The fact that Hermann Schroeder ranks among the most important composers of Catholic church music in the 20th century shows especially in the simple church music form of the choral setting, e. g. in his setting of the sacred song Unuberwindlich starker Held, Sankt Michael. With his own typical archaic tonal language, Schroeder creates an a cappella choral setting (SATB) in which the dignity and the admiration of the heroic deeds of the Archangel Michael find their musical expression in a very compact form. The underlying melody (GL 924) dates from 1623. The author of the text of the Song of Michael is the German hymn writer Friedrich Spee. A very charming choral setting that can be easily mastered by any church choir; its five verses have to be sung alternately by the choir and the congregation. Apart from the a cappella choral setting, the practical congregational edition also contains a chorale prelude and the organ chorale which can, of course, be used as accompaniment for the congregation, but also for the choral setting.

Funeral music plays an important role in music history for the articulation of grief and sorrow is an essential task of music. The important German organ composer Harald Genzmer (born in 1909) wrote his 'Musik der Trauer' in 2001, deeply affected by the death of his wife. The music is full of emotion and sentiment, expressing grief, sorrow, desperation, but also fierce rebellion against the inescapability of fate. At the end, the motif 'Christ ist erstanden' can be heard as an expression of Christian hope.

Saint-Saëns' Instrumentalkompositionen wurden bereits zu seinen Lebzeiten in ungewöhnlicher Anzahl von renommierten Organisten für die Orgel bearbeitet. Auch das Weihnachtsoratorium bot dankbaren Anlass, einzelne seiner Sätze für die Orgel zu bearbeiten. So erschienen bereits um 1880 bei Durand (Paris) zwei Sätze (Nr. 7 und 10) in Orgelbearbeitungen, erstellt einerseits von Eugène Gigout (1844-1925), Titularorganist von St. Augustin (Paris), andererseits von Joseph Permann (1842-1920), Organist von Saint-Michel des Lions (Limoges). Während Permann das Trio für drei Gesangstimmen in ein Prière überführte, nahm sich Gigout die Freiheit des Bearbeiters, den Finalsatz zu einer größeren Improvisation über den Schlusschor zu erweitern. Diesen beiden Sätzen hat sich der Herausgeber erlaubt, ergänzend die Bearbeitung des einleitenden Prélude im Stile J.S. Bachs voranzustellen. (Otto Depenheuer).

The B.A.C.H. motif has been known and used for centuries, but enjoyed a great revival in the late 19th century as composers paid homage to the composer J.S. Bach. It derives from the German nomenclature, and is expressed in standard notation as Bb-A-C-B.
The Fantasia And Fugue On B.A.C.H. is one of the most famous Organ works of Franz Liszt (1811-1886). The piece was intended for the inauguration of the famous Ladegast Organ at Merseburg Cathedral, but sadly, it wasn't finished in time. Liszt then revised the work in 1870 and produced the version that survives today. A well-loved piece, no organist's library iscomplete without it.
