Man that is born of woman hath but a short time to live is one of the central biblical texts dealing with the transitoriness of human existence. Leopold Hofmann, Kapellmeister at St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna from 1772 to 1793, where W. A. Mozart was his church music assistant, also set this strongly expressive text. Hofmann's setting, in C minor, offers an austere harmony, characterized by suspensions in a homophonic, through-composed four-part vocal setting (soloists or SATB choir), reinforced only by two trombones and organ continuo. Four concise instrumental transitional passages between the individual verses relieve the pathos laden Viennese church style of this composition. With its tragic air, in some passages it closely resembles Mozart's Requiem K. 626. For this first edition, the two trombone parts are available both in the original clef and in alto clef. The figured bass has been realized so that the piece can also be performed without trombones, with only organ accompaniment. For a performance this piece could easily be combined with the Salve Regina by Pietro Cassati (Carus 27.703) from the Vienna series. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2770500.

The American musical patrons Mildred and Robert Wood Bliss were considering which distinguished composer to commission to create a work in celebration of their 30th wedding anniversary in 1938. The couple had made the acquaintance of Igor Stravinsky in April the preceding year at the premiere of his ballet Jeu de Cartes in New York and had subsequently invited the composer to their country home 'Dumbarton Oaks' in Washington D.C. to talk about a new composition. Stravinsky only just managed to complete the work in time for the anniversary celebrations: its date of completion was also the date of its first performance. For his classically styled three-movement work, he selected the title Concerto in E flat, adding the subtitle Dumbarton Oaks as a dedication. The structure of the work references the concerto grosso: it features a soloist ensemble which unites in the tutti sequences but also plays in concertino groups during the solo episodes. Broken chordal structures characterise the central movement whereas the outer movements are distinguished through their use of fugato. Dumbarton Oaks went on to become one of Stravinskys mostsuccessful works, performed widely and delighting Mildred Bliss so much that she immediately issued another commission, for the Symphony in C. Its composer's very public commitment to American cultural life helped pave the way for Stravinskys emigration to the USA in 1945. As early as 1952 Leif Thybo created an arrangement for organ which Stravinsky probably did not know at the time of his life.

The Sonata in B minor undoubtedly is the most important piano composition by Franz Liszt and a pinnacle of piano literature. The creation of the work around 1850 coincides with the period in which Liszt concentrated on the organ and its possibilities of sound and expression as well as on the music by Johann Sebastian Bach. Liszt composed several works for organ himself and arranged both some of his own works and works by other composers for this versatile instrument. While working on the arrangement, Andreas Rothkopf acted on the maxim to stay close to the original work with its finely nuanced texture and find his own tonal language appropriate for the organ on the basis of Liszt. For a better understanding of the arrangement, the interpreter may want to have a profound knowledge of the original piano text.

The dance is introduced in 6/8 against 2/4 time, before the exposition of a festive theme that alternates bouncing light passages with percussive chords. A more lyrical central episode precedes the recapitulation. The Basque fandango ends always with another dance step: 'Arin Arin' in 2/4, which is here characterized by scales, continuing the piece's joyful and vivacious character.
