The Orgelbüchlein Project is a collective composition project aiming to complete Bach's unfinished manuscript known as 'Orgelbüchlein'. In the 'Little Organ Book', Bach laid out a complete hymnal of short organ chorale preludes, 164 in all, but only completed 46 of them. Why the remaining 118 were left as blank pages, with only a title at the head, remains a mystery, but they inspried organists William Whitehead to found the Orgelbüchlein Project, in which contemporary composers are invited to contribute a piece to completing the collection. The resulting collection, to be published in six volumes, represents a cross-section of the most interesting composers at work today across Europe.More information about the project is available at www.orgelbuechlein.comList of Composers

The Blue Rose Variations is one of several works in which the composer has drawn on ragtime and blues. The organ work is based on two transformations of the popular piano piece To A Wild Rose (Woodland Sketches, Op.51 No.1) by the American composer, Edward MacDowell (1860-1908). During the course of the Variations, To A Wild Rose appears as a blues and also as a classical rag, often as both together. The sections are Theme: a quiet blues; Variation I: a pedal solo in varied metres based on the blues in fast tempo; Variation II: the first appearance of the rag as a background to the blues as a 2' pedal solo; Variation III: a version of Variation I now involving manuals too; Variation IV: another blues solo against the rag; Variation V: another version of Variation I with the pedal solo almost entirely transferred to the manuals; Variation VI: a final confrontation between the blues and the rag, now much decorated. First performed in New York in April 1986. Duration c.15 mins.

These are all arrangements of sixteenth-century Scottish church music, beginning with Psalm 124 by David Peebles, which gains an athletic counterpoint of Davies's own. Then comes John Fethy's O God Abufe played straight, and finally an anonymous motet, All Sons of Adam, again infiltrated by a modern voice.

This work is based on the composer's three-part motet John written in 1963 to a poem of Thomas Blackburn. The ten sections (the last a repeat of the first) are variations on themes and rhythms of the choral piece.

Three Autumn Sketches after a Watercolor by Maria Willscher (2017) are dedicated to Hans-Peter Bahr. The music is inspired by a watercolor painting by Maria (Neumann) Willscher (1922-1998) entitled Herbststimmung. The three movements explore moods and colors of autumn as reflected in the painting. In the first movement, Herbststimmung (Autumn Mood), a musical line falls under gentle undulation. A central section is a wistful chorale. The second movement, Herbstfarben (Autumn Colors), reflects on the subtle variety and gradations of autumn colors with constantly shifting armonic colors. The final movement, Sonnenuntergang (Sunset), is inspired by the serenely beautiful colors of an autumn sunset, imagining the sun's departing rays illuminating the autumn landscape. Instrumentation: Organ Duration: 16' Composed: 2017 Published by: Zimbel Press.
