Commissioned by an organist for the one-year anniversary of the death of a loved one, these two pieces are based on contrasting psalm verses: The Lord is near to the broken-hearted (Ps.34:18) and I will praise the Lord all my days, making music while I live (Ps. 146.2). Composer Alan Hommerding united these pieces with a common theme, and transforms it as the mourner's spirit is transformed by faith.

Man that is born of woman hath but a short time to live is one of the central biblical texts dealing with the transitoriness of human existence. Leopold Hofmann, Kapellmeister at St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna from 1772 to 1793, where W. A. Mozart was his church music assistant, also set this strongly expressive text. Hofmann's setting, in C minor, offers an austere harmony, characterized by suspensions in a homophonic, through-composed four-part vocal setting (soloists or SATB choir), reinforced only by two trombones and organ continuo. Four concise instrumental transitional passages between the individual verses relieve the pathos laden Viennese church style of this composition. With its tragic air, in some passages it closely resembles Mozart's Requiem K. 626. For this first edition, the two trombone parts are available both in the original clef and in alto clef. The figured bass has been realized so that the piece can also be performed without trombones, with only organ accompaniment. For a performance this piece could easily be combined with the Salve Regina by Pietro Cassati (Carus 27.703) from the Vienna series. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2770500.

This volume includes organ works based on chorales surviving in various sources. Some of these works were not previously included in theNew Bach Editioneither for reasons of doubtful authenticity or because they were unknown until now. Two pieces from this repertoire - the two arrangements ofWie schon leuchtet der MorgensternBWV 739 and 764 - stem from one of Bach's autograph manuscripts. Flor Peeters, born in Belgium in 1903, is one of the most important organists and organ composers of the 20th century. After completing his studies at the famous Lemmens Institute in Mechelen, he worked there as a teacher of organ and improvisation before becoming professor at and director of the Royal Flemish Conservatoire of Antwerp. Until his death in 1986, Peeters gave concerts all around the world, held numerous master classes and received several awards and prizes for his achievements as a composer, organist and teacher. In his successful three-volume educational work 'Ars Organi', Peeters combines theoretical knowledge and practical exercises on all aspects of organ playing, starting with basic information on the instrument, manual and pedal exercises, and two-part manual and pedal playing. While Vol. 2 contains exercises on three-part playing, Vol. 3 contains exercises on four and five-part playing as well as studies on demanding trio playing. Each learning stage is accompanied by pedal exercises and tips on articulation, touch, interpretation, registration and organ specifications - a valuable compendium for every organist.

As well as 20 organ sonatas and seven collections of stand-alone organ pieces with opus numbers, Rheinberger composed a whole range of smaller works for organ methods or organ collections for his favorite instrument, mainly at the request of colleagues and friends. The posthumously compiled collection of ten smaller organ pieces WoO 25 brings together a series of interesting pieces from the years 1854 to 1896. It includes one of just two chorale settings by Rheinberger, the prelude on “Wenn ich einmal soll scheidenâ€. With short trios, preludes and fugues in different keys, the collection is particularly suitable for use in worship, but also for teaching. This beautifully presented edition from Novello offers a full Mass setting alongside a Motet, both for large mixed chorus, by Tomas Luis De Victoria. Regarded by many as one of the greatest composers of Spanish renaissance polyphony, this Mass setting is rich in his characteristic tonalities and the textures of the sacred choral tradition. Alongside this is the original Motet upon which the Mass setting is based. Both are transcribed and edited by Andrew Parker. The pairing of the two works offers an exciting and fascinating performance opportunity, with the devout grandeur of the Mass set against the modesty of the original Motet. Missa Dum Complerentur for SAATTB voices. Motet: Dum Complerentur Dies Pentecostes for SSATB voices.

A major addition to the repertoire of transcriptions for organ, the whole suite or any one of the movements will delight performers and audiences alike. Vaughan Williams's original score for military band of 1923 (orchestrated by Gordon Jacob the following year) was a milestone in the introduction of English folk song to the classical repertory which both he and his friend Holst championed. Over its three contrasting movements (two marches separated by an intermezzo) no fewer than nine folk songs are presented, in both lively and emotive style. Greg Morris, organist at London's Temple Church, has deftly arranged the suite, providing generic registration suggestions for a romantic instrument, but in the hands of imaginative players the score will readily transfer to organs of most styles and eras.

The Blue Rose Variations is one of several works in which the composer has drawn on ragtime and blues. The organ work is based on two transformations of the popular piano piece To A Wild Rose (Woodland Sketches, Op.51 No.1) by the American composer, Edward MacDowell (1860-1908). During the course of the Variations, To A Wild Rose appears as a blues and also as a classical rag, often as both together. The sections are Theme: a quiet blues; Variation I: a pedal solo in varied metres based on the blues in fast tempo; Variation II: the first appearance of the rag as a background to the blues as a 2' pedal solo; Variation III: a version of Variation I now involving manuals too; Variation IV: another blues solo against the rag; Variation V: another version of Variation I with the pedal solo almost entirely transferred to the manuals; Variation VI: a final confrontation between the blues and the rag, now much decorated. First performed in New York in April 1986. Duration c.15 mins.
