New music on old instruments and new organ literature in dialogue with historical Iberian works. The present edition contains a collection of works, composed for an authentically rebuilt historical Spanish organ and covering a wide range of styles, which adds new sounds to the purely Baroque repertoire. With works by Jose Blasco de Nebra, Francisco Correa de Arauxo, Antonio de Cabezon, Pedro de Araujo, Antonio de Cabezon and new compositions by Guy Bovet, Michael Kapsner, Pavel Klimashevsky, Zsigmond Szathmary and Alfred Muller-Kranich. The new Spanish organ of the Hochschule fur Musik Mainz as an authentically rebuilt historical instrument from the workshop of the organ builder Joaquin Lois from Tordesillas in Castile shall both adequately reproduce early music and be a source of inspiration for contemporary music. For this reason, the Hochschule fur Musik Mainz commissioned five composers to write modern compositions according to the motto 'Early music in dialogue with New Music' which are a valuable addition to the repertoire of historical instruments of the 'Siglo de Oro'. Certain specifications had to be taken into account: e. g. a limited pitch range, half stops for treble and bass registers, the short octave as well as a mean-tone temperament. In addition, each composition is based on a work of the Iberian organ literature; sometimes, the work found its way into the new composition, sometimes, it only served as an inspiration. The pieces can also be played on a modern organ, although there is a special charm in playing and hearing them played on an appropriate historical instrument. Encompassing a broad range of styles, the resulting collection adds new sounds to the purely Baroque repertoire.

According to Muhly, this composition is an attempt to set the text of the Latin Mass using a completely different harmonic structure from his previous works. The rhythms and melodies can be seen as circular, rather than linear, becoming evident from both the Organ parts and the choir's initial phrases. As the piece progresses, the dynamic tempo enhances the interplay of all parts, all the while hinting at Stravinskian inspirations.

Radegund Variations (2017) was written for and is dedicated to Hartmut Siebmanns, cantor and organist in Possneck, in the Thuringia region of Germany. This work was inspired by the life of Radegund (ca. 520-587), who was a Thuringian princess (and later Frankish queen) most famous for founding the Abbey of the Holy Cross in Poitiers, France. The piece begins with an original theme: its contemporary view of ancient modality represents looking back from the present time into Radegund's era. The theme is followed by six contrasting variations, inspiration for which are drawn from events in Radegund's life: her marriage and joining the Frankish court (1st variation); her flight from the court (after the murder of her brother) to seek protection from the church (2nd variation); her devotion to the needy (3rd variation); her friendship with the poet Venantius Fortunatus and her commissioning of his sacred poem Vexilla Regis (4th variation); her gifts of healing (5th variation); and the building of the abbey (6th variation). The story of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor is of a rising star composer, one with a significant gift for melody and a simple lyricism, who embraced the previously unexplored song and dance forms from his father’s native west Africa and incorporated them into his own very European art music. Coleridge-Taylor began playing the violin at age five and by age fifteen wasadmitted to London’s Royal College of Music, where he studied both violin and composition and composed his first works. The simply-titled Melody is taken from Three Short Pieces for Organ - a set of pieces originally published in Novello’s Album for the Organ, No. 3 (1898). While certainly typical of the late 19th century, many of Coleridge-Taylor's creations display inspiration by African musical elements much like spirituals inspired Dvořák’s “New World†Symphony.

A heroic new organ solo by Samuel Adler, this substantial work was written for the dedication of the St. Cecilia organ at the Church of the Transfiguration in Orleans, MA. Adler has used the vivid fresco images of shofars in the church as inspiration for this work, which marks the opening of Rosh Hashana. The variety of trumpets and tubas on this organ also play a substantial part in the variety of sounds. An exciting fanfare and Allegro is followed by a beautiful chant-like section as contrast. A brilliant toccata on the opening material follows, bringing the work to a thunderous conclusion. This is a thrilling concert piece for a festive occasion.

Though the work bearing this title is a portrait of childhood, it is a childhood quite different from the purely gameplaying and dreamlike childhood that is customarily represented. The childhood described here is carrying the seed, in all its purity, of all positive and negative qualities to be found the fully-grown men: a childhood both angelic and diabolical, and indeed very close to Henry James' The Turn of the Screw which was the direct inspiration for this monodrama. Its growth follows the innumerable sudden changes, turns and contrasts of the unsophisticated spirit. There is hardly any development at all, as each idea gives birth to the next or rejects the previons one, being object to every impulse, every tempest, every flux, every fear and delight. After a dreamlike introduction, in which two simple melodies stand out, comes a sudden awakening, Allegro, stamped all over with lavish and forever regenerating dynamism. A sudden halt leads a kind of outburst from the most simple folklore is singing, in regular, repeated notes. Again the question mark leads us to another melody, Tranquillo, of a sweet tempo, but brilliantly decorated with counter-point, its cursive traits leading this time to a kind of roguish march (Vigoroso).Yet soon there emerges a melancholic chant, Largo, in the Cromorne's timbre, and then, in the highest register of the Trumpet there reappears like a metamorphosed memory, the theme of the second movement. Passing other episodes, we come to Tempo giusto, insistent and glorious, interrupted by other passionate figures, cut off by unsettling silent moments and taken up again in always accelerating volleys.
