Fenestral Nocturnes (2020) was commissioned by organist Philip Hartmann to mark the 50th anniversary of the completion of the stained glass windows in the Pauluskirche in Ulm, Germany. The 16 dramatic windows were created by the German artist Klaus Arnold (1928-2009). The three movements take inspiration from several of the windows and Arnold's distinctive postmodern artistic style for portraying the Biblical ideas. Written as a nocturne, Evening Rest is a single-movement work for Organ in lyric style with a charming melody. Because of the range of the instrument for which it was composed, Hollins includes alternate voicing for Organs without carillon, parts for which are included throughout the work.English Organist and composer Alfred Hollins was active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Blind from birth, Hollins was fortunate enough to attend the innovative Royal Normal College for the Blind outside London, whose music-intensive curriculum suited his musical gifts.
