Wittenberg. The chorale melody sometimes hides with an almost rough medieval saltarello, referring to Luther's robustness and vitality with which he knew to carry away even common people.2nd movement:In 1530, the electoral prince of Saxony presented to Luther at Coburg Castle the golden signet ring with the Luther rose which became the symbol of his theology of grace. A white heart with black cross is fixed on a five-petalled rose. To him, white is the colour of angels and ghosts, black stands for the pain of crucification: The just shall live by faith, but by faith in the Crucified. But the fact that the rose and the heart are the dominating symbols shows how Catholic Marian piety remained an ingredient of Luther's spirituality throughout his life. In line with the dominant five-petal structure of the rose, this movement was composed, to a large extent, in accordance with the floating, lyrical rhythm in 5/8 time.3rd movement:The omnipresence of death and dying - from the plague and war to the never-ending dangers of daily life - was an essential part of the world view of that time. Fears ensued that might heighten into the grotesque, e.g. in the pictures of Hieronymus Bosch. The Danse macabre was a popular motif in those years. Luther's chorale Mitten wir im Leben sind / mit dem Tod umfangen from 1524 (Enchiridion from Erfurt) is based on the Gregorian chant Media vita in morte sumus created in France around 750 and, with its idea of transience, inspired a simplistic air.4th movement:The famous confession delivered at the Diet of Worms in 1521, I stand here and can say no more. God help me. Amen, are not Luther's words but the version later used as text for a pamphlet. However, it represents quite plainly the straightforwardness and inevitability of his mission. Musically, it was made into a perpetuum mobile, i.e. a dogged, ostinato and never-ending musical air.5th movement:The Mighty Fortress, on the other hand, is one of the great symbols of Martin Luther which, with its shining C major key, embodies the Protestant ideology and willful nature of the Reformation unlike any other song. Heinrich Heine called it the Marseille anthem of the Reformation, Friedrich Engels the Marseillaise of the Peasants' Wars. This disputability is not thought through to the end but rather interrupted: With a jubilant birdcall version of the melody, the finale shows a rather chamber-music-like side of the ideals of freedom of Christians.'.

To the composer Enjott Schneider, Golgatha, the biblical place of crucification, is a symbol of both the transient and transcendental in human life. For his composition of the same name, he chose the form of a chaconne with introduction. Full of number symbolism, the work was premiered by the solo trombonist of the Hamburg NDR Symphony Orchestra and the organist of the Trier Cathedral to whom it has been dedicated.

The Fountain Reverie features soft, rippling arpeggios with a contrasting middle section. As with the Festival Toccata, published at the same time, the brilliance of Fountain Reverie disguises the fact that one does not need to be a virtuoso to play it well and effectively, and it plays well on many different Organs.Percy Fletcher was an English composer, conductor and Orchestrator of prodigious output who made his career in the lively world of the London music theatre of the years of the late 19th and early 20th century. He was music director at many theatres, including His Majesty's Theatre for the last seventeen years of his life. He was the Orchestrator and conductorfor the big budget spectacular theatre piece Chu Chin Chow which ran for five years, a record that remained unbroken for forty years. In addition to his myriad works of light music, Fletcher also wrote a serious church cantata, The Passion of Christ, as well as the delightful children's work, The Walrus and the Carpenter.

This edition is the result of Harald Vogel's many years of practice as an organist and musicologist. The music text is based on a reevaluation of 17th- and 18th-century manuscripts containing the free organ and keyboard works by Buxtehude. They originated during a transitional phase between the traditional letter tablature and the staff notation still in use today. Since many works have survived only in transcriptions for staff notation, the editor was confronted with a high error rate, which he carefully analyzes in the Einzelanmerkungen. During the preparation of the edition, the editor always kept sight of the performance practice, but still, the image of the sources is never distorted (e. g. by superfluous rests, beaming not conforming to the sources and the unhistorical adjustment of time signatures) and stays very close to the compositional notation, the letter tablature. The flexible use of three staves and the differentiated distribution of the voices on the staves allow for an approximation in reading conventions of historical notation with its resulting information about hand division. Grouping the free organ repertoire into works with obbligato pedal and works for manuals, this edition is organized in two volumes. The first subvolume (I/1, EB 9304) contains the Preface and the Preludes, whereas the second subvolume (I/2, EB 9305) contains Toccatas, Ostinato works, alternative versions and a comprehensive Critical Commentary (in German only). Volume II (EB 9306) contains Buxtehude's free organ and keyboard works (manualiter) with the corresponding texts (Preface and Critical Commentary).Until 1971, Harald Vogel worked on a dissertation (with Georg von Dadelsen, Hamburg) on Die Fuge um Bach. Besides the description of the inclusion of triple measures into the C notation and the irregularities of the voice mutation in the polyphonic structures, this also included a discussion about the justification of the inner textual criticism. With the inner textual criticism, deviations in parallel passages are unified. The North German fugue style, reaching a peak in Buxtehude's work, is characterized by a constant diversity of details in subject and polyphonic progressions. One of the indicators of the fantastic style is the dissolution of the polyphonic structures at the ends of the fugues, evident in Buxtehude's work.In this edition, a musical text is presented that avoids the uniformity of detail not conforming to the sources. However, there are many examples of transcription and cursory errors, which are analyzed in a methodical systematic manner. About the editor: As an organist, professor, organ expert, and scholar, Harald Vogel has rendered outstanding services to the interpretation of early music and especially to historical performance practice concerning the organ for decades. He has received numerous awards, including an ECHO Klassik as Instrumentalist of the Year (2012), honorary doctorates from Lulea University of Technology (Sweden, 2008) and Oberlin College (USA, 2014), as well as the Buxtehude Prize of the City of Lubeck (2018). Harald Vogel is the author and editor of numerous scholarly publications and editions. Through his lifelong performance practice, he can look back on an extensive discography, including the complete recording of Buxtehude's organ works, which he recorded in various locations with historical organ instruments of the North German organ building tradition in Scandinavia, North Germany and the Netherlands.pure source edition (no mixture of different transmissions); comprehensive commentary (Vol. I/2 & II) (with texts about the sources, chronology, use of keys, liturgic placement as well as detailed critical remarks, incl. music examples (in German only)); good page turnsflexible division of voices (on 2 or 3 systems, good legibility); contains facsimiles. One of the first things that comes to one's mind when reading the title of Organ Symphony No. 9 'Pathetique' by Enjott Schneider is another work with this epithet: Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6. And that is no coincidence: The composer regards his organ work as an homage to this 'elder sister'. While Tchaikovsky, in a secret programme, made out his own life to be a struggle and long ordeal to the point of his suspected suicide, Enjott Schneider presents those hours as the ultimate tale of woe in which Jesus had well and truly become human, fatefully bearing the pain and misery of all people. 'Gethsemane', 'Geiselung: Ecce homo', 'Golgatha' and 'Grablegung': Maria Magdalena' are the names of the stages and movements. The Greek word 'pathos' means 'strong emotion, feeling, passion or suffering' - in Schneider's Organ Symphony No. 9, this comes true, musically, in his inner conflict, struggle, wrestling with his fate, cruelty of the crucifixion and deathly silence.

The Orgelbüchlein Project is a collective composition project aiming to complete Bach's unfinished manuscript known as 'Orgelbüchlein'. In the 'Little Organ Book', Bach laid out a complete hymnal of short organ chorale preludes, 164 in all, but only completed 46 of them. Why the remaining 118 were left as blank pages, with only a title at the head, remains a mystery, but they inspried organists William Whitehead to found the Orgelbüchlein Project, in which contemporary composers are invited to contribute a piece to completing the collection. The resulting collection, to be published in six volumes, represents a cross-section of the most interesting composers at work today across Europe.More information about the project is available at www.orgelbuechlein.comList of Composers

Overture to Uncle Vanya (2022) is an overture to an imaginary opera based on the play of the same name (publ. 1898) by the Russian playwright Anton Chekhov (1860-1904). The music is not directly programmatic but rather, in the typical manner of an overture, ruminates in a compact form on moods, themes, scenes, and characters from the play itself. Actual opera overtures have historically had their own life as independent concert pieces, and thus the attempt here is to present an atmospheric picture, even without an opera or play following it.Organ Duration: 9' Composed: 2022 Published by: Zimbel Press.

The composer and organist Paul Siefert, baptized in Gdansk on 28 June 1586 and died there on 6 May 1666, belongs to the 'North German organ school'. Thanks to a grant of the town council of Gdansk, Siefert spent the years from 1607 until probably late 1610 studying in Amsterdam where he got important ideas and suggestions as a pupil of Sweelinck. After his return he became deputy organist in Gdansk. From 1611 to 1616 he worked as an organist first at the church in the old town of Konigsberg, then at the Warsaw court orchestra. On 23 September 1623 he was appointed organist at the Marienkirche of Gdansk in succession to Michael Weyda where he worked until the end of his life. This edition of his organ works contains 13 fantasias, two chorale preludes and a motet as well as a detailed description of the work in the preface and in the critical report.

French organist and composer Louis Vierne (1870-1937) was a student of César Franck and Charles-Marie Widor and worked as the organist for Notre-Dame de Paris from 1900 until his death, which took place on the organ bench at a recital. He composed many works for organ, among them six organ symphonies and a Messe solennelle for chorus and two organs. His six symphonies express the highs and lows of his personal life, and all are written in minor keys. Vierne's Organ Symphony No. 2, Op. 20, is in E minor. Movements: I. Allegro; II. Choral; III. Scherzo; IV. Cantabile; V. Final.

Jan Rybarskis Fantasia for Organ is a work of a great emotional impact. Its romantic dramaturgy leads the listener into the state of deep reflections. The work is monumental; its structure resembles a one-part sonata with a fugue in the middle fragment. The arrangement requires organs with minimum 16-18 voices in two manuals. Despite fast passages and at times complicated harmony that require a lot of practice, the work is played with comfort. The author, as an organist-practitioner, uses difficult technical elements that he controls in a perfect manner. The proportion of the traditional and modern harmonics is ideal, which means it perfectly corresponds to the dramaturgy of the work. The main formative element is the rhythm that - as the author claims himself - inspires, opens both the performer and the listener to the experience. The structure of the Fantasia brings connotations to the course of a human life, with a film story that apparently is different for everyone, but conveys one truth common to all people: in order to overcome difficulties, you need to trust God.

Carl Friedrich Christian Fasch's Mass in 16 parts is remarkable for more than its unusual scoring. Inspired by the Italian church music style of Orazio Benevoli, it was composed in 1783 for the Berliner Sing-Akademie, and revised by Fasch several times throughout his life in order to adapt the score to the vocal capabilities of his ensemble. The composer destroyed all earlier compositions, which probably contributed to the legendary fame which this mass has enjoyed since the 19th century. The mass was, however, only published in 1839 - around four decades after Fasch's death. The present edition is based on the version contained in the first printed edition. In addition to modern music notation, extensive performance materials (two choral scores, separate organ part) facilitate the rehearsal of this challenging work. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2708300.
