As well as 20 organ sonatas and seven collections of stand-alone organ pieces with opus numbers, Rheinberger composed a whole range of smaller works for organ methods or organ collections for his favorite instrument, mainly at the request of colleagues and friends. They are ideally suited for mass and organ lessons. This organ volume brings together twelve compositions Rheinberger wrote for different occasions and at various points during his career. Included in the collection are seven short pieces in different keys that date from the early 1860s. Rheinberger wrote these at the request of his teacher Herzog and others for several organ collections of “easy, performable†pieces – and they are rewarding pieces for liturgical use. The works without opus numbers (WoO 10, 37, 56, 70) can no longer be regarded as early works. The Fugue in F minor WoO 10 of 1867, with its tendency to translate counterpoint into expressive chordal writing, already displays many characteristics of the late Rheinberger, the Canzonetta WoO 77 is a late work from autumn 1899, whereas the Romanze WoO 70 is a second version of no. 1 of the Miscellaneen op. 174 in the easier to play key of C major.Separate edition from Supplementary Volume 3 of the Rheinberger Complete Edition.

(Christoph Dohr).

Kennebunkport Suite (2016) was written for and is dedicated to Joyce Painter Rice, First Congregational Church, Kennebunkport, Maine, and the church's 1854 E. & G. G. Hook pipe organ (Opus 177). First Congregational Church is a congregation that particularly enjoys singing the classic hymns, and this organ suite thus consists of preludes on three well-known old American hymns: Foundation (How Firm a Foundation), Bethany (Nearer, My God, To Thee), and Land of Rest (Jerusalem, My Happy Home.) (Although conceived originally for a small one-manual pipe organ with divided stops and pedals, the work can be played effectively on any organ.) It includes one of just two chorale settings by Rheinberger, the prelude on “Wenn ich einmal soll scheidenâ€. With short trios, preludes and fugues in different keys, the collection is particularly suitable for use in worship, but also for teaching. As well as 20 organ sonatas and seven collections of stand-alone organ pieces with opus numbers, Rheinberger composed a whole range of smaller works for organ methods or organ collections for his favorite instrument, mainly at the request of colleagues and friends. The Prelude in G major by Nikolaus Bruhns arranged by Rheinberger in 1882 specifically “for concert performance†shows Rheinberger as an editor skilled at “recreating†older works. He added individual voices or chords to the original composition, and occasionally restructured the part-writing – an interesting version for performing on a late 19th-century organ.Separate edition from Supplementary Volume 3 of the Rheinberger Complete Edition.

He drew largely on older pieces for this, but also composed three new pieces. What resulted is a delightful group of little gems for worship or organ teaching, including a short character piece, “Consolationâ€.Separate edition from Supplementary Volume 3 of the Rheinberger Complete Edition

The fourth volume of the section of the Reger Edition devoted to his organ works comprises, in chronological order, the chorale preludes composed between October 1893 and November 1914 in Wiesbaden, Weiden, Munich, Leipzig, and Meiningen. The composition of chorale preludes accompanied Reger throughout his entire career, even though they were composed primarily in the years from 1900 to 1902 and 1914 (Opus 135a). As almost no other composer at the turn of the century, he dedicated himself to the chorale prelude, composing around 100 works in this genre. Since January 2008, the first scholarly, critical edition of the works of Max Reger (RWA) is being produced at the Max-Reger-Institute, Karlsruhe. Its design as a hybrid edition breaks new ground in the methods of editorial practice. It comprises three areas of Reger's compositional output: Organ works, Lieder and choruses and, for the first time, Max Reger's arrangements of works by other composers. To begin the series, the first seven volumes have been published and contain the organ works, which have been eagerly awaited by many.

The overall oeuvre of Johanna Senfter only includes three free organ works: 'Fantasie und Fuge' Op. 30a (in: Female Composers, ED 9741), the present variations 'Morgenglanz der Ewigkeit' Op. 66 and an organ piece in D minor without opus number. Together with the three cycles of chorale preludes Op. 30b, Op. 70 (Schott ED 9603) and Op. 73, the instrument of the organ occupies a rather small part in her oeuvre. That puts the obvious point of view, namely to see the composer of such a 'choral fantasia' mainly as a student of Reger, into perspective. It is, on the contrary, worth to get to know this major work as a facet of the long life of an artist whose major works still wait to be rediscovered.

The seven chorale fantasias by Max Reger are among the most important of organ repertoire ? masterpieces blending chorale melody and programmatic music based on the text of the chorales.
Published on the occasion of the composer's 150th birthday, this fundamentally revised Urtext edition, in two volumes, is edited by the internationally renowned organist and Leipzig professor of organ Martin Schmeding.
As one of the most influential Reger interpreters, Schmeding not only includes the latest research, but also addresses the need for a contemporary interpretation of the chorale fantasias on modern organs. The edition includes all the original dynamic and agogic indications (including continuation lines to cresc., etc., which are missing in many modern editions), as well as all the original registration and manual indications.
Martin Schmeding's new edition provides for the first time an original musical text that combines the requirements of a modern Urtext edition with the demands of a practical edition.
