Symphony for Organ (2013) is cast as a dramatic progression from darkness into light. The first movement, Masque, is extremely violent and bleak. The title is used with a touch of irony--for this is not a masque of courtly diversion, but rather a furious struggle against the darkness, played out in a series of dramatic episodes following a Tudor-era formal design. The ending builds to a dramatic peak, and leaves us in shell-shocked silence. The second movement, Sarabande, begins quietly and mournfully, and gradually gains in fervency. A faster middle section is a spinning dance before the return of the opening music. In the coda, the light gradually approaches. The third movement, Chorale, evokes the colors of a new dawn. The music of the first movement's struggle gradually becomes washed in the blaze of morning. Instrumentation: Organ Duration: 21' Composed: 2013 Published by: Zimbel Press.

This work's four movements were inspired by the four Ariel poems of T.S. Eliot. The poems are entitled Journey of the Magi, A Song for Simeon, Animula, and Marina. Colorful organ registrations, late twentieth-century musical language and references to other organ works and chant melodies are employed in this musical representation of Eliot's poetry. The poems mark, in part, Eliot's conversion experience to orthodox Christianity. The spiritual theme of T.S. Eliot Impressions is that of a journey from darkness to light and from despair to hope. A tour-de-force concert calibre work of some twenty minutes in length. Detailed notes by the composer are included in the publication and are critical to the understanding and appreciation of this extended work.

William Blake was a highly versatile universal genius - poet, painter, copper engraver and philosopher - who in the face of the rationally based Enlightenment put the worship of ecstasy, energy, intuition and imagination above all reason. He was inspired by a vision of the prophet Ezekiel as a child and went on to construct a creative cosmos consisting of myths, opposing forces and uninhibited psychic painting. Misunderstood by his contemporaries, he only began to be rediscovered at the beginning of the twentieth century, for example by W. B. Yeats, and subsequently also during the 1960s by various figures including the 'beat poets' associated with Allen Ginsberg, filmmakers and numerous modern poets. Enjott Schneider.

Organ Symphony No. 2 (2017) was written for and is dedicated to German organist Philip Hartmann. In all of my works that employ larger-scale forms (not just organ compositions), I am continually looking for different ways of providing the form and structure. My first organ symphony (2013) comprised three larger movements that charted a progression from dark to light. By contrast, this second organ symphony comprises 12 shorter movements that together build a larger structure out of varied emotional states. Although the movements are different in character, there are connections of harmony and motive across them. One goal behind this work is that it be suitable for effective performance on almost any organ, small or large. Most organ symphonies require a large instrument. By contrast, this piece can be played effectively on even a small organ with a limited number of stops (even a one manual organ with an octave pedal board). It can also be very effective on a large symphonic organ with many different colors and a huge tutti. Registration is left to the performer's discretion, and the organist is strongly encouraged to use the full extent of whatever resources are available. A key work in Reger's organ production from the time of its first publication in 1902 up to today, the famous F-minor Passacaglia from Op. 63 has cast its spell on generations of organ lovers. The dark bass strides quietly through the depths, persistently and secretly like time itself; a ghostly breath murmurs about the heights and rustles through light leaves; and from within emerges a voice which rises and falls in a seemingly aimless manner, and which speaks more than it sings... (Gustav-Robert Tornow on the 8th variation of the Passacaglia in his 1907 introduction to the work).

The term chiaroscuro (light-dark), which originates in painting, can be applied to Martin Christoph Redel's uvre as a whole, with its clearly defined style full of contrast, its linearity, spatiality and richness of form. In his almost 10-minute organ piece of this title, models from the Renaissance or early modernism are reflected with their free formal design. The work is available as a recording by the organist Friedhelm Flamme, who also gave the world premiere, on the portrait CD released in 2022 on the Genuin Classics label (GEN 22760) on the occasion of the composer's 75th birthday.
